Not all Chinese people had a male-preference. Male-preference was primarily because in Chinese ancestor worship, only a son can perform ritual duties for his parents.

I love Mulan, because she doesn't follow the norms society has placed on women.  She thinks for herself and does what she believes is right. She fixed the mold Disney made with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White. I really love Mulan as well though she's really not a new idea. The Disney Princesses got a bit more spirited way back with Ariel and Belle and Jasmine. Mulan is unique though because she's not a royal princess, either by birth or by matchup.

Ariel puts her whole civilization at risk just to get a bloke, and Jasmine HAS to play the role of 'damsel in distress' because Aladdin has to swoop in and save her. Belle is the only other who can really compete, because she performs a similar act of self-sacrifice for a family member.
