In the Elizabethan era, the word smock was considered indecent, so it was changed to shift. In the Victorian Era, the word shift was considered indecent so they borrowed the word "chemise" from the French.

I thought the Chemise was a word adapted from the Norman French and adapted after the invasion of 1066. I thought that smocks were over shirts, but that you could get smocked shifts. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Chemise does come from an Old French word, but it meant shirt and was usually used in reference to soldiers, which made it a harmless word for an undergarment when all the other words were deemed vulgar. The meaning of Smock as being worn over garments didn't come into being until the turn of the 20th century. Smocks being overshirts like how artists wear them didn't come into use until the 1930s.

Okay, I've got my books out according to "The History of Undergarments" by C.Willett and Phillis Cunningham in the medieval period id was called a smock, and then later refers to the garment from the 1400's as chemise, referring to the Norman Invasion. In the 1485-1625 period the garments are referred to as smock, but the book referrers to it as a chemise, which is where I must have started to get confused. 1626-1710 the books calls it both shift and smock but no reference to

I had an American friend stay over who called her waistcoat a vest. In England vest is normally an old close fitting T-shirt worn under garments in winter when it's cold. It's in common usage over here and vest are worn my nearly every small child in winter, I always wear one from autumn until spring. It's not considered slang. In the 50's small children used to wear "Liberty bodices" which were padded vests, like mini-corsets, but they are now extinct!
