I love this! I recall it being high in the charts around April-May 1969 when the FA Cup Final was played (Leicester v Manchester City). Oh dear, a bad result.
If my memory serves me well Paul McCartney wrote the song and Tony Visconti produced it .. Please correct me if i am wrong .. I gave up on Wikipedia as a protest. Long story ..
@owainglyndwr16 i'm not too sure on that but i would not be at all surprised if you were right, this is a great song and a great singer, thanks for listening. Carl
There's a rumor that Paul McCartney was right there with her during the recording, and the slap-sounds are Paul. I've never heard his voice backing her up. Does anyone know for certain?
@Newton2041 there is a live version of her doing this song with Paul with her,and i have it on my other channel "carlsfolkclub" but i'm not sure if Paul was in this recording but i would not be surprised if he was as he did own the "Apple Label" which this song was recorded on.Many thanks for your comment. Carl
My iphone is cool and all, and not having had to worry about the Vietnam war draft, but it really sucks that I was born in the early 80's instead of 30 years earlier.
@TheOldrecordclub Your very welcome. Keep the great hits coming. My generation has missed out but as long as people such as yourself still post these forgotten gems we won't have 2 miss out! Thanks again!
First heard this song on Memorial Day, 1969 while listening to Cousin Brucie on 77WABC New York, as heard in Kutztown, PA.
Trivia Treat: Did you know that the Eastern Reaches of Pennsylvania Dutch Country are so close to New York City that hundreds commute there and back daily?
I was born in May 2 1951 almost one year after she saw the lights of this world, and I did adore all her songs which were melancholically sweet and with the passage of time I firmly endorse the poetry in her songs.
@tkyaheya yeah Mary is a great singer and all her songs have good lyrics to them. She is one of my all time favourite female singers.thanks for your comment and for watching. Carl
I am absolutely loving your channel, Carl, the sounds and videos all done so well. As for this song, well, all I can say is that there ain't no time of life like youth - or perhaps I should say young adulthood, and I didn't really grasp that in a way that I was aware of it in the moment, until I was past it. Seen a picture of Mary lately? Not an ugly woman, but it makes "Goodbye" a particularly apt, poignant, and bittersweet song, beautifully and sweetly sung, with a teardrop in her voice.
@alevine1951 cheers mate for your really nice comment, and its getting comments like yours that makes all the time i spend on my channel, and making these videos all worth while, many thanks for watching. Carl
@tukspeacepipes yeah i've always been a big fan of hers Tuks, and apart from being a fantastic singer she is also a great looking lady too.her daughter is also a singer. CARL
oh for the days when youd here songs like this on the radio and rush down the local record shop, for that piece of vinyl. might be easier now with ipods and downloads but the younger generation have lost the fun of collecting the way we did.
@countrybill yeah i know what you mean Bill,i collect all music now, vinyl,CD,and mp3 and would like to think i've got it all covered, but i still think the music sounds better on vinyl, but music and videos and pictures are so much easier to store on a computer.thanks for watching. CARL
@justmusicandme hi Loretta, you can put all my videos in your favourites if you want LOL.so pleased you liked this song and its one of my favourites by Mary. CARL
@VICSMELODIES cheers Vic,there are still a lot of people around who have never heard of her,i will have to put that right by uploading lots more of her music.LOL.thanks for watching and you have a great weekend my friend. CARL
Nice sort of singalong song from Mary here CARL,got me joining in as well !
Never realised how popular she still is,I've just looked to the right of this video and the same song posted some time ago has over half a MILLION views !!!!
@OnlyFifties i take it that it was not one of my videos Mick you were looking at with that sort of viewing LOL, yeah she is still very popular and ive always been a big fan of her's even when i was very young.thanks for watching. CARL
@hrpman hi Victor, yeah i agree, but i don't think she really liked doing the pop/folk type music that much and i think she really preferred doing the more strong welsh type of folk music, but that type of music does not sell so well but i like listening to it.i would have loved to have watched her live. CARL
@YCSMusic cheers Steve,i could not have put it better myself.have a good weekend mate,i will be watching the man utd v man city match with any luck and i wont say who i will be supporting LOL CARL
