I believe in holding people responsible for their actions and these women deserve stiff sentences. But when I hear about a girl who was 15 when her boyfriend killed someone (whatever her role in aiding and abetting) getting the exact same life sentence as, say, Dahmer or the BTK killer, I have to question whether justice is being done.
its interesting that if the killer is an attractive female, much more compassion and understanding is shown to her, and more focus on the thought that something tragic must have drove her to her actions. Whereas if the killer is a fat, scruffy man who looks like a predator, people are rooting for his death. It goes to show what a deep effect vanity can have, maybe without realizing. When is one considered an adult? At what age? When does someone truly understand their actions? There are always many things to consider. If a court can take such a long time to decide if one is guilty or innocent; then perhaps more time should be considered in deciding one's fate. Most facilities should not even house an animal much less a human; yet one who commits horrible acts would not be some one considered a desired next door neighbor.

Would you rather see those boys locked up for life or for several years, send them to rehabilitation, and then do community service such as speaking to groups about hate crimes.

In England we have the "whole life tariff" though this seems to rarely be given.'Life' usually is around 15 years minimum,or an indefinite period,until the prisoner is deemed safe to re-enter society.If someone is released on a 'life licence' then they are monitored regularly,for life.Though with government cut-backs,etc,this is not without it's problems.Surely in the case of young teens who murder each case should be looked at individually when determining sentencing!

@ultradumbass as far as I can imagine it, Many episodes of Forensic Files that describe a spouse's murder always have the culprit serve life or death penalty. Besides, I think 15 years in prison should be enough for a guy murdering his wife out of a panic reflex regarding money, or sexual affairs; and I think 30 years in prison is enough for life insurance policy exploitation (which is also a common case described).

@Kittyslasher69 in european countries jails rarely are the same as north american ones. in italy for instance they make it those that served from 5-12 years, generally 8 years can apply for part time release. if they are granted they can spend up to 45 days of the year at home. in germany those that do extra chores get extra rewards such as more tv or computer time. the reasons europeans do it is because they know giving prisoners some dignity results in less reoffending.
@Kittyslasher69 also about 75% of prisoners already had parents in prison. generally after their late 20's and early 30's people become less likely to offend. and about 90% of prisoners probably in my view probably are no longer a threat after 5-25 years depending on who the individual is. if so many prisoners had relatives, that means if prisoners who had kids for instance who were no longer deemed dangerous were freed, it means it is less likely that future generations would offend as well.

Children are impressionable and will do terrible things if they are taught and believe it is ok to do so. Several years in prison can really change someone. Would you rather see those boys locked up for life or for several years, send them to rehabilitation, and then do community service such as speaking to groups about hate crimes.

Life in prison believing that you were morally correct in raping a retarded teen is easier than serving a few years, being forced to learn the effects of what you did (such as talking with the child's family), and then speaking in front of others about your crime. I think if the children sentenced to life without parole learned what they did they would feel guilty for the rest of their lives. To me personally that would be the worst punishment.

In England we have the "whole life tariff" though this seems to rarely be given.'Life' usually is around 15 years minimum,or an indefinite period,until the prisoner is deemed safe to re-enter society.If someone is released on a 'life licence' then they are monitored regularly,for life.Though with government cut-backs,etc,this is not without it's problems.Surely in the case of young teens who murder each case should be looked at individually when determining sentencing!

Besides, I think 15 years in prison should be enough for a guy murdering his wife out of a panic reflex regarding money, or sexual affairs; and I think 30 years in prison is enough for life insurance policy exploitation (which is also a common case described).

@Kittyslasher69 in european countries jails rarely are the same as north american ones. in italy for instance they make it those that served from 5-12 years, generally 8 years can apply for part time release. if they are granted they can spend up to 45 days of the year at home. in germany those that do extra chores get extra rewards such as more tv or computer time. the reasons europeans do it is because they know giving prisoners some dignity results in less reoffending.

@Kittyslasher69 also about 75% of prisoners already had parents in prison. generally after their late 20's and early 30's people become less likely to offend. and about 90% of prisoners probably in my view probably are no longer a threat after 5-25 years depending on who the individual is. if so many prisoners had relatives, that means if prisoners who had kids for instance who were no longer deemed dangerous were freed, it means it is less likely that future generations would offend as well.

I probably would feel differently, you're right. But that leads me to another point: In that case I'd be the least qualified to bestow justice upon the 14 year old since I'd be biased. Victims aren't allowed to personally punish perpetrators for a reason -- unless it's Saudi Arabia.

Something is horribly wrong, I knew the american prison system was bad and didn't work. Prisons create criminals and harden them rather than rehabilitating them. But I wasn't aware that americunts in power could actually sentence teenagers to life in prison. That's just crazy, any psychiatris and psychologist would say the same.
Teen murderers should be incarcerated for a few years, with school behind bars. They will lose their teens, that and living with the guilt will be punishment enough.

this documentary misses the point of lwop - clearly the goal here IS NOT to rehabilitate them - while I agree that the retributive aspect overwhelms just look at prior times when she'd be executed (-> at least the special sentencing guidlines for death sentences are evidence that the death penalty is weighed higher than lwop, though some regard lwop to be more the tougher sentence.)

In New Zealand our longest ever sentence ever handed was 32 years in prison giving to a serial killer.
the second longest was to a mass killer who got 22 years.

@MrBritnic Even 14yr old with troubled background know whats a crime. We cannot go soft on criminals just because they had troublesome childhoods. Many people have had difficult lives, yet very few commit murders. However I do agree with parole after a decent time spent in prison.
In the UK teens are constantly murdering others (other teens, mothers & fathers), surely you cannot argue that they are just children and shouldn't face the full consequences.
