@cunfuzzed how's your supersonic airliner working out? got it built yet? we just retired ours after 30 years service. after hitting bits of one of your american dc-10's in Paris that is! ;)
Saab just about holds on to some good bits with this old 9-5, but the 9k is where true Saab is at, T5 engines... the new 9-3/9-5 with T8 engines gets really into the GM stride = sh!ite.............. let's hope Spyker rekindles the original passion of Saab.........and I'm not talking about the 2010 9-5 either.........as that is still GM's b!tch, on cross over.
@ballisticbastard Actually America has faster jets, and if you want to talk about older technology, im sure the 1970 LS6 Chevelle would beat anything you could realistically match it against.
@VigilanteAgumon Where did I say anything McDonnell Douglas? The FGA.1 (the developmental aircraft that led to the Harrier) was tested by the Army, Navy, USAF, and NASA.
When someone asks why I hate GM, I only have to say that it's because of what they did to such a nice automobile company. GM ruined SAAB and its reputation.
the jet could follow the confines of the track by "hover taxiing" (basically using the engines to keep it airbourne yet moving around slowly, like a helicopter) and no i doubt that he would have followed hammerhead flat out lols
Sounds great : SAAB SPYKER 9-5 ........ Tate the name again ....... ? Just a lovely name - sorry to say though ...... SAAB will not exist in 10 years time ....
@Gillesager264 lol.. seems u dont have a clue what ur talking about. but then again, what do denmark got thats worth mentioning? windmills and a fucked up numbersystem? i bet in 10 year, u danish people dont even understand eachother, couse of that ugly language..
As an owner of Saab 9000 I love it. I'm kind of like to keep with Saab, but I also have thought of Volvo wagon for my next vehicle. What I'd like to see changes in the Saab auto industry is Saab diversified their automobile product line; such as pick-up truck, mini van, and smaller version sport coups with more affordable prices in order to stay competative with other auto industries. Hopefully it happens in my life time.
@s1prark Hell no. Saab should never add a pickup truck or minivan and should never have made an SUV. A Saab coupe would be nice, but a truck or van would be a disgrace.
In respose to tyr4nt94 the 9-3 Aero is not a vectra rebadged as a SAAB with the roof cut off. The basic chassis is the same but it was significantly changed by SAAB. The engine is a GM unit but it's ancillaries and electronics are SAAB designed. The aero also has way more tricks up it's sleeve vs the vectra. I have owned both vehicles and they are as different as chalk and cheese. I do agree that GM did SAAB no favours especially with interior quality. Lets see what Spyker can do :)
All I hear is that the older SAABS, early 90's models and older, were typically more reliable than it's latest offerings. Obviously that was before GM took them over. But what essentially changed w/them mechanically though, since the takeover? All I see is the 9-5 and 9-3 losing it's hatch to a trunk which then was a 9000/900.
Sigh, GM won't stop leaving car companies alone, but now its all too intertwined, so many cars produced by GM share so many of the components, for example the GM Vauxhall Monaro VXR8 uses a 5.2 litre GM Chevrolet Corvette engine... and now SAAB will be left in the dark again as GM droppd out of the deal where they were going to sell SAAB to Koenigsegg... maybe your right, they are too scared
also every since SAAB were owned by GM all of their new cars are pretty much rebaged old ones, the 9-3 areo, well thats just a Vauxhall Vectra with the roof cut off and a SAAB badge stuck on
I hate the way Clarkson puts a stupid spin on it making the Saab look stupid just becaus he hates GM. The 9-5 Aero is actually very quick and maybe if the Stig didn't use the handbrake and skid around all over the place it would have done a better time. It's all staged to make the Saab look bad.
"What do you think the Royal Navy would say..." LOL. @jopiira: I like Saabs, so screw you. I like Volvo better though! LOL. So, the 9-5 is made by GM!? Christ, the sickness is spreading. Why can't car companies just build their OWN goddamn cars? It's annoying; you can'[t even argue "X is better than Z", because it's usually the same damn car! Remember when an Pontiac was a Pontiac? Me neither. It's annoying. Funny that he points out the Saab jet has a Volvo engine. Like I said, Volvo kicks ass.
I like Saabs, but I can't believe Top Gear did such a plain car. On another note, I'm strongly considering buying a used 9-5. They're under $4000 with less than 100k miles.

top gear is pathetic , comparing a jet fighter against a car ???? that makes sense ......isnt it also funny , some of the wankers from top gear get a plane to go half way across the country , while some walk on fooot and some how they ALWAYS make it to the destination within a few minutes of each other,,,,labsolutely pathetic.
Well at lest the Saab had it off the line, And the say Saab born from jets, that saying died with the GOOD classic Saabs. GM murdered Saab now the are born from Ople's.
Samsemtex, cynicaldriver, I enjoyed reading each of your comments, I thought I was the only one who hated GM's management of the Saab brand. in fact whats sad is we now haveta refer to Saab as a brand instead of the unique independent manufacturer it once was. I think most ppl judge Saabs by the newer models which are far worse than the classic 9-3s and 900s. I'm proud to own a 1999 9-3, the last of the good Saabs before GM bought out the other half in '00. But oh how i'd love to get an ol' SPG!
I am the owner of Saab Aero but the interior quality is pretty shitty, cheap plastic everywhere, the only good thing is the turbo charge engine. Miss the good old Saab.
"Now what I'd like to do at this point".....is to point out that 1) Clarkson is an arsehole 2) Saabs are built by Saab using a degree of GM-designed components 3) The jet engines are Svenska Flygmotor using General Electric technology, and 4) I've always said that the "Stig" must be a failed racing or test driver - Ben Collins is an ex. stunt driver and oval racer, so he's not even a proper racer to start with.
Besides, it's an insult to the legendary Stig Blomqvist, 1984 WRC champion.
Yes, because Saab SOOO needed an SUV! NOT!! Saab also was missing that 9-2 failure that was also GM's idea. Most of all Saab needed to stop offering the 9-5 in a v6!
Yes, all stunning examples of how much help GM was to Saab... But they did steal the vent control knobs from us and stick them in the Cadillacs! You wouldn't know fun if it jumped up and bit you in the arse.
Go drive a Cobalt and leave those of us with taste alone.
Go on then mate if you love SAAB so much go and buy them oh right you don't have enough money, but who does maybe GM does because they bought them in the first place fool.
You said the SportWagon isnt a true Saab. In NZ the SportWagon refers to the 9-5 wagon. And the other wagon is called the SportCombi for the 9-3. The 9-5SportWagon pays homeage to the original Saab wagon of its early days called the Saab 95 pronounced ninetyfive rather than ninefive.
ah, I was referring to the Saab 9-2x, which was only available as a sport wagon
the 9-5 sport wagon (I call em all sport wagons, sorry for the confusion) i don't really have a problem with, the 9-3 combi I'm more pissed about just because it replaced the hatch option
I agree the 9-2x is not a true Saab but a desperate attempt for GM to make a quick buck. Even so I would dearly love to own one. According to GM and Saab the 9-2x has a rear wrap around window inspired from the 9-5SportWagon. Because the 9-2x was only availible in wagon form the car is simply 9-2x. The hatchback was dropped because premium auto buyers were nolonger interested in hatchbacks. Today the fastback idea is becoming popular, will have to wait and see what happens ae?
I think Saabs are great cars but GM did ruin their image, all their interiors look like other GM cars, except for the really comfortable seats and key placement. Also, I've always seen people sell their Saabs with only about 30k miles, and no one would buy em. The Saab 9-7x is basically a Oldsmobile Bravada or a Chevy Trailblazer, interior looks so cheap. The 9-2x is really a subaru impreza in a Saab suit. They really are losing their character. 1 mill miles in an older Saab, howbout a new one?
Actually Saab really did need an SUV. Its been outlined by both General Motors and Saab that they needed an SUV as quick as possible to catch some of the Saab customers who were leaving Saab to buy competitors SUV's, so thus the 9-7x was born. I think they are pretty cool, wish they were availible in NZ but its the US with the demand for SUV's.
yeah but they took a Trailblazer, changed some trim, slapped a Saab sticker on it, and expected people to pay the premium price for it. The 9-7x jus didnt stand out and to me the interior honestly felt like a Suburban.
tho its not just Saab SUVs that are out of character, I dont think Porsche & BMW shoulda made an SUV either. Totally goes against these companies claim's of a racing hertiage.
But if Saab, BMW and Porsche didnt make SUV's they would have missed out on alot of sales. I have read that one consumer choose a 9-7x Aero over the Porsche! Gues you cold say the same about the Toyota Motor Company, its premium brand Lexus used a model Alteza from the mainstream brand Toyota and rebadged it as a RS200. That was also a case of slapping in some trim and putting a new badge on. The 9-7x is known for being far superior on road, much more quieter and refined, Cheers 2 Saab for that!
Saab would be nothing without GM? Are you for real? GM destroyed Saab. They took away everything that was good about Saab and replaced it with Opel underpinnings. I see a good few 900s around and they were very reliable. When GM tookover Saabs reliability plummeted.
they review family cars as well? and there are people who can afford supercars...and do you think anyone would tune in if they only reviewed fiat pandas and volvos...
"The series are produced by GE Aviation. Partners include Volvo Aero, which builds the RM12 variant. The F404 was developed into the larger F414 turbofan..."

i thought alpha's were known to be the "real cars"

If that Saab can't beat a Harrier, then what makes you think it can beat Saab's jets (Draken, Viggen, Gripen)?

I'm voting for a BAE Harrier II vs. SAAB Gripen race in the season 13!
Prefferably they'd race at the same time.

The Topgear people are spoiled (OLD) brats, they're used to drive, Veyron, RS 8, Diablo, BMW M6 Mercedes Mclaren, and thats just Bollocks!
How many real people really have that cash to buy this?
Saab, Volvo, Bmw, Audio, VW are consumer cars, and they don't have the same performance.
if you tune them, of course the get different results, but then we talking a lot of cash and it would be more cheaper to buy a used older sportscar.
Topgear is a funny program, but not the least realistic.

You seem to be misjudging the show, it is more comedic than realistic, and the sooner you realize this, the sooner you can enjoy the show.

that's really funny. I like top gear. They do these unusual stunts that others cant. Let's go out from fifth gear, and into top gear. :P
