the main reason for white clothing and red ball was that BCCI has a rotation policy wrt the grounds that can host matches. Now during those days, since most of the grounds in India did not have floodlights, and certain series were to be played only on such grounds (so as to give fair opportunity to all the state associations) hence there was no point in playing with the white ball as there would be no day-night games.

@chiragasar but some grounds had floodlights.....they could have played d/n games in those venues and day games in the others even with colored clothing.Out of 5 games there would surely have been 2-3 venues that had floodlights atleast.

@vindaisatossermini Probably cause the red ball helped the bowlers a bit more for a longer period of time.You had to wear whites to play with a red ball.All that went out of the window later on just like everything else in the bowlers favour.I am just guessing though.

Because until the 2001 or so they used to play one day cricket in white clothing if it was purely a day game.The used to play with colour clothing only in day night games and major events.
