@cpacis to have ANY band, singer or otherwise play this song in homage to IZ and the people of Hawai'i is more powerful then you can imagine. His words live on. Thanks to the movie ' 50 First Dates ' I was able to find this great mans music. There is something to be said about a man who's music can touch a soul even after his passing over a decade ago. I feel truly blessed to have heard him, even if only by way of the internet. I can only wish I heard him live back in the day.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs also differentiates between: "Native Hawaiian" (capitalized, referring to any person of native Hawaiian ancestry regardless of blood quantum) and "native Hawaiian" (uncapitalized, referring to a native Hawaiian with at least 50% blood quantum).
In general usage, however, this distinction is often ignored, with both capitalizations being used to describe the native Hawaiian population as a whole regardless of bloodline.
The term "Hawaiian" first existed as a geographic identity limited to the Big Island, and upon the unification of the Hawaiian Islands, as either an ethnic or political identity. The term Hawaiian is today mainly used to describe people of partial or total Native Hawaiian ethnicity or ancestry.
i believe Pearl Jam had the utmost respect for the source material and IZ. but i must admit this seems like something out of a bizarro world, or parallel universe. and to all the haters, IZ would not want you to speak out of hate. peace to all.
charbar198 your a fucking joke blues of Chicago or the classical music of Moscow yeah thats where all the island muzic all really came from ur out of you fucking mind ur prob some dirty ass haole WHAT I FUCKING MEANT ARE SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT ALONE LIKE THIS BRUDDAH IZ MUSIC SO SHUT MOUTH AND GO WATCH NASCAR AND HAVE A BEER HAOLE!
you sound like the hugest retard. i know we had terrible school education in hawaii, but man you need to stay off the internets and lay off the pakalolo for a while.
This was one song IZ sang but it's not his, and he would never say it was. This was 100% in memory of IZ, you think that should be left alone? Why? Do you hate IZ? I'm Hawaiian by the way and am related to Israel.
Johnny bee, are you fucking kidding me? Do you think your island music would be anywhere without the blues of Chicago or the classical music of Moscow or the drums of fucking Africa. Educate yourself you idiot. This was a homage to a great man by a great band.
Pearl Jam meant nothing but the utmost respect for the message. To have arguably one of the best rock bands of all time to take the time to truly feel and appreciate the message so much to the point they did a cover of it is something special and nothing to be frowned at.
I think that Eddie Vedder made it clear at the beginning. It is a tribute to Bruddah Iz. And the lyrics are such that he isn't trying to be a hapa stealing the music. The song is about resisting the haole influence. Why would a haole steal that song out of all of them?
What a wonderful gesture. A great and honorable way to acknowledge the Hawaiian roots. Bruddah IZ must have been smiling down from above. Much mahalos Pearl Jam!
Beautiful. It makes me feel the same sorrow I feel for the "Indians" here on the "mainland". I was at the concert, and I think I remember that song more than anything U2 played.
Finally,a mainlander that recognizes Hawaiian sovereignty.Btw,did you guys saw the protest at I'olani palace on April 30?.KFWB radio and Yahoo announced it.
Hey I'm a mainlander and I recognise Hawaiian Sovereignty, although I have lived on Maui for two years... but still. And i did see the protest, was glad to see it but sorry I couldn't participate.
By sovereignty movement, do you mean the bunch of people with fake license plates at the I'olani Palace lawn having a BBQ and live music (before it was disallowed)? I told my friends, but they had other parties to attend.
On the other hand, they were very nice in greeting me, everyday, while I walked through the grounds.
And has it been mentioned that Pearl Jam's version is on the radio in Hawaii... more than any other version now? every time I turn on STAR...
Yes he butchered the Hawaiian lyrics. Yes it doesn't sound as good as when Iz did it. But then again doing any song that Iz did is intimidating because you will always be hard pressed to live up to his talent.
as much as I like Pearl Jam, and even if Eddie lives on Moloka'i, I think it was dead wrong to play this song. They really, really messed it up. They butchered it. Sorry Pearl Jam, I like you guys but...no.
Pearl Jam's website. You can buy pretty much any of their live shows for $10 or so. I bought this one and it's got like 40 songs and is great quality.
With having fmaily in Hawaii and Samoa, i can relate to what the song is saying; after studying the history and getting verbal accounts of Hawaiian history. Knowing the history of the song and know its a dedication to a great musician as well, give me a whole new look at pearl jam
umm, a lot of people don't know but Eddie has a place on Moloka'i. I'm sure that's where he got a lot of the Hawaiian culture and understanding of this song. He's an awesome guy and loves to learn about the culture of Hawai'i. But, by all means, this song was a treat to the people of Hawai'i when they played it at their concert!
I appreciate this video, but would someone please please put IZ's own voice on a video? Please please do this for all of us fans who love his voice. You could attach it to his rainbow video, but use Hawaii 78 music instead. Please do it. I would, but I don't know how to do it. Thanks. A huge fan!!!!
I might do a slide show with IZ version of "Hawaii 78" but i need a few pictures so it will take a whiled , Once i do i will send you an Inbox message .
I agree that the fact a non-Hawaiian can relate to the sadness of the song. IZ accomplished something huge by getting this message accross not just to Hawaiians. I think that was his intent.
Really why would some of you guys gets so panyies about it I my self is Part hawaiian and i got to say Pearl Jams did a great cover and it gives me Chicken skins *goosebumps * Plus am sure that Brahda IZ him self will be proud of them singing this song . I went to the concert in Hawaii, where they played before U2, and I am very displeased that the played Israel Kamakawioole's song "Hawaii 78." They should not have played that song and I feel great sadness that this happened. It was Israel's song and his only. It was even more displeasing that it came from people that are not even Hawaiian. I know that Pearl Jam didn't mean to hurt anyone, but I feel that besides hurting myself and Hawai'i nei, Israel was also hurt.
Actually it was the Makaha Son's of Ni'ihau's song and I think it's awesome that someone who is not Native Hawaiian can relate to our plight and have done it in a respectful manner. I think it hurt yourself and should not be representative of Hawai'i nei.
He said in the beginning it was a tribute to Bruddah Iz . Do you think it hurts Bob Marley to see his music perpetuated by other local groups and talented musicians worldwide? Great Job Pearl Jam!!!
You must be kidding me. Eddie Vedder may not be hawaiian, but he was performing in Hawaii, therefore he was showing his respect for us Hawaiians and to IZ. It showed us how much of an impact IZ had on "Others", and how he presented our way of life and feelings towards ignorance and stupidity (like yourself).
IZ's song alone? He didn't even write it. He did a cover version in 1993. The song was originally written by Mickey Ioane in 1978. Pearl Jam did the song as a tribute to IZ. Try respecting that. "IZ was hurt"? IZ loved everyone...unlike you, apparently.
it might not have been their song but for at least attepting it and giving props not to themselves but to the man that gave the breath of life to that song its thier own song
I thought it a bold move on Eddie's part to play this song. I also thought his pronounciation of the Hawaiian language was impecable. Pearl Jam rocks and they are the reason I went to that concert. Much props for always be true to their music and fans and never selling out or becoming preachers.

Great show. I went mostly for U2, but Pearl Jam
put on a good show. This made the hair stand up
on my arms when they played it. One thing that
stuck with me from this show is that Eddie Vedder
comes across far more as a real person, while
Bono comes across like an actor, some kind of
over the top cartoon character. Eddie seems to
by trying to make a connection, while Bono pulls
people out of the crowd as props - a lot of it probably scripted.
