He could fight in the UFC they offer him all the time, but he says he likes to fight more often than that because between each fight in the ufc you could have 3 months between your next fight, so he chooses to be free lance, and the ufc wants more of someone who they can tie down, cuz what if he came in and knocked out lyoto machida and left, thats why he doesnt fight in the ufc.
