@Liberaliter Do you have any idea that there are natrually redheasds and blondes in northern middle east (iraq, lebanon, palestine, syria, and some north african countries)??
Ancient Chinese invented paper and a beer-like substance called Kui. Ancient Egyptians invented sails along the Nile River. Historians do not know who or when mankind invented the first calendar, probably early man when he first carved a notch into a stick or a bone which marked the passing of each full moon.
Notched bones used to record moon phases have been found in Africa and Europe dating back to about 20,500 BC.

okay, not all arabs are muslims. But islam is not a peaceful religion. The Quran has many verses of hate against others. And to prove it, there is a whole chapter agains the jewish, chrisitans and kaffirs:
Verses written for a time when the newly formed religion was seen as a huge threat by jewish and christian kingdoms, who wanted to rub it out immediately.
Besides, we dont all follow what the book says word to word, you know =)
how ignorant of u..spreadign ur viscious lies and fear i order to achieve ur own evil goals of division and hate. U can bring any line out of context even from the Torah and bible and u will find the same hate there also...go watch '1001 inventions' and thank muslims for ur coffee,perfumes,pens,clocks,3 course meals, crystals and so on so on!!Dont blame Islam for ur own misfortunes.
why did that dude in the video say "i wanna have people say positive things like 'i like the fact that you invented calender, ...paper...'" i thought chinese did the paper job, no?
Arabic culture contributed all of those things... loooooong ago... it's not that we don't think Arabic culture has contributed anything... it's that we want it to stop all of the negativity it currently perpetrates... and this doesn't mean start pointing out things America does wrong in response... that does not solve anything and there is a time to discuss America's mistakes ... but not as a way to deflect legitimate criticism about contemporary Arabic practices
Ok, VERY cute and understandable Queen Rania, but nearly all the things they referenced as being that which they wish they heard from people are ANCIENT achievements! The calendar, beer, contributions to mathematics...
There is probably a lot of good that could come and perhaps even does come from contemporary Arab culture... but there is indisputably a lot of bad as well... and that doesn't mean a response to my pointing this out is to note what America does wrong... Arabs must improve too
i liked your comment in that you were trying to be sensible, diplomatic and not hateful. you seem to be trying to have a civilised ernest discussion. now my question is, what did you mean by arabs need to improve? how? people have done some messed up stuff, but what do i, as an arab, or my neighbours and family have to do? what can you ask me to do? much like, what can i ask you to do about the high homicide rates in the US, for example?
First, I think we need to confirm (or disconfirm) the notion that Arabs need to "improve" in some way.
When I speak of improve, I'm referring to a very broad, cultural-level set of changes... similar perhaps to the European Enlightenment.
However, this assumes that Arabs actually WANT to improve the state of their culture... if we measure Arab culture by Western values, than they do need to modernize or improve, but (cont)
if judged by other standards, this may not be the case... to say that the middle east needs to advance or modernize could just be euphemisms advocating westernization...however, if the Arab people are generally dissatisfied with their current governmental, economic and cultural state, then it does seem to imply that change and improvement must be made... it is largely up to all of you to determine in what way this will take place, and to implement it. What is not productive (cont)

Regarding the homicide rate in the US... I don't believe this is a parallel comparison, as by improving I'm referring to a broad, culture-wide set of changes instead of a specific issue (such as homicide rate)... it is natural for people to respond to what they perceive as criticism with returned criticism, but that never accomplishes anything as improvement of any type requires taking ownership of a problem, rather than deflecting / ignoring it by pointing out a problem in return
that was too cool I had to post it on myspace page...insha'Allah, the owner doesn't mind that I did that. It was too real and funny not to share. Subhan'Allah.
1:02 and 1:06 ...I couldn't stop laughing! oh my gosh I love this video and being Cuban myself, I can relate to the feling because people always ask me about Fidel like he's my uncle or something! LOL...like no, I don't have his phone number, alright! LM@O. =)
As an American, just listening to these comments...It's plain ignorance, and uneducated people speaking on what they assume. People fear what they don't know and don't understand but won't take the time to educate themselves.
LMAO @ 1:15- 1:20 "How many terrorist are there?" I said 83 hahaha
Problem is that people judge other people by their heritage and their appearance. And often enough we do so ourselves, if we are traditionalists. But mostly we aren't traditionalists, our sense of aesthetics when we acquire it can turn us into progressives.
I have Palestinian ancestry by the way, even though I don't approve of a Palestinian state. A lot people think I am Jewish, because I support Israel and are dumbfounded when I tell them I am half Russian and Palestinian (Both Christian).
Yeah, when I think of the role of Arabs in history, mostly I think of the great strides you make in science and recovering/gathering texts from all over that were otherwise lost because of my ancestors. Rather glad you guys did that. Awesome science guys and numbers. And hummus. And cool music. The number '0' which is rather important. BTW, the Mayans had rather good calenders, though their civilisation was wiped out by us Europeans so...
When people think of Arabs, they think of those who have made an actual stamp onto history and onto our pop-culture like Osama Bin Laden.
We then create stereotypes and then classify those people by those stereotypes unaware that they are humans as likely to be as different in their society as we are.
Not everyone is a traditionalist. There are lots of non-traditionalist Iranians, Egyptians, Turks, Albanians, Chechens, and Pakistanis. LOTS! MILLIONS!
I think a lot of these misconceptions carry over not only to those of Middle Eastern or Arab descent, but South Asia as well...at least, in my experience here in the US, people see my brown skin of find out that I'm Indian and I get a lot of similar ignorant questions. The lack of awareness of world culture is really apalling!
It sucks when the lack of real interest in the subject adds up with whatever the TV is teaching them, resulting in some really funny questions or perceptions of the subject.
And how should that come??? Your religion doens't tolerate other religions, and your not moderated to fit in a welfared country! Almost 90% act like parasites and live on the back of the western citizen! and believe me I can go on and on, and on...!!!
"Islam" our religion is a religion of peace and tolerance among people. Before you can make a biased judgement like this I encourage you to read about Islam. Take the Lebanese government, it is made up of christians, druis, muslims, catholics that have united respectfully. "Kingdom of Heaven" is a clear sign of how Salah il deen was respectful to christians. There is a mutual relationship btwn west and east, Since the USA is bigger than most of the middle east you benefit most from our oil.
@TheFckedup You know back in 2002, the Aussie team 'the chaser' went to a U.S. town and asked questions like "Name a country starting with U." "How many sides does a triangle have?"
With the questions you've been asked, ask them "How many sides does a triangle have?" they won't get the joke though.
@libyangalo Actually no. The numerals Indians created were passed on to the Arabs through translation in the House of Wisdom where Arabs took that information, simplified it, added more to it, and created the number 0. Take an Arabic Culture class in university, it is very interesting what you will learn in there, I am serious.
yes you are right its indian, passed to persian and than to arabs. the decimal system is indian. the arabic contibution is fraction system developed in syria by Abu'l-Hasan al-Uqlidisi
its a shame because every race or culture or new grou of people have to go through these sorts of things when the world is open to them. such as black people in the 50's. if you did this now to black peple you woould get arrested
I am Mexican. So next time I meet someone from Iran I will say . . . My neice thinks I look like the goalie on Iran's soccer team. Are you into soccer?
btw, his name is Ebrahim Mirzapour and I think it's quite a compliment to be compared to him
Muslims are well known to exaggerate and/or makeup things to show themselves as victims of racism. Knowing Muslims and how they act, I seriously doubt if these comments were actually made.
@WiseNegator You would be surprised. Even Christian Arabs get asked similar questions as soon as they say they're from the Middle East. Some people in the world are just a little ignorant. Mais c'est la vie
I'd like to hear *how* you told people that your of Middle Eastern background. If it came out of the blue, awkward to the conversation, that would explain how you got awkward and smart-mouthed comments. That's to be expected. If you told in a more natural conversational way and still got those responses, then I'd shake my head in disgust. Not to say that many people aren't heinously prejudice, too many are. I hear some much worse comments behind your back. The situation is very sad.
Ahoy Middle Eastern peeps! Thanks for being beautiful and having an interesting culture. Thank you for putting family first. Thank you for yoiur contribution to science and medicine. Thank you for arab leaders that have much to say about our world. Thanks for makin me smile.
Thank you to all of the Middle Eastern people for being beautiful! We're all family. Please excuse our rude American brothers and sisters. They are really scared and stressed out over time and money. Blame the TV!
I never knew that the Middle East was the first place that used paper and ink. Fun fact.
Aaahhh..the ignorance people have when it comes to arabs or the middle-east..
I can still remember the look on some people's faces back home when I tell them I am arab...but you look so modern to be an arab...and you have like...euh...a small nose...
poor people!!! lol.. BUT C´mon!!! this happens TO ALL people everywhere!!!! one time one guy tought Mexico was next to cambodia!!!!! --don´t take it personal!!!!!! RELAX!!!!
Muslims are looked at with suspicion and lack of trust by rest of the world. They need to reform themselves and learn about human rights, democracy and secularism and take these principles to Islamic countries.
That is not true, you can not make such a huge claim. Not everyone in the world is IGNORANT and lacks education. People who know what the word " Islam" means know that Islam calls for peace, and human rights and all the wonderful things we all humans call for. What people need to know is proper geography and perhaps to read more about other religions and culture.
I have always believed everyone has something to teach us. We must be aware of it. To learn of another's culture is to learn more about ourselves. Honor and respect is, I fear, is a forgotten art. I choose to walk in the light of understanding.
No, Coffee was first discovered in Yemen long before tribal immigration to Ethiopia from Yemen and Oman which made them a semitic people. Paper was first used in Egypt and I don't know about beer.
The oldest evidence of Beer made on a scientific basis is found to be in Iran and Mesopotamia. By inventing beer he meant the process, not the domestic accidental stuff that was kept a secret.
Coffee?! Thank you Arabs!
Actually the word coffee itself comes from the Arabic word قهوة !

okay, not all arabs are muslims. But islam is not a peaceful religion. The Quran has many verses of hate against others. And to prove it, there is a whole chapter agains the jewish, chrisitans and kaffirs:
"At-Tawbah"

Verses written for a time when the newly formed religion was seen as a huge threat by jewish and christian kingdoms, who wanted to rub it out immediately.
Besides, we dont all follow what the book says word to word, you know =)

Arabs must improve too
RobH081 1 year ago 3
hey rob,
i liked your comment in that you were trying to be sensible, diplomatic and not hateful. you seem to be trying to have a civilised ernest discussion. now my question is, what did you mean by arabs need to improve? how? people have done some messed up stuff, but what do i, as an arab, or my neighbours and family have to do? what can you ask me to do? much like, what can i ask you to do about the high homicide rates in the US, for example?
best regards
nokian93E50 1 year ago 4
@nokian93E50
Hi Nokian...that is an interesting question.
RobH081 1 year ago
@nokian93E50
if judged by other standards, this may not be the case... to say that the middle east needs to advance or modernize could just be euphemisms advocating westernization...however, if the Arab people are generally dissatisfied with their current governmental, economic and cultural state, then it does seem to imply that change and improvement must be made... it is largely up to all of you to determine in what way this will take place, and to implement it. What is not productive (cont)

@RobH081

Tom101229 2 years ago
Yeah, when I think of the role of Arabs in history, mostly I think of the great strides you make in science and recovering/gathering texts from all over that were otherwise lost because of my ancestors. Rather glad you guys did that. Awesome science guys and numbers. And hummus. And cool music. The number '0' which is rather important. BTW, the Mayans had rather good calenders, though their civilisation was wiped out by us Europeans so...
NethDugan 2 years ago 3
When people think of Arabs, they think of those who have made an actual stamp onto history and onto our pop-culture like Osama Bin Laden.
We then create stereotypes and then classify those people by those stereotypes unaware that they are humans as likely to be as different in their society as we are.
Not everyone is a traditionalist. There are lots of non-traditionalist Iranians, Egyptians, Turks, Albanians, Chechens, and Pakistanis. LOTS! MILLIONS!
But we live in a stereotypical world.

With the questions you've been asked, ask them "How many sides does a triangle have?" they won't get the joke though.

libyangalo 2 years ago
@libyangalo Actually no. The numerals Indians created were passed on to the Arabs through translation in the House of Wisdom where Arabs took that information, simplified it, added more to it, and created the number 0. Take an Arabic Culture class in university, it is very interesting what you will learn in there, I am serious.

Muslims are looked at with suspicion and lack of trust by rest of the world. They need to reform themselves and learn about human rights, democracy and secularism and take these principles to Islamic countries.
PainfulDog 2 years ago
That is not true, you can not make such a huge claim. Not everyone in the world is IGNORANT and lacks education. People who know what the word " Islam" means know that Islam calls for peace, and human rights and all the wonderful things we all humans call for. What people need to know is proper geography and perhaps to read more about other religions and culture.
hizawov 2 years ago 6
I have always believed everyone has something to teach us. We must be aware of it. To learn of another's culture is to learn more about ourselves. Honor and respect is, I fear, is a forgotten art. I choose to walk in the light of understanding.
