...I solved the prob by "tailgating someone thru the turn-style (it's more like a gate or barrier that splits open in the middle than it is an actual turn-style). 7) nasty moldy carpets. I'll take the character, graffiti, much much more interesting and diverse commuters of NYC MTA ANY DAY OVER to the yuppie scum and suburban zombies on DC Metro. It's absolutely the worst
@hatchbx I'm a NYC resident and I've been to DC. The Metro is so much better than the NYC subway. The NYC is overcrowded and full of rats and bums. The stations smell like piss. The Metro on its worse day is a million times better than the NYC subway. Trains on the Metro are much faster than the trains in NY.
5) 2 tiered fare system---they charge a steeper fare DURING RUSH HOURS, so much for providing incentive to encourage public trans during rush hour. 6) No bus to train transfers; only train to bus. 3-B) I forgot to add that the Exit Fare Kiosks only take $1 and $5 bills, nothing larger, and no credit, and the change is given back only in coins. Last time I was in DC, got stuck like that; employee told me to ask commuters for change b/c they don't give change at the info desks!...
...3) I guess you'd term it a "metered fare"---you actually have to put your metro card back into a turn-style feeder to EXIT, and since the fare increases the further you travel, depending on whether you had charged enough money on card at your starting point, you'll be rejected and forced to go to exit fare kiosk and put more money on the card 4) OUTLANDISHLY OVERPRICED!!! Rush hour from furthest VA suburb (Vienna, Orange Line) to downtown over $3.40 ONE WAY!!!...
Between this, NYC's MTA and Chicago's CTA (I've lived in all 3 cities), DC Metro is by far the worst and most inadequate system! 1) It doesn't even run 24/7...it shuts down at midnight on week nights! 2) It doesn't extend nearly far enough into the suburbs, esp. in VA...
