  • by far the coolest ice dancing routine i know, super intelligent execution of those things i (noob) associate with prehistorical anatomics

  • awesome video .. love it!! great talent =)

  • Chasing the spirit of the originality sometimes even great artists facing the dangerous hidden explosives, which can turn nuclear... So sad, that these talented Russian dicers got into this stupid Aborigine controversy. If somebody in the world decides to dance Russian national dance and do it wrong way - I thing nobody in Russia would give a dam! Go for that, just be brilliant - that all we ask!

  • "This video is a response to Lady Gaga - Bad Romance" LOL

  • this isn't offensive !! must be a honour for the aborigines and the Australian people that they was trying to represent someone of this interesting culture :)

  • @DannaLambieL as an Australian can i just say i didnt find it offensive as such, although maybe a little bit more research into the culture etc would have been good. If anything i thought the music was a bit off! It didnt really sound aboriginal, just weird lol.

  • @SomethingJF I completely agree. I'm also Australian, and I just thought that they hadn't done their research properly. The costumes were completely off, and that music sounds like it comes from Antarctica or something - nothing like any Aboriginal music.

  • How is this offensive? Did the Aborigines say that? Or is it PC people who don't know what they're talking about?

  • this is really nice....doing thier own cultural dance..and thier clothes...niice

  • @Ushouldreadthis XD!!!!!!!!!!! this was too much also for oompa loompas!

  • We should all be offended by the treatment of the Aboriginies by the Australian government and not by this dance.

  • They promote aboriginal culture on ice, it is so wonderful, beautiful and powerful! They are stand up from many of their competitors way ahead of them on the untouchable high level. Russian strong men with a knee problem and who can skate like a god without any complains. Sure many people both who support you and who don't will remember you for your courage.

  • Why was no one offended by the Canadians' ice dance? It wasn't real Spanish flamenco, they just dressed up in generic Spanish-y outfits and had a flamenco song. How it that any better or more "culturally sensitive" than what the Russians did?

Both teams performed creative, excellently coordinated, and artistic dances. People need to chill. The Russians were clearly not trying to mock Australian aboriginals and were just doing a tribal-theme dance. And as for research, it's not a thesis paper.

  • @MissIyer I guess the russian's song and outfit is more standoutish. Dancing to a spanish song seems more common so it's overlooked more.

I don't see anything thing wrong with the dance. Personally i think that the australian aboriginals just wanted some attention. There's always some tiny little thing to get offended about.

  • I didn't personally love the routine but it was very creative. People in general need to stop with the "I'm Offended" card. I'm so extremely sick of hearing about the multitude of offended people in the world. You would think they would be complimented that the skaters have an obvious interest in their culture.

  • @Ushouldreadthis

that is one of the funniest comments I've ever read on Youtube...

  • what is this song called? it's cool :)

  • Which dance was it when the russian pair were dressed in black, cuz u rly want to know the song they played

  • Domnina and Shabalin tried to show their respect to aboriginals by this dance, they just didn't know that free interpretation can hurt anybody... They found aboriginal culture very interestind to show but they just didn't cope their task. It doesn't look like aboriginals, but this guys are not racists!

  • well said! :)

  • The point is not whether YOU are offended by this routine, but whether the people that this dance imitated are offended by it.

If I did a dance imitating, say, native Americans, I would be mainly concerned about their society's view above any one else's.

INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS WERE OFFENDED BY THIS and that should be respected above anyone else's opinion.

Whether you think it's offensive or not is irrelevant.

Stop being so self absorbed people. This isn't being over sensitive, but respectful.

  • but they should have at least researched what they were trying to impersonate, or done something that they knoew more about. What they displayed was a stereotypical presentation of aboriginal culture. It has nothing in common with reality.

  • how stereotypical? Isn't this authentic Aborginal didgeridoo music? Would something less didgeridoo-esque be less stereotypical? and what is this talk of common reality? you are greatly misinformed if you think that ceremonial dances from any culture are "common" they are "ceremonial". they are elaborate and in some senses unreal to what happens on a daily basis. Now i'm not arguing whether the skaters did a good job on their piece, and I have to say I don't know much history of the dance this

  • The original costumes are FAR better than the "politically correct" versions worn in Vancouver.

Controversy is a sign of high art. If people are offended by the skaters' interpretations, have patience, the act will be over and gone in a few days. These artist/athletes must re-create a new performance next season. Then have faith, you who are overly sensitive will have nothing to complain about.

  • No.

    From Webster dictionary :

1 : being the first or earliest known of its kind present in a region

Aboriginal is used to describe any indigenous peoples in various parts of the world.

  • @Jacobob2 Right you are!

    I did not know.

    Another example.

2.aboriginal - an indigenous person who was born in a particular place;"the Canadian government scrapped plans to tax the grants to aboriginal college students"

  • @Jacobob2

    (part 2)

However in this case, they were specifically aiming for the Aboriginal people of Australia.

They even got advice on dance of the Aboriginal people of Australia. I admit, it does look a bit off. But it is ice skating, and what they did was fabulous! :o)

Well, you learn something every day!

    Thanks :o)

  • This hyper-sensitivity is what the world has come to. The ice dancing couple used something called creativity. For everyone who was "offended" by these outfits and dance: GET OVER IT!!!

  • the music from Kalyi Jag - hungarian gypsy music group!!! (Hungary is in Eastern - Europe !!!!! )

  • Uh, and the "American Cowboy" dance by the other couple, from France, maybe, was authentic??

  • HEY HEY IT'S THE OLYMPICS!!!!

  • Authentic what? To me this is abstract-- it feels instinctive and fun. It could be representing any tribe, but I think it is more representative of the nature of dance. I'm certain they were not trying to give "proper and authentic representation" to any particular group. I loved it. Lighten up people!

  • I'm Australian, but not aboriginal. And although I thought they were fantastic figure skaters, neither their costumes or their routine were anything like any aboriginal tribal dances I have ever seen. I just think that if they were supposed to be portraying a countries native dance then they should have researched properly.

  • They clearly have awesome skills. Regardless of their creative choices. This was hi-energy fun with amzin technique . I didnt like the music, the style, the costumes, their look and i can STILL see they deserve total respect for their work here

  • It's offensive because of their inappropriate choice of costume, and the fact that the music isn't even aboriginal. Also, the leaves in their hair make them look more like Adam and Eve than Aborigines. It's not that they're being rude, it's just that they're misrepresenting the aboriginal culture. I don't hold it against them too much though, because they are from a very different culture and the effort that they made is very good.

  • I thought they did an honorable job. It wouldn't matter what culture they chose to honour, someone would be offended. Probably even if it was their own culture. They are dancing on ice, I'm in no position to judge

  • was that authentic Aboriginal music? It was cool! I want to hear more. I could hear the didgereedoo

  • wow, the music, was it authentic Aboriginal music? it was cool. I want to hear more.

  • i thought their routine at the olympics was bizarre

  • It's ironic that the so-called liberal minded are the most unaccepting -- constantly critiquing others. Lighten-up. This is simply playful, art-interpretation - not a meant to be a documentary.

  • I liked it original choreography and fabulous costumes

  • Is this a deleted scene from "Blades of Glory"?

  • Could be!

  • I think people need to lighten up. Art imitates life -and- life imitates art. It is interesting and left up to interpretation of the artist...I loved it

  • People complain about the dumbest things. I would consider this a tribute to my culture. If they came out in afro wigs and did a hip hop routine(I'm Black), I wouldn't be offended. I'd consider it a tribute to A PIECE OF AMERICAN CULTURE. If you want to be SO friggin different all the time about EVERYTHING, go live on Mars or something.

  • An instructor once told us "to be unoffendable". In that spirit: this dance is lovely!

  • I don't get what the prob is???? What did they do wrong?????

  • @thomi2001 : They did nothing wrong !!! I like this Russian couple and especially their free dance. I think that they got robbed of a gold medal.

  • People should stop trying to find the bad in other people and appreciate the good. So they didn't do exact aboriginal steps, so what, they made an effort to spot light that culture and did their best, no harm was meant I'm sure

  • I think these 2 put alot of hard work and effort into this routine. To me (American) it was creative, playful at times and entertaining. Too bad that the Aboriginal who was offended by their creative work of art feels as though his feelings were hurt. Aww. 10!

  • if u ask me i think the skating is quite good plus it looks very difficult with all the like uhh mini jumps and plus it was very fast!

-i agree with you 2 thumbs up

  • i don't get what was offensive about it either maybe it's just because i don't know enough about it

  • I can understand finding offense if you were aboriginal, but to me this is very creative and original.

  • I loved their performance, costumes and all! It clearly shows talent, which is all that should really matter in this competition, but I felt that their costumes were equally creative and very fun looking. Who cares what color their tights were (besides the obvious...)?

  • I dont see how this is offensive

  • ... I don't get it either... How is it offensive?

  • I don't get it. what's so offensive about this?

  • wow... o.O?

  • I loved it!! it was so cool and unique

  • wisdaniel:

the americans aren't the ones making the complaint its the Aboriginal leaders that are. That means mainly people from australia...which is not in North America. But i do agree this dance was fantastic and i did research on Aboriginal dancing and culture and i saw a lot of info that is similar to what they portrayed. these skaters nailed this.

  • this is the Olympics?

  • I don't get what the "offensive" deal is either, it was unique

  • Wow, I dont get the problem? The only semi "offensive" part is aroubd 2:34, but its nothing to get upset over!! I thought it was cool

  • I thought this was pretty cool and creative!

  • Yes, there is probably someone out there that is offended that I had a peanut butter sandwich today....

Russians, please ignore all this P.C. B.S. , your dance was beautiful and very creative.

  • Its art! and its nature. they need to get over it!

  • good dance

  • I like the music.

  • i thought it was good

  • Our society is too damn PC. My advice to the Russians: just ignore us stupid American's. We have fake outrage about almost everything.

  • It wasn't the americans who brought up the issue....

  • it wasn't Americans, it was Aboriginal leaders from Australia...

  • I don't get it... what's offensive?

  • I have never watched any figure skating before, but I am convinced this is the greatest and most profound performance of the medium to date.

  • @BaronAmbrosia i've seen way better

  • It's not like they were dancing normally, they're on ice and there are certain things that you can't do in a normal dance on the ground...then there might have been a larger problem.

  • I think it is really cool.

  • These profoundly beautiful stylized moves that so faithfully capture the aborigine folk dance do not offend anyone, aborigines in the least! They actually do them and the ice skating art a credit! If the couple were Americans they would have been praized and clebrated for their artistry and not persecuted!

It's a shameful thing the us media do insinuating that the russians' rendition of the aborigin dance tradition was a mocker !!.

  • Ppl are stupid who does even know the original aboriginal music? This is art and skating in first place.

  • they are skilled ice dancers but I found the music very disturbing

  • I have not seen any Olypic games activity. This by far is the best performace I have ever seen on the ICE. Finally a energetic cave man rustic interpretation, very masculine. Most of all the ICE is a turn off for me but this is an "EYE Opener" . I really missed some action this was a 10 in my eye regardless if it is offensive. It is only offensive to weak humans who do not see the raw human behavior. It is alive and energetic .

  • People are just too sensitive.

  • I find this annoying but artsy not offensive at all

  • I believe this was really good. Why do people get so worked up over dumb stuff. The Russian were wonderful and the Performance actually made me wanna research the aboriginal religion. they should get the gold and the Australians just need to build a bridge and get over it, Its done with and over. Too late to do anything about it.

  • this is not offensive and you aboriginal people should grow the f

  • can someone please explain why this is offensive?...

  • Have you seen traditional Aborigine dance?

  • Absolutely amazing effort on these fine young athletes part. How could one be offended when they could have just as easily not been the chosen country to pay tribute to. I think that the Australian tribal delegates have grown a little to fiesty and judged too hastily. This young couple did a tremendous job let alone a remarkable portrayal of an ancient dance that isn't taught to outsiders. I applaud them in their efforts and I believe they deserve an apology.

  • Who did it offend ??? I thought it was great...music is a little different...but not offensive at all...!!!

  • Well, I think it is excellent.

I am a New Zealander and my father is an Australian.

You should see my Dutch partner do the haka. It is helarious! :o)

I think it is very common for people to not like outsiders copy their traditions. But I think they were fabulous. The people in Australia need to realise that people all around the world are facinated by Australia. They should take it as a compliment rather than critisise.

  • Not offensive at all....Who did it offend anyhow...????

  • My wife and I saw nothing wrong with their dance, they had originality and was done in good taste. Bravo!!!!

  • How was this offensive?

  • Very nice!!!

  • I didn't watch the olympic perfomance however seeing it here, I didn't find it offensive. The routine was a bit lacklustre, but not offensive.

  • offensive? what?!

    this is art...

  • Fantastic, music was brilliant - dance was really fast and explosive - Australians should be proud and not offended! Wonderful interpretation of this old and unknown world dance. Go Russia!

  • what a great performance. their using an aboriginal theme shouldn't have detracted from their ability to win the gold.

  • i dont see anything wrong with it, i thought it was pretty good...

  • If you are not Aborigines, how the heck do you know if it's offensive or not?

  • Because humans have the ability to be empathetic.

  • isn't offensive bravo!

  • This version was better than the toned down version performed at the Olympics.

  • I thought it was good, channel 9 commentator obviously doesnt know anything as they scored well. its always the politically correct do gooders stirring up trouble. It was a good performance.

  • Original... Aboriginal!

  • it's not offensive. it's a representation of a culture. would people say it's offensive if it were an american indian dance? pathetic channel 9 commentators!! particularly the woman. talking as if she has the only say on what is right and wrong

  • They are the unique figure skaters !!!

  • @mzgizee It is not an ice dance!!! This is a magic !!!

  • one word.... WOW....

  • I think this is quit imaginative and fun. I like it. Very original.

  • Whats the name of the song? I just love it!

  • come to think of it these costumes do an amazing job of hiding their obvious lack of basic skating skills. clever.

  • @tanbark1 they're actually really good. learn your stuff please.

  • @tanbark1

interesting opinion, seeing as they placed first in the first program, which is wholly based on proper execution of skating skills and maneuvers. Also strange seeing as they got a perfect modifier on skating technique from all judges.

  • very unique

  • Its GooD!
