Think about that. The U.S. was not a capable war machine until ww2. The country literally went from crib to warrior-king in 7 years or so! Ike wasn't stupid. He saw how passing off such responsibility would be daunting. The nation grew up too quick. I think it's a shame that we will see it fall in our lifetime...
Watch 2005 documentary "Why We Fight" for insight on Eisenhower's prophetic warning against collusion of private industry and government. His fear was that faceless, unaccountable private sector defense contractors would influence American foreign policy by lobbying congress and the pentagon to increase sales and production of their products and ultimately their profits without regard for diplomacy, democracy or even national interest.
@god0fgod: Not that the US military is corrupt, but that the armaments industry never existed before, and now it's so big and powerful that it will drive US policy towards permanent war. War for profit's sake. This has eroded true democracy and replaced it with a plutocracy of the Defense Industry (Military Industrial Complex).
@kreskinkun How long had he been in office when he made this statement? "The responsibilities of Office". Why didn't he put something in place to prevent it happening when he had these responsibilities? He's merely shifting blame for the history books. He was just a tool like most of the others.
@TheHolySpirit Listen one more time. He says that it was *necessary* during and prior to his presidency (I believe he uses the phrase "we recognize the imperative need for this development"), but that it needs to be carefully watched. Consider it to be like holding a dangerous object and then passing it on.
@TheHolySpirit yes, here we are today seeing the results.....of our inaction against the military-industrial complex's empirical tyranny & for not heeding Eisenhower's warning

Wow, that is an amazing speech. To bad we did the direct opposite of what IKE wanted. It is so sad what this nation has become.
