Isabelle Huppert sturkc mein this movie.. amazing-looking woman, with a very enigmatic type of charisma and unique sexy pout! Never heard of her before, before coming across this movie and never heard of he3r since, but now she turns up in 'The Piano Teacher' 25 years later. So different!
Make somthing painfully slow, very long, add some good cinematography, and you will always find people wanting to label them masterpieces. This movie is up there with English Patient and Cold Mountain. Give me long movies were stuff actually happens like Dances with Wolves and Godfather anyday.
To say so many folks missed the essence, the heart and soul of this masterpiece is an understatement.
I came from a humble European country to the US and how I identify with those pilgrims is uncanny. The music is terrific to anyone who isn't into rap 24/7. There is romance, style, and beauty in it that has so badly escaped current American hip hop, rap, etc.
Never before has a film divided opinion so much, you either LOVE it or HATE it. Personally this is one of my all time favourites and is up there with Blade Runner, Once Upon A Time In The West, Midnight Cowboy or any of the iconic masterpieces. I also think its a far stronger film than The Deer Hunter which to my mind was weakened overall by the plot involving De Niro's return to Vietnam for Nicky. There ain't another picture in history that looks like this either, though many have imitated it.
@ColdBishop You have to start from the beginning. He's from Harvard and privileged beyond measure. But instead of marriage for social status, he seeks marriage for love, even in a brothel. The man is an idealist.
I don't know off the top of my head,In a lonely place, rear window, taxi driver, full metal jacket,Bring me the head of alfredo garcia. There kristopherson was well cast ,here he's an embarrassment.Westerns? The man who shot liberty vallance, for a few dollars more
Say what you want about cimino,he cured insomnia with this film.Probably the worst film ever, simply by the fact, nothing even slightly compelling happens. No tension,drama...nothing,there's just NOTHING there!
@BigDuke6ixx Wrong,i went into this movie doing my best to give it a shot, and there is just nothing engaging.THE SCRIPT IS JUST NOT COMPELLING.The deer hunter would be like this if it wasn't so well cast, but even that film is very dull.Cimino just doesn't know how to put a film together.
@TheGatorfan93, Deer Hunter dull? Yeah, right. Heaven's Gate was a classic example of the critics doing a hatchet job and sheep like you going along with them. Maybe you are getting your revenge in because The Deer Hunter was so successful.
@BigDuke6ixx Yes dull, cimino makes the deer hunter start out about the friendship of three guys, and then just focuses on one,in a ridiculous love triangle.Cimino obviously didn't learn in heaven's gate.At least Barry lyndon is coherent,it has a great voice-over to keep it somewhat interesting. This film has nothing interesting! And the only thing the deer hunter had on heavens gate, was that it was wonderfully cast, which makes it somewhat watchable.
I see very similar sentiments expressed when folk discuss music or film, in fact just about everything; maybe we should all go and find somewhere else to live, away from the philistines that appear to make life so unpleasant.....oh of course, that’s already been done; they called it America.
Yes, the movie was long. Also depressing at the end. But in the midst of all the pain and nonsense that was around, the relationship between these two characters is a high point of the story, depicted well by this scene of quiet, sincere enjoyment and deep mutual appreciation. Look for and hold onto islands of elegance like this today.
This is a truly wonderful scene from a lost gem of a movie. The story was a tad complex for the popcorn munchers of the time but it will always remain a masterpiece.
Many thanks for this upload. Heavens Gate is one of my alltime favorite movies. I had the pleasure to watch the uncut version in a German cinema many years ago and it left a lasting impression. Brilliant cast, beautiful pictures, and although the film contains extreme violence, you never gained the impression it was shown for the sake of it, on the contrary, it underlined the directors claim for liberty, egality and fraternity. This is not a communist, but a rather democratic movie!
@gittar1 no way.....that was you? I don't understand what the hell happened in 1980. Could it be that on the 3rd week, lennon getting shot was the reason why people halted seeing violent movies? I heard in a documentary saying something about that.
The fiddler (who also composed the music) is beyond CUTE!!!

¿Misunderstood masterpiece? CRAP, and i see the full version 1 A bunch of stupid scenes(not slow paced scenes, just stupid).
2 Throw money to garbage(Asshole Cinimo was yelling of everything)
3 This movie destroy the artistic vision of hollywood new era.
okay its not a good film. the guilt relies on the director, not in the violence of the film.
Take for example: sam peckingpah, leone, corbucci, eastwood. His westerns are violent but at least they dont treat his viewers like morons.
