You have to beat the story mode for all of the characters then you have to beat chaos. After that you do the story modes for Gabranth and Shantotto if you beat them you can buy them from the PP Catalog.

Jecht was originally sided with Cosmos. Then in order to face his son he turned towards Chaos. In a scene during the Shade of Impulse The Emperor tell Jecht how he used the remaining light within Jecht to make himself more powerful. Jecht gets mad and runs off to find an "opponent who has the heart for combat"

There are different reasons for each of the characters to be chosen, all mixed and matched with their games. Jecht seemingly dissapeared in his world to another, and Tidus follows some time later - which is what happens here. Jecht may be a good guy - but he's a douche of a father, which makes him a better enemy to Tidus than Seymour did. If Seymour was the FFX villain, the match would be Yuna.

No offense, but that's... kinda lame how they integrated Shantotto and Gabranth into the story for this game. I mean, a flashback is probably the cheapest way of adding a character.

They should have just add them normally, as in "special reinforcements", like for instance, Gabranth bursts in and attacks the Warriors of Light, and Shantotto then appears to help them out. That would have a greater impact and be more surprising, as in "dude, where these 2 come from !?"
