Bishop Ashe belongs to the Syrian orthodox church, that has a history much longer than the Roman catholic Church. If I am not mistaken ( I am sure I am not) but the Syrian orthodox church has ties to another orthodox church in India that is believed to have been founded but Thomas the apostle ( doubting Thomas as most of us know him by).
