He took many of these lyrics from a David Berman poem. Props for liking Berman. But booo for writing a mediocre (at best) song based on a seemingly random selection of Berman lines.
jesus....i watched that video like 5 times yesterday and made my thoughts about what i would use my one phonecall for and then later at night i almost got into jail and was happy that i made those thoughts :D
Wish the police were this hip in my town! Jens come to Traverse City, Michigan and make our whole town hip! Jens music is a mix of Morrissey and Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers with a splash of The Mamas & The Papas accompanied by Martha Reeves backing music. Just great!
So I called the police, and she called the police, and when my police got there they started fightin' with her police, cuz shit's crazy around here bro...we make CHEESE, we make BIZKITS....ya heard?
even though he's literally a cross between belle and sebastian and magnetic fields...that doesn't stop him from sounding unique...odd innit? I love you Jens
i don't understand why he's not big yet! catchy as hell and has that old-fashioned aucoustic pop thing going on with his voice and singing style and all. heart!
Continuity error: Jens is sitting in the middle of the van. However in some shots from "outside" the police van (0:44, 1:21, 1:49) there's clearly no one in the middle. Nice try Jens.
If you're criticizing her for using the word shiny as opposed to shining, then you might try spelling bastardized with an A. If you're criticizing her for not using a "u" in the word "armor," you need to respect the fact that British English and American English are recognized as different languages. And while you're at it, respect the fact that the english language was brought to you by Germanic immigrants. So, ya know...tax your own tea. Hope that helps.
I am bemused by the inferrence that English was imported to England by the Germans. It is a development of Anglo-Saxon, with a peppering of Viking/French words, which have had an impact on the development of our language. The point I was making is, there is no excuse for sloppiness of any sort at all. Knight in shining armour, has a British cultural reference point too. Incidently, Morrissey is a Mancunian, as I am. I can translate that into Amercan English should you wish. Hope this helps.
I hope you're pretending to misunderstand my comment that the roots of English are German. My only point there was that language is a continuum, so it's kind of unfair to be a heckler about it.
Now, I'll be honest, I did look up the history of that phrase for the point of this discussion, but according to what I found, the first uses of it to describe someone figuratively were in America-in American English. On the other hand, Jens is wearing armor in the video, so ya got me there.
Thomas Rodd 1812, first recorded English use of this idiom. Not a Heckler at all, just raising it as an issue and for healthy debate, and one who has a keen interest in the celebration of the rich use of English, rather than the slovenly (eg. shiny for shining) way it can develop or deteriorate. Yes Jens is wearing armour, although there we no knights in Sweden, so yet another conundrum. C'est la vie.
Thank you so much for your erudite comments, which may I suggest, illustrate the point that I am making in a most splendid, and illuminative fashion. Thank you once again, too kind. (I thank that I shall decine your kind suggestion of having congress with a bovine)
@espark1089 "Forcing a succession of semi-obscure words is not synonymous with intelligence"
I keep on trying to work out whether this in reference to this song or perhaps an earlier comment? I've watched the video several times now and there do not seem to be any 'semi-obscure' words, unless by semi-obscure you mean 'non-monosyllabic'... I know your comment is over a year old, but if you could reply with a quote I would be grateful as this is bugging me more than it should.
