I just made my first cure using colored borax and Pro Glow red color. The roe turned out perfect red, and it milks-out like a crazy mofo. Dont dump out any juice though!!!
Great video, I like borax the best, pretty much because it's simplest to me and it works. You hit the nail right on the head in my mind. I got one nice sized female chinook and the guy who netted my fish ended up helping himself to one of my skeins...???? One guy noticed and gave the guy crap but he ran off with half my roe anyway. Im a young guy, not very big so alot of guys give me shit around the river, but what can ya do..
@BCER83 honetly check out tackle shop. I've seen neon red at both berrys and army and navy...however I will agree with the previous reply, red sucks. I fish orange when I cure my own
@JimmyD952 I pull the skeins out of the jar, put them in a zip top plastic bag and then put that into my bait box. i try not to have excess borax with me because as it gets moist, it turns gummy. while its not really a big deal, sometimes the roe will turn to a 'jam' type consistancy in the bag. depending on water conditions, i put a chunk of roe in to the bait loop and cast away. no cleaning off, just whatever was on them when they came out of the jar.
Don't pour off the juice that develops in the jar. If you leave it overnight the juice will be re-absorbed by the roe and you will end up with nice and "plump" eggs ;)
I noticed you didn't wear gloves while handling the roe. When I fished for Chinook this fall I went with a guide because I had never fished for Salmon before. He used gloves when handling the roe and also used scents. I ended up with a nice 25 pounder (no bullshit) so figured he must have been doing something right. Also caught a nice size Jack (fishery released). So, again, are the gloves a good idea while curing the roe or just when baiting or not necessary at all??? Good job on video.
Gloves are part of "stylized" you caught fish, he did it right! The problem is in the beliefs that fishermen have. Taking superstitions and what others have showed or told us and faithfully obey those beliefs thinking that's the way it's done.
We hit the river practicing those beliefs and have positive results, those beliefs become more concrete in our minds. The more fish you catch, the more firmly we'll believe things like your lucky hat is what gave you the edge. It's pretty much BS.

It all comes down to getting out there and going fishing, which is the whole point. You'll never catch a fish unless you go fishing.
Get out there, find out what works, have fun, give back to the resource.

So I guess it all comes down to experimentation and what works for us. I appreciate your philosophical views and video.
