17 years old, no one wanted to go with me and my friend Tom (RIP), not sold out, still cold outside (May in NW PA), Sunday night. My life changed that nite!! This was profoundly spectacular...can never forget. God Bless you Frank. You are still THE MAN !!!!!!!!!
@sesamharold ...Dude, I did ask you! But it was '74 so you can be excused for not remembering...in light of the fact that the ENTIRE 70's were a smoke-filled blur. LOL.....Shine On................
thanx shotdonkey for that very interesting info. on this recording.
I know it's blasphemy to say but I always tell my friends that George Gershwin had NOTHING on Frank Zappa, as they both composed to reflect the "zeitgeist", with pure genius. but I prefer FZ's guitar playing to Gershwin by a mile. lol
thanx again for the very interesting musicology on this classic recording. I really do consider it to be one of Zappa's very best long solos.
Geeeeeenius, more prophetic and that trouble keeps comin every day relentlessly,,,frank knew this would turn into a theocratic fascist state without enough vigilance,,he told us so and kept us laughin,,boggling music....zappa forever!
This is indeed the basic track for the Roxy album, no doubt about it. Always fascinating and a little more exciting to hear the raw source and find out what got cut or mixed out for the final release.
A lots of bootlegs are unbeliveables versions of songs on YCDTOSA. Even Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar is awesome on the raw source. The sound is less well and better at the same time XD
@tubaboam I thought the same thing as soon as they started singing. Sounds to me like he pulled the guitar solo from somewhere else though... I'm not recognizing this one.
@Lzndr It's the same solo for sure, but with parts cut out for the album--the little figure at the very beginning and from 5:16 or so to about 6:16, then about 6:47 to 8:19. Really brings me up short when it goes into the parts that didn't make it onto the record--good editing, eh?
The Zappa Plays Zappa version of Son of Orange County leading into Trouble Every Day is an amazingly faithful rendition of this era of the Zappa band - long may it continue and hail to Dweezil!
I still weep to think this legend-genius is no more!!
Don't forget that FZ was a maestro at remixing his solos and the album was actually called: "Roxy & ELSEWHERE"
I'm guessing that this version is the basis for the eventual track that got laid down on the RAE album - there are just too many nuances that are exactly the same as that solo with some obvious differences - especially at the intro. But WTF - who gives a shit when this man did what he did with his guitar - absolutely awesome!
No, I take that back, this isn't the same guitar solo as the one that is on Roxy Live, different take off at the beginning, but you can tell it was from the same time period as he develops the solo in much the same way, but definitely starts with different riff.
I listen to the Roxy version almost every day. Son of Orange County leads into Trouble and features one Zappa's all time solos. This sounds like a different mix from the same performance.
OUTSTANDING!
really, one of the greatest American songs ever played.
this actually IS a different mix of the same performance! the version of "more trouble every day" used on the ROXY live lp was, in effect this one with a few overdubs, recorded in edinboro, early in 1974!
@1922sultan That was quite a tour... I was referring to Hollywood @ the Roxy. I bet the crowd in Edinboro was impressive.. glad you got up close... something to remember forever... the guy really delivered live ... Roxy was just a small club on the Strip..
@alto100 Club setting would have been very cool too. Up close and personal. Did see him at Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh ( its a small 2,000 seat theatre ), in third row. But I know the Roxy, never been there but would love to have been THAT close. He was great man....my wife and I saw him about 10 times since 75. She was my girlfriend in 74 but had to work the night of Edinboro. She still curses me over that!
Saw Frank in Dec 73 at a college and Preston and Simmons as well as Humphrey were not part of the tour. They lived in LA and dropped by for "Live at Roxy" which this appears to be.
wow this was allsome solo

@1922sultan I would have gone with you, but you didn´t ask me! Would have taken all the way from Germany with pleasure for that concert!
I got this ROXY on vinyl, listened to it until you cannot hear the music anymore because of all the scratches :)) - simply GREAT stuff!

Zappa doesn't mention Ruth at the end of the show. He would never forget Ruth. I'm guessing she is not in this particular lineup?

This solo really is a lot different over the second half.
The sound on his guitar in this one and the Roxy version are really searing, barbwire electric guitar at its best.
another great version of one of best Zappa solo platforms ever. again, thanx for posting this.
BOOKMARKED for posterity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
