@jordtizzle sorry man I got hammered with a copyright for the audio, I gotta do a swap but theres another one uploaded on my channel same vid, different audio
I just put my 2nd coat of gloss black on today with a roller. Didn't thin it at all. How long did you wait to start polishing after your last coat? Nice work by the way.
my dad bought some turtlewax rubbing compound for 2.99 and i wanted the meguires but he said its the same thing . do u know what the differnce is between the 2 compunds? thanks alot
@wrstrpker No 2 compounds are the same. They all have different abrasive characteristics. I tried alot of different ones and had to learn that fact the hard way. Meguiars is good because is minimally abrasive....to get the scratches out it takes a while. I would rather use one that takes alot of polishing than one that cuts too fast, which would be more likely to damage paint by user error
One more question mike. When you wet sand after the 2nd coat how much orange peel should I remove? and the 4th coat? I would imagine 100% of the orange peel should be removed after the final 6th coat.
@djrepete Think of it like this...each time you wetsand, your goal is to level that paint nice and flat. Go easy with the wetsanding pressure, keep checking your work. I use a squeegie to pull the water off quick because I like wetsanding with a running garden hose. Lay your coats nice and thin with the paint mixed just right, and the orange peel will be minimal. I tried for 100% removal of all orange peel, I came pretty close. The flatter the paint....the better reflection, mirrors are flat :)
I put on my first thin coat of gloss black and its uneven. Some parts are black and others are not. Is this normal and what coat should it look like its coming together?
hey i got a ???? i rolling on white rusto on my 96 civic, i put on about 3 coats now, sanded every 2 , how much would you thin the paint on the 4-6 coats???? i jjust wetsandewd 600 grit so far any pointers (i have all the time i need to do this), sooo i want to make it right
@joshkilla67 I thin it until when mixing the paint with a drill, the bubbles in the paint dissapear withing 2-3 seconds after stopping the drill. Try it you'll see what I mean, use non thinned paint, mix it with a drill and a wisk, watch the bubbles, millions of them and they don't go away. Now add clear mineral spirits, and mix, keep checking when you have added enough spirits, the bubbles dissapear withing 2-3 seconds, PERFECT
LMAO! something a hillbilly with no skills would do. why dont you grab a spray gun and spray some quality clear that will shine like new for 15 years or more? i find it funny u sanded your every coat of the 6 you put on with your roller! LMAO! hick!
i seriously don't know how you got a finish like this. i've sanded and wet sanded between coats, making it smooth, painted my 50/50 mix on top of it and it still looks like a rolled on paint.
i seriously don't know how you got a finish like this. i've sanded and wet sanded between coats, making it smooth, painted my 50/50 mix on top of it. it shines for a minute then goes completely dull. how do you get such a reflection that it's like your looking in the mirror. i have literally tried everything. it still looks like i just painted it on with regular paint. you must have gotten this done professionally. there's no way this paint can have a mirror shine like that.
@jschristian44 why dont you take some pictures or a video so I can see the paint, thats the easiest way for me to help you out. Tell you what, I'll try to put together a video of me actually rolling the paint on so you can see exactly what I do, and there is a way to make it shinelike mine, just do exactly what I did...and it will
i'll be honest with ya mike. I was ready to just give my car to maaco but i saw your video and decided to give it one more go. picked up a yellow foam pad from harbor tools ($6.99) and went at it. 3 mins later its like a mirror. I really didnt believe a little yellow foam pad could do much but WOW. This is the way to do it, hands down. You're awesome. i'll take some pictures when im completely finished with the car but if anyone is reading this. The key is the yellow foam pad. no question.thanks
@UberPengwin sweet cant wait to check it out, yeah the yellow pad works awesome, its easy to give up, but after you put in the work, you get to sit back and smile :)
i just returned the random orbit and picked up a sander/polisher just like yours, only thing is it doesnt come with that yellow polish pad. where did you get that thing from? harbor freight too?
@UberPengwin usually theres a auto parts store in every town that supplies the auto body businesses with different pads. Shouldn't be hard to find at all, I bought the yellow foam, and the white finishing foam pads
hi, i've got one of these (Craftsman 7 in. Buffer/Polisher ) and i can put bonnets on it. i've tried the terry-cloth and the results are less the spectacular. you have any suggestions on how I can my black rustoleum to shine? am i using the right bonnet? im using meguires ultimate too.
@UberPengwin nah get rid of the terry cloth and get a yellow foam, or white foam finishing pad, you have the rotary polisher? or a random orbital polisher?
@Mikeandwendy74 random orbit. i cant post hyperlinks but google "Craftsman 7-in buffer". it uses bonnets, the only ones I can find for it are wool, synthetic and terry cloth. you think a drill attachment might work?
@UberPengwin the random orbit wont do the job the same way, its not as aggressive, for around 25-30 bucks, get yourself a variable speed rotary polisher, its worth it, if you take 1 panel, paint it etc, wetsand, when your ready to polish you go from no shine to mirror in 10 minutes flat
@Mikeandwendy74 will do, i found out there are harbor freight stores in my area, if i knew i would have gotten one of their $30 sander/polishers. the craftsman is goin back to sears.
@trex65ghia I have polished panels withing 2 days of the final paint coat, no at this point there was no clear coat used at all, it was the polish and the gloss from the gloss black that gave it what you see in the vide no clear coat
@lescooke82 yes I bought a variable speed rotary buffer from harbor freight tools for 30 bucks, some ultimate compound, and used the white fine polishing pad. I would rather take longer with that pad, than use a wool pad quick and run the risk of paint damage. Wetsand to 2000 grit, smooth as glass, polish..nice nice :)
@Mikeandwendy74 cool beans,im doing the same to my import van,use some meguiars machine glaze after the ulitimate compound,it comes out breath takingly deep glass like, give it shot you will be even more amazed ;)
@vfIskullangel I I simply polished out the paint after wetsanding with 2000 grit, when I was done I used some good wax and it still looks the same 1 year later
well im unemployed, ive got a 96 mustang with 325k km on it, its been driven in winter and it just got some pretty bad wind blown sand damage... i guess ill have at it then hahaha... im thinking 8 coats and maybe a couple stripes later...
Any chance you could post a walk-around video of the finished truck? The section you have worked on in this vid looks incredible, I would love to see the finished product. I'm about to start rolling on my 85 C10.
@barkinloudpipes sure ill post something, but i am messing with some clear coat right now, debating if i should do the whole truck with it, btw it still looks like this and its about a year later
its real easy to do just have patience, this will take a good 4 days to get where my truck is in this vid. If you have patience, it will look like a mirror
I used nothing to prime the truck where it was painted previously. I cleaned, then scratched the old paint with 320 and started the first coat, it grabbed perfect
after the last coat, I wetsand with 1500, then 2000grit, I dont use buffing compound, I go straight to polishing compound with a finish pad on the buffer. The 2000 grit scratches polish out to a mirror
mike i was bored and finally tried my $56 electric wagner double duty HVLP fine finish sprayer on some old fenders just to see what kind of result i could get. did one fender with rustoleum and the other with house of kolors black urethane. both came out pretty good considering i sprayed in 35 degree temps which is unheard of lol. i did have a small run in the 1st panel cause i wasnt used to the gun. if i ever get a camera i'll upload some videos.
hey mike wat a result man.. im wondering about the mixture, was like 60% rustoleum and 40%paint thinner? this is the best results by far compare to the ones i saw.. good vid man
Want an easy way to mix it? here it is :) Go buy a 1 gallon paint mixing container for a buck at a hardware store(with a cover), buy a large metal wisk. Wisk in end of drill. Paint goes in bucket, then thinner, run drill on high speed while adding thinner.(MILLIONS of air bubbles but when its mixed just right they dissapear immediately when you stop the drill) :) Hope this helps.
I've done the rustoleum before and had a mirror finish but i couldnt find anyone on here who tried the roller with urethane car paint , so i guess i'll be the first. i'll keep experimenting with reducer, hardener and paint mix ratios till it dries bubble free.
My friend just got done painting my car with rustoleum. The same black as this truck, but he sprayed it on. He finished it on Thursday but its cold out where we live at in PA and he said it might take longer to dry. how long should i wait till i wetsand it. Then use miguers compound then Ice wax it?
i would let it dray a couple of days before wetsanding and polishing, 2-3 days i would think. after wetsanding , use the meguiars, and then wash dry and wax done
do you know if Urethane single stage black car paint could be rolled on like this?? if so i'm only guessing I would need to thin the Urethane with a lot of reducer to get it thin enough to roll? i found some urethane at a autobody supply shop for $22 a quart and might roll it like this if you think it would work. great video by the way. truck looks great.
thx yes you could absolutely roll it, thin it with the right stuff for that paint, you'll actually save alot of paint by doing it this way, no paint loss with overspray etc... go for it it will come out good have patience
@ Mike tried to roll a body panel with singlestage gloss black urethane car paint instead of the rustoleum. mixed 2 part paint 1 prt hardener and about 2 prt reducer which is the thinner for urethane. read that rolling with rustoleum causes small bubbles but the bubbles are supposed to pop with the Rustoleum. well guess what. haha the bubbles did not pop with the real urethane car paint. maybe urethane has to be thinned even more than rustoleum I dunno
thats solvent pops , i dont know how the urethane will work out being rolled you might be able to use different hardner speed or slower reducer so it will have more time to flow together before it flashes ive sprayed a lot of it but never rolled it lol
thanks viper. my roller results were as good as Mikes with rustoleum but the urethane experiment just dries way too fast with hardener and super slow reducer for roller application. sounds crazy but this time i'm going to try spraying ureathane through my electric Wagner HVLP control spray fine finish gun. $56 at home depot here. if only i could afford a Sata 3000
i'm experimenting on a old body panel with the gloss black performance enamel. after 2 coats i wetsanded with 800 grit and got it nice and slick and appied a 3rd coat. after the paint dries overnight it seems to have no shine. almost a flat charcoal black. is this normal? guessing it will have to be polished to bring out the real shine? i'll be adding another coat soon and wetsanding again.
you will notice the more coats you put on the less it shines :) after your 4th coat, use 1200 to wetsand, after your 6th coat use 1500, then smooth it with 2000. Then use good polish, I used meguiars ultimate compound. IT WILL BE A MIRROR
man you were right! I put on 4 good coats with a spray can instead of the roller and it seemed to cover in 4 spraying. guess the coats came out a lil thicker. just wetsanded with 1000,1500, and 2000 and polished it with the Meguiars ultimate and the shine is amazing! it looks like it has a clearcoat its so shiny, and its virtually flawless. tomorrow i will use some duragloss car polish and maybe a sealer. i'm so pleased with the result I may do the whole car now. thanks for the great video
one coat today, one coat tomorrow, the next day wetsand, clean and another coat, the next day another coat, the day after wetsand, and coat again so on and so forth
Awesome job man. Since I saw your video, I started this process on a used door I bought to replace the one that got backed into. I've got three coats on so far and have been wetsanding in between coats and it's looking spectacular. I can't wait to see it when I buff it out after a few more coats. Thanks for the great video!
it helps to check your wetsanding if you use a small squeegie to remove the water, any "valleys" in the paint that need to be levelled out will show up as tiny grey spots after wiping the water away.
do you think it would be easier and quicker if i used the rustoleum spray cans or should i just stick with the roller method and about how long should i wait before sanding between coats at a relative temp of 50 degrees here
i dont like the spray cans, too much paint at once, blobby spotty, not my preferred method, 1 coat per day at 50 mix paint and spirits almost 50-50 little more paint than thinner
you should upload a new video so we can see it after the glaze. maybe start the video from like 25 or 30 feet away so we can see the whole truck then walk up on it slowly and do a walk around. impressive
who would have known rustoleum could look so good. this is the best $50 paint i've ever seen. i bet you get lots of compliments at stores and gas stations
thanks man the key is wetsanding. think about a mirror, its perfectly flat yes? if it were not, it would have alot of distortion looking into it. If you wetsand correctly, get it as smooth as glass, then polish, it looks like a mirror, but it takes time and patience.
if you took a clear coat (about 4 to 5 coats over the flat paint and wet sanded it, then buffed it the, gloss would lost a very long time without oxidation build up. But I dont know if the rustoleum is prone to do that
sorry to ask so many questions but what grit sand paper did you use before rolling on the paint? was it 600 or higher? and do i have to let each roller coat dry for 24 hours before applying the next? all of your answers are greatly appreciated. you did a damn fine job.
Hey looks good. How come you abandoned your gray and black two tone combination?

I've done the rustoleum before and had a mirror finish but i couldnt find anyone on here who tried the roller with urethane car paint , so i guess i'll be the first. i'll keep experimenting with reducer, hardener and paint mix ratios till it dries bubble free.

looks awesome, keep it up.

My friend just got done painting my car with rustoleum. The same black as this truck, but he sprayed it on. He finished it on Thursday but its cold out where we live at in PA and he said it might take longer to dry. how long should i wait till i wetsand it. Then use miguers compound then Ice wax it?
nicewitit85 2 years ago
i would let it dray a couple of days before wetsanding and polishing, 2-3 days i would think. after wetsanding , use the meguiars, and then wash dry and wax done

do you know if Urethane single stage black car paint could be rolled on like this?? if so i'm only guessing I would need to thin the Urethane with a lot of reducer to get it thin enough to roll? i found some urethane at a autobody supply shop for $22 a quart and might roll it like this if you think it would work. great video by the way. truck looks great.
JimmmyB100 2 years ago
thx yes you could absolutely roll it, thin it with the right stuff for that paint, you'll actually save alot of paint by doing it this way, no paint loss with overspray etc... go for it it will come out good have patience

JimmmyB100 2 years ago
thats solvent pops , i dont know how the urethane will work out being rolled you might be able to use different hardner speed or slower reducer so it will have more time to flow together before it flashes ive sprayed a lot of it but never rolled it lol

thanks viper. my roller results were as good as Mikes with rustoleum but the urethane experiment just dries way too fast with hardener and super slow reducer for roller application. sounds crazy but this time i'm going to try spraying ureathane through my electric Wagner HVLP control spray fine finish gun. $56 at home depot here. if only i could afford a Sata 3000

go to home depot buy it use it clean it take it back. Keep your receipt. 30 or 90 day return policy.

i'm experimenting on a old body panel with the gloss black performance enamel. after 2 coats i wetsanded with 800 grit and got it nice and slick and appied a 3rd coat. after the paint dries overnight it seems to have no shine. almost a flat charcoal black. is this normal? guessing it will have to be polished to bring out the real shine? i'll be adding another coat soon and wetsanding again.
imadrunkenfooL14 2 years ago
you will notice the more coats you put on the less it shines :) after your 4th coat, use 1200 to wetsand, after your 6th coat use 1500, then smooth it with 2000. Then use good polish, I used meguiars ultimate compound. IT WILL BE A MIRROR
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
man you were right! I put on 4 good coats with a spray can instead of the roller and it seemed to cover in 4 spraying. guess the coats came out a lil thicker. just wetsanded with 1000,1500, and 2000 and polished it with the Meguiars ultimate and the shine is amazing! it looks like it has a clearcoat its so shiny, and its virtually flawless. tomorrow i will use some duragloss car polish and maybe a sealer. i'm so pleased with the result I may do the whole car now. thanks for the great video

thats great, take a vid so we can seeit

This is really impressive!!! I will get the Meguiar's Ulitmate now. Very nice ( I have a bronze Buick park avenue)

if u put on one coat a day do u wetsand it too everyday and if so how long do u wetsand it after u painted it?
nicewitit85 2 years ago
one coat today, one coat tomorrow, the next day wetsand, clean and another coat, the next day another coat, the day after wetsand, and coat again so on and so forth
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
Awesome job man. Since I saw your video, I started this process on a used door I bought to replace the one that got backed into. I've got three coats on so far and have been wetsanding in between coats and it's looking spectacular. I can't wait to see it when I buff it out after a few more coats. Thanks for the great video!
TheBrad1972 2 years ago
it helps to check your wetsanding if you use a small squeegie to remove the water, any "valleys" in the paint that need to be levelled out will show up as tiny grey spots after wiping the water away.
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
do you think it would be easier and quicker if i used the rustoleum spray cans or should i just stick with the roller method and about how long should i wait before sanding between coats at a relative temp of 50 degrees here
JhneMd 2 years ago
i dont like the spray cans, too much paint at once, blobby spotty, not my preferred method, 1 coat per day at 50 mix paint and spirits almost 50-50 little more paint than thinner
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
thanks for your help mike. i'll go with the roller then. have an extra hood for my car that i'll practice on before i do the other one.
JhneMd 2 years ago
you should upload a new video so we can see it after the glaze. maybe start the video from like 25 or 30 feet away so we can see the whole truck then walk up on it slowly and do a walk around. impressive
JhneMd 2 years ago
i can do that, raining today, first nice day I will.
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
think i might repaint the hood and top on my old vet with this seeing your results
JhneMd 2 years ago
who would have known rustoleum could look so good. this is the best $50 paint i've ever seen. i bet you get lots of compliments at stores and gas stations
JhneMd 2 years ago
thanks man the key is wetsanding. think about a mirror, its perfectly flat yes? if it were not, it would have alot of distortion looking into it. If you wetsand correctly, get it as smooth as glass, then polish, it looks like a mirror, but it takes time and patience.
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
if you took a clear coat (about 4 to 5 coats over the flat paint and wet sanded it, then buffed it the, gloss would lost a very long time without oxidation build up. But I dont know if the rustoleum is prone to do that
jerad0683 2 years ago
sorry to ask so many questions but what grit sand paper did you use before rolling on the paint? was it 600 or higher? and do i have to let each roller coat dry for 24 hours before applying the next? all of your answers are greatly appreciated. you did a damn fine job.
imadrunkenfool 2 years ago
looks great. how long will the rustoleum finish last though?
imadrunkenfool 2 years ago
ALONG time if you use a good UV resistant wax, I like the ICE wax you can wax anytime anywhere, sun, shade, hot, cold good stuff
Mikeandwendy74 2 years ago
is the black a deep black or does it look grayish? Looks really nice from the video!!
newelld13 2 years ago
Oh its deep black check the slideshow you'll see the truck just about done, the gloss black looks deep and wet.
