I know the place where that kid was beaten and killed. It is a block away from a house that I own (I'm a landlord). Yes it is a rough part of town, but most of the people are pretty good there. Most residents are Black, poverty is not rare, but it is home to people. It is safe enough to walk around there and this incident to me seems random. There are rougher parts of Chicago and America.

An example of a minority that were equally discriminated against and poor in the past is the Asians. How did this community work out its problems differently than the black community? A culture of emphasizing family values and education.

But one major way that could make a significant dent in both problems is the promotion of strong family values and emphasis on education. If a person hasn't felt another's pain, then it is impossible for them to understand one another. Empathy is a conscious activity and substances (Alcohol, Drugs etc) inhibit that cognitive function and put a person in a sub-animal state. Get rid of the substances and then we all might be awake long enough to realize the problem and discus a solution.

I know the place where that kid was beaten and killed. It is a block away from a house that I own (I'm a landlord). Yes it is a rough part of town, but most of the people are pretty good there. Most residents are Black, poverty is not rare, but it is home to people. It is safe enough to walk around there and this incident to me seems random. There are rougher parts of Chicago and America.

Black leader look at the problems in their communities and point to past, current discrimination as the source of the problem. It is true that discrimination is a problem, but laws and systems that counter that only go so far in treating the systemic problems. An example of a minority that were equally discriminated against and poor in the past is the Asians. How did this community work out its problems differently than the black community? A culture of emphasizing family values and education.

AmanJohnK, There are no simple solutions to issues of poverty and crime. They are self perpetuating and create a vicious cycle. But one major way that could make a significant dent in both problems is the promotion of strong family values and emphasis on education. Something that Bill Cosby has tried to do; but many black leaders think that is type of self criticism is unhealthy and reject a lot of the notions of self help. Continued in next comment...

You also fail to point out on the Department of Justice Statistics website it does say that blacks are disproportionately represented among homicide victims and offenders. This means that since there are more caucasians than there are negroes, then of course negroes will be higher because caucasian can balance there numbers out. AmanJohnK, I had no real answer for u but after reading a couple of the other comments, it was evident what at least part of the problem was. If a person hasn't felt another's pain, then it is impossible for them to understand one another. Empathy is a conscious activity and substances (Alcohol, Drugs etc) inhibit that cognitive function and put a person in a sub-animal state. Get rid of the substances and then we all might be awake long enough to realize the problem and discus a solution.

Very well said! As an African American Male I must say this is a situation that cannot be looked over by the media and forgotten after the ratings have fallen. This is real human issue and this young man is not the first person nor will he be the last to die because of senseless violence. Communites have to get involved as a whole and let those kids know this will not be tolerated under any circumstance. They have to pay for what they did period. Make parents RESPONSIBLE for their minor childrens actions. YES SEND the PARENTS to JAIL or IRAQ RIGHT ALONGSIDE the CHILDREN...and guess what will happen! I am Latino but grew up in Inglewood, CA. No longer a majority African American city, but having grown up in the "hood" to a single mother who worked as an administrative assistant for various companies, attended public school, and took public transportation, I know the dangers that face children in such circumstances.
His death was unfortunate, however, a wake up call to the African American community. Some try to minimize "Black on Black" violence.
