Placido Domingo is not my favorite by far but there is no one else I have ever heard sing his song like he does. I wept and was profoundly moved by it he first ime I heard it. Placido is who sung it. Not even Pavarotti or Bocelli.
@TheCootydog Try Di Stefano,Corelli,Bjorling,Gigli,Fleta,Del Monaco,Fillipeschi, Lauri Volpi,Keipura,Wunderlich,Lemeshev,Gedda,Pertile,Barioni,Cortis,Masini,Thill,Taglivini,Schipa,Raimondi,Aragal,Mariano,&of course Caruso sings it the best.
@BERNARDOANUK To state simply' No.Domingo is better in this aria'.is really objective. As it would be objective for me to say he is not. However my suggestion to(TheCootydog)was to TRY these other tenors as he only mentions Pavarotti& Bocelli as a comparison, which nether one sing it well. But,if you prefer Domingo in this aria, although he does sing it well vocally, I do prefer other tenors who do a filatura,or A mezza VOCE unlike Mr. Domingo who sings it in full voice throughout without much nuance
@sugarbist I have listened to many tenors singing this aria and prefierp to Domingo not for his vocal technology but for his extreme passion. Certainly that I gave his messa di voce it is practically void but it compensates it with his dramatic quality in the phrasing. For my alone taste this DiStefano to the same level in this aria. About Bocelli I prefer mas not speaking because he is not a singer of professional Opera. Regards.
@BERNARDOANUK I understand why you like Mr. Domingo here as he does sound very good vocally. There have been many tenors that do sing this aria without using mezza voce and it is quite acceptable.I do agree with your comment about Mr. Bocelli. Enjoy
@sugarbist I enjoy very much when i listen to Franco Corelli in this aria using a very fantastic "messa di voce". But i prefer Domingo in this because he use all his power and that goes inside my soul. But i know that this aria must be to sing correctly using "messa di voce" because Puccini write so...
@BERNARDOANUK Yes Domingo does sing this extremely well vocally and it is wonderful that you enjoy it the way you do. I am not trying to lure you away from PD as your favorite. But you might want to try Del Monaco as a point of interest , as MDM does not do a mezza voce in the aria.UP loaded by Oneguin65.
@BERNARDOANUK Interesting,Yes Del Monaco had a hard voice on records, but it was a true Dramatic voice. When hearing MDM live, that steel edge was not so prominent.I don't know why you do not understand a word,as his diction was truly impeccable.Perhaps try Forza 1953 with Tebaldi to hear what MDM truly sounded like live,&1946,Ballo.in Maschera. He was perhaps in a category of (phenomenal voices) with Lauri Volpi, Caruso,Tamagno&Paoli. His high notes were among the greatest in opera history.Enjoy.
@sugarbist I have just listened to Del Monaco in "Foraza" with Tebaldi and "Ballo" and the truth is that I have liked it very much. Thank you for your advice. I like it also in "Il Trovatore" I Believe that the voice of Del Monaco is perfect for " L`anima ho stanca " Adriana Lecouvreur. For me is the best in this aria. About the older tenors I prefer don't talk about them. The quality of the recordings is too bad to be able to do a valuation.
Domingo once said "If there is such thing as reincarnation, I wish to be reborn as Michael Bolton". He last wish is to be buried with a signed copy Michael Boltons "My secret passion" cd. Go Domingo!
Listening to how effortless Domingo makes this sound, one would never know just how hideously difficult this aria can be. From "O dolce bacio..." the tessitura is a killer.
The guy is a master of technique. He must be, look at how well he is singing in his late 60's.
well i dont really know but, i think most of the song and including the chorus part, is sang in Fa, always or most in Fa of mol, and even the higher notes...well i dontreally know, im not a music teacher haahha, what do youu think youtubers?, thanks!
just beautiful domingo sings this aria with passion and a magnificent voice bravo!

I was at this concert back in 1997 and yes Domingo was excellent. I would also recommend Bergonzi or di Stefano recordings of this aria.

Do you know how many operas he knows by heart? The score is a prompt. Has your mind ever gone blank of a sudden?
Placido is the best - the softest and most dramatic of any living tenor, though he has a great pupil!

How many times would Domingo have sung this aria? I think he should know the words by heart, shouldn't he?
