Not EVERY area in the United states is populated enough for cable/satellite ect to be offered so all some people have is what their local stations broadcast. It's not some big conspiracy. I know- I bought a coupon eligible converter box, the front is all solid non-translucent plastic. A camera would be useless inside.

Not entirely. I agree it's all BS, but in theory, a camera could replace the infrared remote sensor. The same "eye" that allows the signal from your remote through the non-translucent plastic could be used by a camera. In fact the camera itself can see the infrared signal. Just point a remote into your camcorder and see for yourself. But they wouldn't be able to hide that from millions of geeks. :)
