It depends. Some people will commission the construction of costumes for themselves while other well build them themselves. It all depends on personal preference.

Some of the higher quality suits can cost several thousand dollars.

it was a lot of fun, I have to admit. No, I didn't sport a costume at AC last year but I may for Anthrocon 2008. I'm not really a fursuiter myself however I have recently built and worn a tiger suit at Futher Confusion 2008.

20 hours?! That seems a whole lot to film. I wish I had a good video camera; all I have is a digital camera which can film videos and I'm kind of thinking that maybe I should've bought a decent video camera instead of it.

All of that was taken with a Canon SD800IS digital camera in movie mode, actually. I have a couple of real video cameras (which you can get for as little as $150 if you look in the right places) but they're not as convenient to use for quick filming.
