My Nana used to work with german prisoners of war she says she had heard bad storys of there war crimes in the east and thought they were evil but she said once she got to know them they were normal good people she says the men used to cry because they didnt know if there familys were ok and if there children were still alive she says they were were normal people who loved there country that they weren the same both followingn orders
The Germans were treated very well by the Americans in POW camps in the US. Especially the ones in the midwest where German POWs were assigned duites on farms, run predominantly by German-American farmers.
One of the dreaded places to be interred was Clewiston, Florida where POWs worked in the heat cutting sugar cane.
@Quasimodo1957 Yes.I grew up in MN where german immigrants were thick. We deerhunted and snowmobiled in what the locals still call 'the POW'. My grandpa was a german farmer and told my dad stories about the nearby camp/s.The germans had it made up here.
I had the opportunity of speaking with many former WWII German prisoners of war. Most told me of being very well treated by the Americans. American POWs were not so lucky.
@whiff1962 Canada took in a lot of German POW's. They were treated very well. Clean bungalows, beds with linens, sinks, 3 good squares a day. After the war many decided to stay in Canada and indeed they did. Too bad our own were not treated as kindly. They loved Canada. To be caught by the Japanese was a death sentence. torture, beheading, rapes. Many stated they wd rather surender to the Germans than the Japanese. They were not soldiers, just beasts.
Thanks so much for posting these great BBC Time Watch WW II docs.... we dont get them in the USA..great to see them on Youtube ! Thanks so much for posting ! TCUNC76
some americans did few atrocities during the war but this was nothing to compare to what the japs, russians, or germans did. war is hell. my granpa said that after surviving the war in europe.
@AnikinTal The only military in WW2 that had not one reported case of a soldier raping someone or miss treating prisoners of war was the British army! Thats a record to be proud of.
The Germans treated American and British POW well, except if you are a Russian because they didn't sign the Geneva Convention. The Japanese weren't treated well because of how the treated American and British POW's such as the death march and because of the way they looked. Germans looked like your typical white person like any other American.
@quest8899 If you got taken prisoner. According to Ambrose, Americans were more likely than Brits or French forces to kill surrendering German soldiers.
Great to watch! Thanks for the upload!

wow, no wonder we bungled the Iraq war, we didn't re-educate the followers of Saddam. I guess the same could be said for the Afgan war.

German POWs were apparently treated better in the UK than by Eisenhower's forces in Germany.

@AnikinTal how is that noting compared to the germans ????
Mortality rates for US-British POWs in German hands were no more than 3%.
there were almost no Germans who served war crime penalties for their actions as POW guards or commandants.
