the problem with WD40 is, this is a penitrating Lube. they do not stay longer. it may be better to start with a lithium grease wouldn't it?

Cooking oil works best because it doesn't evaporate and as it goes rancid becomes a thicker and more viscous lubricant.

You can also use silicone spray to lube.
