If I'd been at Merlins place, longing so painfully for beeing accept as what I am , I would have asked Arthur about his oppinion towards sorcery and sorcerers right after the nights events. He promised to respect Druids from this day on! Big chance for Merlin ?
Err... how is it sexism just because they don't show women? I mean... there weren't any dogs in this episode either! That must mean the writers totally hate dogs! Oh and no apples for Gwaine either... I'm sure they hate vegetarians... come on! That's ridiculous... The storyline of this episode didn't really need any women and afterall this is a show about knights (and merlin) so of course there aren't women running aroung all the time. Gwen has been banned and it would've been really weak to
just bring her back in the following episode. Apart from that we only have morgana... and to be honest I'm kind of glad that she is not behind EVERY evil thing that's going on. And I don't think that adding a new female character with a lot of screentime would be that smart anyway (especially directly after Gwen had to leave Camelot).
And apart from that... adding female characters just for the fact that it might seem like sexism if there weren't any is kind of sexism too, isn't it?
Merlin Fans that like to comment about every part of the show- first it was that Bradly is rasist because he is bad in love seens and then the writers were rasist cause Elyan doesnt get much screen time. and now the show is sexist cause there was no women in this episode.
@TheKingCobraX1 Well i got an idea, lets stop being so judgmental and just watch the show we all love. I mean there is plenty of times when things happen and theres no women, or a curtain race of person involved, and thats what this is supposed to be betraying. the fact that this is fantasy, doesnt mean they cant be real about it.
This episode was complete crap (with the exception of Colin's acting). They need to kill off Gaius (he is utterly useless & gives the world's shittest advice) & start paying more attention to Gwen & Morgana's charcter development. The fact that there wasn't a single female in this episode at all shows just how little the writer's respect women & the blantant sexism & favouring of the male characters sickens me tbh :(
@DGDanonymous20121 Like duh, I wasn't talking about the charcter's sexism (which I understand is apart of these times, even if the rest of the show isn't historically accurate at all so I don't see the need to include this detail anyway..) However, I was referring to the show creators blantant sexism & they definitely aren't from the stone age :/
@ellehcimbelle Well not everything ,has to be wrong and about the stone age part , i meant it as a figure of speech (if it were the stone age , things(a lot) would be so so different) .
Seriously - you know they deliberately made that last bit off-screen.
They wanted this debate of "what happened" to start. Even though it's obvious Arthur probably pulled Merlin's arm behind his back and then beat him to a pulp in the sparring yard again...at least Elian won't be there to try to kill him again.
But they gave the fans a bit of delusional intrigue by simply letting things run out of frame. This must be how directors get their kicks...creating fan intrigue and gossip.
This is a very good episode... Arthur is more and more becoming the king the dragon has foreseen him to be once. He is able to really feel what he has done, and to take the responsibilty, amd to decline his way. I especially like the way he gets more and more independent from the influence of his uncle A. It's such a great difference to Episode 7. Now he openly estimates Merlins views and opinions. In this state of grieve and awereness he is able to find his own way of being king. Just great.
Why did the writers put a scene of Arthur treating Merlin like dirt in the end of this episode. This rendered Arthur's "you're a loyal friend Merlin" line and the hug he had with Merlin completely pointless. Arthur seemed to have reverted back to his Series 1 self and this spoiled the episode especially after the beautiful emotional scene with that boy forgiving Arthur. What were the writers THINKING, stupid idiots.
@broman178 They were just going back to their usual banter; Arthur wasn't treating Merlin like dirt. Arthur seems embarrassed that Merlin keeps talking about what happened in the forest and (as usual) tells him to shut up; Merlin provokes him further by jokingly asking for a hug. I don't think Arthur's character or the Arthur-Merlin dynamic has changed or reverted back to a previous series; Arthur still sees Merlin as a loyal friend (he let him follow him into the forest, after all).
@serenitysky2 Well said. This is a bromance not a chick relationship so don't look at it as if it where. Men talk and treat each other this way. Men don't do open emotion so they find other ways to show they care. Usually saying the opposite of what they feel and hitting or wrestling with one another. As serenitysky2 said Arthur allowed Merlin to come along and see him in a very vulnerable state. That is trust and love.
@diamondperidot As much as I hate to generalize and stereotype relationships between males versus those between females, I think this is a very accurate analysis of Arthur and Merlin's relationship. I love their bromance so much :)
@IngoLove Really! And what was happening offscreen--???!!! Were they walking towards the door -- or the bed....LOL just kidding folks (you diehard Merlin fans)
Too bad they didn't do justice to Gwen's character! She didn't hurt Arthur intentionally - enchantment remember. Arthur needs to question things. Gwen told him she didn't know why she behave the way she did towards Lancelot! Shouldn't that clue him on possibly non-human actions like magic?
@doctorsam000 I don't think Arthur actually loved Gwen completely. He wanted to make her queen as a position in round table because she provided support and councelling etc. When there is a reason for loving someone its hardly any love IMO. Gwen was to be recruited as Queen like anyother knight on roundtable by King Arthur.
I would have far preferred Arthur confiding in Merlin at the end as a friend. Instead, Arthur treated Merlin like a dic all episode long. Don't understand the sudden change in his personality and the reason for it, after all, all season long, Merlin has been his only true and reliable friend. This episode he went back to treating him like a servant. I think the episode took us backwards and now we have to face the ascendency of Morgana for the remainder of the season.
@SoCalifFan I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he's been hurt by Gwen, someone he really trusted, and he doesn't want to get hurt again by someone else he actually trusts.
@SoCalifFan Don't forget, Gwen just cheated on Arthur and he banished her. Even if he doesn't talk about it, he's still hurt and upset--so I'm not really surprised that he's kinda taking it out on Merlin. Sure, it's wrong, but I don't think it's necessarily out of character. :/ I don't like seeing it though.
@SoCalifFan He might also be embarrassed by the truly emotional scene in the forest when he was totally ready to sacrifice himself and obviously very afraid -- never saw Arthur that afraid before (still he was very in control of himself)
I think the sudden change is very logical and obvious. Arthur is very grumpy/sad about guinevere (don't know how to spell her name) leaving and especially because she 'cheated' on him.
@Annietje01 -- Gwen with Lancelot, facing his history at a slaughter, probably Uncle A. digging politely whenever possible. .... His feelings would WAY surpass grumpy/sad. At times, he almost looks like Uther when he was sitting in his chair staring at nothing except memories. It's accumulative of the year. Morganna turned, Uther died, Gwen cheats with Lance and on and on. In RL this much could break a person.
I thought the pace of this episode was really slow, and the acting was a bit sub-par. I liked the plot, and am happy to see Arthur and the Druids finally seeking peace. I give it a 3/5. Good story, but it could have been executed better. I hope these last few episodes leading to the finale are epic.

So all the people who were shouting "racism" last week can now eat some humble pie.
