Sometimes, when my acute paranoia kicks in and I begin to worry about the eventual robot uprising, I watch the first half of this video to ease my worries.
What are you doing? Stop it! I-i-i-i-i-i-i-i— We-e-e-e are pleased that you made it through the final challenge where we pretended we were going to murder you with pancake mix.
After seeing this, I've got a better hope for the Robot Apocalypse occurring (as I now know that robots, in the beginning of their uprising, won't know how to shoot unless their taught. And even then, they wouldn't be able to hit the broad side of a barn on their first few 49 tries). J/k
This is hilarious. I love how terrible it is at flipping the pancakes. It might also be a good lesson for kids, on the whole 'don't give up learning something' thing. It took a ROBOT 50 tries to flip a pancake!

I hope future robots won't be this derpy. And wouldn't it be easier to make two arms and have one programed for flipping the pancakes with a spatula? 'Cause a robot won't need to show off with a trick like flipping a pancake they'll be programmed for efficiency.
Ese robot no sirve tipo vota eso... kee tall sii las personas tubieran un robot d esos less ubieran botado todas las pancake al zuelo y stubieran komiendo la mugre del piso....
When life gives you pancake mix, don't make pancakes. Make life take the pancake mix back! GET MAD! I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN PANCAKES, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE? DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'M THE MAN WHO'S GONNA BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN! WITH THE PANCAKES! I'M GONNA GET MY ENGINEERS TO INVENT A COMBUSTIBLE PANCAKE THAT BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?!
"Even if the same person never fights the robot twice, it may create a super style of fighting."
The goal of robotics should be to make the world a better place, not a gigantic war zone.
Hopefully this futuristic wobot will be so good at learning, it realises that attrition is not the most effective means of gain; a concept humans struggle with.
While a learning robot may be cool and possibly useful in the future, it could be the way that some theories say the robots will take over. An example of this is is that if one or more people fight a learning robot, initially the robot may loose, but after a while it will learn the strategies of the people fighting it and use the knowledge of those strategies to win. Even if the same person never fights the robot twice, it may create a super style of fighting. Even so this is a cool arm.
There is something really hilarious about this..the first 50 tries the only thing I could think of is Stupid machine! and also I imagined the pancake falling on the professor that created it's head..
@chefgarno18 The video might look stupid but these are just baby steps, they're trying to develop a robot that can learn skills rather than having them programmed into it, which could really benefit in the future.
Fire the guys that made that robot, and build better robots. Then run those robots through a regimen of trust exercises, creating a foundation of mutual respect reinforced by the simulated bonds of artificial friendship. Inspiring stuff.
I don't care about the number of trials, they do eventually learn, that's what counts. thanks for the vid. I'm just concerned about the "learning" process. is it just the software itself, or is there any human interference (like some manual tuning required) ? "we desperately need hackers to protect humankind in the future" don't you think? :)
i have a much quicker method, you could spend ages building and perfecting a robot and then teach it to flip pancakes OR flip pancakes yourself...hmmmm
The problem with machine learning is that before a robot can learn anything, a scientist need to know that skill. Scientist aren't exactly known for the mad motor skillz.
@flameomega1 Pretty sure they were motion capturing it from the first trial, they just didn't show us until later. They used the motion-tracking fake pancake for all the tests, anyway.
How else is the robot supposed to learn what worked and what didn't? Or refine its strategy via anything other than just randomly trying different things until someone tells it "that worked"?

Well, at least it can improve its skills by practising. But to be honest you should add decent vision which doen't need markers and one-shot goal acquisition by watching a human flipping real pancakes.
