Great tips. About to go for my 'Advanced' ridersafe course in South Australia. We have to do a double u-turn, right then left. Coming into the second u-turn is the hardest part! But fingers crossed with practice it shouldn't be too bad! Thanks for making the vids.
LOL This test is extremely odd. In 15 years of riding I've never did a "Offset Weave" and not many right hand U turns. Though it's a good test to show your skills but I think they should give you more than one chance to do it. I had to re-license when I moved to another state, and failed the offset the first time using a large sport bike. At least they can give you more than one try because none of these test are written in the driver's hand book so how the f*** would you know what to practice?
what do you think of the MSF figure 8 box? i was told it was tighter than the CA dmv circle, when i asked about the trick to the circle and sure enough it is!
@alehax27 I think they test for right hand u-turns because they are harder to do. Still, doing a u-turn in this much space is not difficult. I do 18 ft diameter u-turns on a 2006 Harley Road King.
How about at a rally, Marlo. Or maybe at a gas station. Or maybe just learning the skill will help in other areas of riding. There are no riding skills that I don't wish to improve and master.
I would think it's to the right because it would be to easy of a test to the left. To the right is not a everyday occurance. Say your in a country where they drive on the left hand side of the road. You did your test turning to the right, now you have at least experienced a right u turn, hense your coinfidence in the situation will be high. Increasing your success rate rather than crashing. ok i said to much now.
Nice video but wear protective gear if you gonna do an instruction video or atleast gloves since thats the first thing you put down to save yourself, Im not sure about this counter balance stuff, if you have to counterbalance your dropped the bike too much for the turn, good luck
it is much much harder than it looks... If you've never practiced it there's no way you can do it.
but if you take msf & practice it a couple times every 2 months or so it's not hard at all. It really helped me when I figured out you should put a little bit of pressure on the rear brake
i am in uk and this is brilliant i am gona start my bike courses soon coze i fed up with cars and this guy actualy is giving lessons on utube! thanks a million man
True, rarely will you do a u-turn to the right on a street. (Parking area maybe.) Due to the throttle being on the, a right u-turn is typically more demanding. (Thus some states test the swerve only to the right as well.)
One correction, if you put a foot down in the u-turn, you won't 'FAIL'. You will lose some points.
Gear? 1st (harder for most) 2nd (usually smoother & easier) and is totally up to you.
Practice large. Work small. Keep your head & eyes up!
i took the msf class last weekend, and even though i passed the class, i screwed up the u turns so bad. I tried doing the whole thing in 1st and i kept going outside the box and putting my footdown.
not an excuse surely, 1st is easy keeping your speed down, loads of power if you need it while 2nd on small bikes can sometimes be a problem getting the bike back up due to less power, use your back brake and you will do it easily and look where you want to go not where you dont want to go, its called target fixation meaning the bike goes where you look
@marlo916 Its the one that the least people are used to, so if you are already good at a LT hand U-turn then you have to develop a new skill, and if you are good at neither then you learn how to LT u-turn in the test and RT u-turn in real life situations - so everybody should be able to do both

Why do they test for a right hand u-turn when you will never legally do a right hand u-turn in the U.S......

We only get 18 feet for 500cc, or 20 feet for more than 500cc here in Australia. 18 feet is tight for a 500cc bike!

cubic centimeters. that's the measure of the engine. can also be expressed in litres.
For example a 1.0liter engine has 1000cc.

what gear do you do this in?
blackbobby 3 years ago
The whole ALT-MOST test is done in 1st or 2nd gear. The test course is not very big at all. In the video above the bike is in 1st gear.

@tjnorred i don't know where you're from, but we drive on the right hand side of the road in the US... you can't make a right side u-turn.
