This is too sad to watch from a former Catalina Lifeguard in 1964, and a folk singer on the :wall: passing the hat.. I only watched a few minutes until it hurt so bad...I watched that steamer every day from January 1963 until Labor Day 1963 when I moved off the Island...RIP ..A Noble ship with a Noble History..
I'm sorry to say, she's entirely gone. Nothing remaining above the water to ever let anyone know she was ever there. Went to Ensenada last year, she's been scrapped.
How sad......I went with both of my parents to Catalina on this ship when I was 13 in 1966.......
Those were the days......The trip started in San Pedro, ( Los Angeles Harbor ) and it took 2 hours to cover the 26 miles to Avalon......Sierra Cuban, Miami, Florida
omg my falily in the past rode that little ship so much it was like our personal family boat-but-it is now sitting in a place that no one in the city doesnt really give a crap about it and they will just let it rot away--they gotta do something 2 get my favorite ''family'' boat back
This makes me sad. I know all things must pass ...but we do manage to preserve works of art and other monuments. too bad this had to happen.I think many people want to keep their happy, care-free summer memories intact and this is just hard to swallow. I too almost wish I hadn't seen this.
When I read about this ship in GREAT SHIP DISASTERS, I had quite an interest. Then we went to Ensenada on our 4 day Mexican Baja cruise on Carnival Cruises Paradise and I actually got to see it. I'd love to go on her deck. Her funnel is still intact, she could definatly be saved. But I think it might be Ensenada (laws or something) holding her back. I saw a special on KOCE that described her, wishing she was back. I wouldn't mind sailing her to Catalina myself!
OH MY GOD! I had no idea she looked that bad! Almost wish I didn't see this. I have pictures and 8mm film of her when she was in operation. This ship must be saved!! What is the matter with people. How the hell did we let this happen?

Sadly scrapping has already begun last week. The poor old ss Catalina will be gone within a month.

It's over 300 feet long. Mother nature has claimed too much of that. Preserve the history, but this metal is barnacle food.

I sailed on her when I was 3 years old. It would be really nice to see her restored and looking beautiful again. What a shame the state shes in now.
