You have no clue. Smart meters save the utilities money, and can help you realize the energy you are using much more easily. With more knowledge of the energy you are using, you too can save money.

The government could use targeted power shut off to meet emission goals or more devious objectives like selective punishment for dissenting citizens. Look at what they did in California recently, shutting off the water to an agricultural community to save a minnow, then opening the flood gates after certain legislators agreed to vote in favor of nationalized health care. The ability to cherry pick any US household and instantaneously shut off the power with a single key stroke is our new reality
A tyrannical government could issue carbon ration cards, they already want to tax the air we breath. The ultimate government goal, in my opinion, is rationing. Dept of Energy also required the ability to remotely shut off your power.The utility company may have a goal of implementing a mind numbing, complex, tiered pricing model that will extract the maximum profit from the uninformed customer.
