  • Is the rest of the show uploaded here somewhere? I would love to see what that fellow at the end is about to do.

  • Is that standard tuning?

  • Probably my fave song ever, followed closely by Arthur McBride and Lakes of Pontchartain.

  • So bad ass.

  • i reckon he plays BETTER on balcony t.v he dont pick it there his touch is so confident and sure

  • GOD I love this song!

  • This is such a masterpiece. Brilliant playing from both of them; Brady's voice is so effortless... It all just gives me chills.

  • savage playing, lovely voice...but the glasses.

    Should've gone to spec savers!

    ...

  • Paul Brady and Andy Irvine at their very best! Nobody can touch them!

  • Did he ever do Four Green Fields ?

  • This is very good....but I must admit I have a soft spot for Bob Dylans version

  • This is a Child ballad, right? The Trooper and the Maid?

  • Anyone here who knows what key and type of harmonica Andy is playing here??

  • @Holm182 the guitar is in open g so i think just a g harmonica should work

  • @rossbj138 nope - its in A flat (or else my electroinic tuner is a semitone off)

  • @echoceleste cheers dude

  • @Holm182 G sharp or a flat.

  • legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In my opinion, the finest folk singer this country has ever produced. The power and sincerity he puts into every flicker of the voice just astounds me every time... The album he did with andy has to be one of the best i've been priviliged to listen to.

  • FROM THE MIND OF GOD TO HIS LIPS

  • My fave of the Paul Brady YouTube collection

  • Three members of Planty came and played in Hull 42 years ago (!) and I saw them. The music has enchanted me ever since.

  • They sound just as good live as on the album

  • wat a legend

  • The lads can certainly play. Paul's voice is mesmerizing, I can listen over and over and over...

  • Cool, didn't hear this before. Paul Brady's brill

  • he looks so relaxed singing like as if it was effortless

  • damn. yet another paul brady i cant stop listening to.

  • paul brady tune that is.

  • I. first met Sweeneys Men in 1966.

    I. was a young apprentice at Paddy O Callaghans garage in Killorglin. One Puck Fair morning we found a red VW van parked in the yard. I. later learned that this was a group called Sweeneys men .they were booked to play at The Railway Hotel I went along and became a fan. Andy, Johnie and Joe were the members then later andy went to Romania so Terry Woods joined. . Just last year I learned of the death of Joe a great loss to folk and ballad. RIP.

  • is he playin the harmonica upside down?

  • absoloootly fantastic!!!!! .. search Bob Dylan version .. a friggin joke ..

  • You are quite right in what you say. However, I don't think that Paul would sing a Dylan song as well as Dylan. Nor did Dylan sing "The Boxer" as well as Simon and Garfunkel.

  • How did Andy Irvine ever become so awesome?

  • wow!!! why did paul brady change his style so much since this ?

  • beautiful song...very sad though! Typical Irish lyrics, love, loyalty, death...

  • Kevin Burke appears in the last second of the clip... Anyone knows if that clip is available..?

  • @noruga hi noruga, the young Kevin Burke clip is from the Bothy Band - Live at the Embankment, Dun Laoighaire ( I think ) - possibly The Green Groves of Eireann - their on youtube - all brilliant stuff. Have fun searching!

  • ach. when he smiled my heart beat twice in the space of one.

  • This is just a guess, but id imagine its from the north

  • Andy's playin' that harp upsidedown!

    Great, great performance..

  • Yeah he always plays it upside down and blows when you should suck and sucks when you should blow. So he says himself anyway!!!

  • He must be "left mouthed"! lol

  • Anybody got any clues as to the provenance of this song? It's been sung by many performers over the years (latterly by Bob Dylan I notice). I have looked to see who colelcted it etc. but have only drawn blanks.

    Thanks

  • its even better with a whistle in place of the mouth organ.

  • Comment removed

  • One of my true favorites as well. If you like this, then get The Liberty Tapes cd from Compass Records. It's a live 1978 concert from this time period. SO good!!! The tapes were lost for 25 years. When found, they sound so great. A must have.

  • A proper guitar tablature for this song does not seem to exist on the interweb; only the simplified chords for the Dylan version. What a shame.

  • And from where do you think Paul got the tab in the 1st place ? From his mind. Why ? Simply because he *is* a musician...

  • No shit sherlock!

I think you missed my point - it is a shame more attention hasn't been paid to Bradys guitar style.

  • OK, I missed your point. Sorry.

There are so many people whining 'where are the tabs", "give me the notes", just because they are too lazy to open their ears and learn to use them...

  • This stuff isn't easy. There is a lot going on here. Hybrid picking, alternate tuning, a lot of sustained chords on the ways up, not to mention distinguishing Andy from Paul at times. I wish someone would come along and break this down. I can play my own version but that doesn't help my technique like a case study would.

  • Paul Brady could sing the telephone directories and make them sound interesting

  • I love how this song floats along. I can listen to it over & over.

  • Yes! two legend musician's producing a classic recording of a great song. Every time I hear this it brings a smile to my face and my head goes from side to side in disbelief, got to get out my new 00015 Martin to try it out in my humble way! Humble smile.

  • かわいい曲です。複雑なコードフォームに最初びっくりしましたが、3コードらしい・・・。ポール・ブレイディさんの凄いギターテクと神々しい歌声が合わさった傑作だと思います。

  • Two Legends of Irish music at its best ! Wonderful song, great arrangement. No words can describe the perfect work and feeling for this song played by this genious musicians.

  • first class sir great artist nice player

  • Good song!

  • by the way, i got my mom to watch this, and she was so concentrated on finding out why his hair " looked like that" than the beauty and awesome of his talent + voice. psh. :[

  • anybody know where i can download this for free?

  • You can download it onto your pc with realplayer which is free to download too. I think then you can copy it to a disc ect.

  • What make and model of guitar is this ?

    thanks,

    Murlach

  • Its a Yamaha FG(Folk Guitar)180. One of the good'uns. Made in Japan.

  • yqamaha f series

  • marvellous rendition ........even beats Old blind dogs version

  • best thing ever on you tube.....without a doubt..awesome.paul is amazing.andy is without pier

  • been listening to this song for 15 years now, absolutely love it, didn't know there was video to it, Brady is such a nigel though

  • paul is a nigel?.....ha i dont think so, i know his cousin who's just like him...and theyre both misunderstood, moody gits but talented as can be...what a song

  • an example of folk perfection. i love his subtle passion, very sedate

  • Real music from real musicians. A joy to behold!

  • I've been listening this song as an instrumental

for almost 20 years from the Scott Nygaard's 1st solo record 'no hurry". That's great to hear where he got the original version to make his own which is fantastic!

  • I've loved their recording of this since I first heard it back in the '80s, but this is the first time I've ever seen them play it. I owe you a pint for posting it. "At last I've found my treasure". Indeed!

  • Andy Irvine and Paul Brady, the eponymous album.

  • Good to see and hear such great talent

  • Paul Brady's best interpretation of a traditional song. In fact, I can't think of a better one by anybody. A desert island disc.

  • I like the way Andly is playing that harp. Looks upside to the way I play mine.

  • Apparently he learnt to play it upside down because of the influence of Woody Guthrie, who also played it like that.

  • Andy Irvine does a great job of recreating the instrumental break on his harmonica! Great song.

  • Five stars, TEN stars if I could give it.

  • Hear Paul sing The Coleraine Regetta, brilliant.

  • I have this tune on CD, it's great to see it played. I've listened to this and sug it with my family for years.

Except I think the harmonica was an accordion.

Awesome tune. Go raibh maith agat.

  • What key/tuning is paul Brady playing

  • He's using DGDGBD = Open G tunning With the capo on the 1st fret for this song. so it's in G sharp

  • Thanks Man been tryin to work that out for ages. Fair play to ya!

  • great song - great performance - I wish it was fol. revival time again

  • It's from the same program sessions from the 70's

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Micromaid! It's brilliant to see this again. I haven't seen this in years. Do You have Andy Irvine backing David McWilliams singing Lay It on the Line or David McWilliams singing Twenty Golden Years Ago?

    Thanks For your Clip

  • This is still so fresh..It's a pity and a wonder that there wasn't a lot more collaborration bewteen these musicians considering Brady was such an innovative and original guitar player at the time. Andy went on to play with a lot less competent guitar players in my opinion. On the video it looks like Andy is playing the harmonica upsidedown as when he moves left as he plays the notes increase in pitch. Anybody an ideas!?.

  • Hi Courtmacsherry

now i am fascinated? My name is Tony O' Neill and I come from Courtmacsherry and wonder who the devil is watching with me video's of Andy Irvine on You Tube?

I visit quite regular and watch my old mates the herons on Timoleague bridge so let us know

What a great track brings the memories back.

  • Hi radiotarifa

Firstly I suppose I am a musician who marvels at this music and its brilliant musicianship and try to copy it myself. Secondly I live in Wexford but was Cork city born as a child and my grandparents roots on both sides are west Cork, Ballinacarriga/Dunmanway My grandfather worked on the old narrow gauge trains that went from Bandon though Timoleague I guess and out to Courtmacsherry. Terrible weather but great for drinking porter. Regards to you Tony where are you based?

  • Hello Courtmachsherry

Looking at this video brings back my youth living in England but being knocked over by musicians like this guy and the interpretation of traditional Irish music!

Lot older now but this stuff stills knocks me over.

I am based in the UK but travel a great deal, Wexford hmmmm whats it like trying to make a living in booming Ireland? I come to Ireland a great deal as my company I run has two large customers in Dublin

  • Hi Tony "terrible weather but great for drinkin' pints". This confusing quote in my last correspondence refers to last New Year's Eve when my family had a reunion which lasted four days and took place mostly in The Anchor Bar in Courtmacsherry due to Atlantic storms. We didn't complain that much. Think I have the right pub name the one closest to the old school on the shore. Regards to you.

  • Anchor Bar run by Billy Fleming my very old good friend went to school with him

Well four days in a pub is what I call a reunion!

Too old for that now but if you speak to Billy next time he will remember fond days "Tipping it up to Nancy"

    Autumn here too very lovely

  • I love the life boat myself. God bless and take care lads

  • Andy plays harmonica in the 'W Guthrie' style, turning it the other way around - he explains it all on his web site

  • Thanks festnoz10 ..I will look it up. I saw Andy recently in Carrig on Bannow Wexford with The Wise Family. A lot of good harmonica that night.

  • I think you're right about the harmonica

  • wonderful song.very nice versions of this song are sung by : LUCY KAPLANSKY and EDDI READER and BRIAN McNEILL

  • - LUCY KAPLANSKY : 5/5

    - EDDI READER : 3/5

    - BRIAN McNEILL : 3/5

  • Superb to see this. I am glad I was `switched on` to Irish Music as a teenager born in Birmingham of Irish parenst

  • hahah same here im 14 and i love irish music but i still like rock n thrash metal

  • fair play to you! The music scene in B'ham in the mid/late 80's was ABSOLUTELY ACE !! (Kevin Crawford / Joe Molloy / Ivan Miletitch / Mick Connelly / Brendan Boyle and many, many more !!! & the pubs in Digbeth were VERY accomodating!

  • Yes, you meant "The Long Acre" band...

  • absolutely brilliant

  • an amazing song; well done.

  • smacclutch, in all due respect, I differ. This is way better because unlike the Liberty Tapes, Paul and Andy are here to SEE as they play that gorgeous stuff.

May YouTube live forever. This is amazing stuff being uploaded.

Anyone else notice that Andy plays harp upside down? Bass notes on his right, higher ones on his left.

  • this is terrific, but Paul and Andy's version of this on The Liberty Tapes is even better. this version is a little fast for me.

  • please don't ever take this off, its amazing

  • do u have more of sessions from the seventies i think i recognize kevin burke after the clip

  • wow

  • a rare treat everybody deserves to see this work of magic

  • great stuff!

  • Andy & Paul....one of the best dou-work ever

  • YouTube is fantastic, where else would you get footage like this from 1977. I wonder does anyone have Paul singing Arthur McBride from the same era? It would be great to see.

  • I presume by now you've found the multiple versions from different years (3.5 at last count) right here on YouTube.

  • Great video, thanks. I could listen to the voices of Andy and Paul all day long (not to mention their gorgeous musicianship!)

Paul looks about 12 in this clip-lol!

  • Effortlessly and beautiful... from my favourite album of all time.

  • Er....em.... I think you mean Paul's Guitar work & beautiful voice + Andy's intricate work on Mandolin?

  • great clip, thankyou, really enjoyed the intricacy of andy's guitar work behind paul's beautiful voice.

  • I second that! One of my favorite songs and duos ever. So together, what a blend were Paul and Andy!

  • Please don't remove this video! I love it so and listen to it at least once or twice a day. It is such a pleasure to see this little clip.
