DEMCAD: If you live in the city, forget it. You won't be able to save anything. The gangs will take it away from you. There's only one plave to be , in the country.
I dont need to protect my garden. I can find the equivalent of everything that grows their in the forest(wild edible plants, berries, nuts and seeds): its just less work to harvest food frm my garden when hiking thrugh the forest from spot to spot and gathering thousands of small berries in comparrison to harvesting some huge tomatos haha
Rice and beans - cheap, and store for years if you keep them dry and away from rodents and insects. 20 pound bag of white rice is about $16 at wal mart.
Rural is best by far. Buy food, buy bottled water, be sure to buy & build a 72-hour Go-Bag or Ditch-Bag. Stock up on camping supplies. I would also have a firearm with at least 500 rounds of ammo. Develop an independent lifestyle and don't be a victim of this retreat from Capitalism and the embrace of Socialism. Be smart. Be prepared. And by all means, be careful. I hope you are taking this seriously.
Riots occur in cities. Bigger the city, bigger the riot. Get out of the city if you can. When the grocery store closes, where will people obtain food? Wherever they can.
Rural folk are pretty pissed at the Liberal trashbags in the metroplexes, from what I learned. Cities burn too, remember that. Rioters, starving peeps. Rural communities better than a isolated house just outside a large city, that place would just be a starving rape gang party waiting to happen.
water. water. water. invest in a food saver it will greatly extend shelf life. tuna, salmon, peanut butter, honey better that sugar/syrup. nuts-best stored in freezer after vac-sealing. beans (can & dry),lentils, can fruit. vitamins. oatmeal, cream of wheat. NON HYBRID SEEDS!!!
Economic collapse = no electricity. No electricity = no heat, no light, no communication, no transportation, no fuel, no water or sewage. Winter time? We'll be eating each other.

keep the canned goods at low temp and they will last longer with less nutritive loss,,,in your rice, crumble bay leaves,,this IS effective in preventing little critters from living,,though they(critters) are extra protein,,stevia supposedly sugar substitute,,container gardens are good for limited space,,,,Demcad..get armed and trained
I live in an urban city in Canada and I feel confident that in a short term emergency, one or two weeks things will be fine so long as if you stocked up and had gotten the necessities; canned food, water, alternative power sources. Long though, is another story. Rural or small towns are best for the reasons you mentioned, especially growing your own food and establishing neighborhood watch and barter.
If I had a choice, I would choose rural. Unfortunately, I am stuck in a condo, with units on both sides and also in front and back. If I get the opportunity, I will get out.
Urban is tough due to the lack of garden space and total dependence on utilities. Rural is rough because you're vulnerable. Gangs are likely to pile onto old pickups and start capturing isolated homes, looting and killing then moving on to the next one.
Suburbs close to the city are best I think. Close enough to where manufacturing will resume (since we'll no longer be able to import clothes from china), with space for a garden and with neighbors close by to man an active neighborhood watch.
Ya, it's a trade off. I live in a condo complex that's fenced, with a gate, a natural spring on site and a surprising amount of yard that can be carved up for gardens. If TSHTF We'll have enough people to run a couple 24/7 guards at the gate, with one rover. It's not like we'll be working so we'll have time for it. I'm stocking up on ammo and I think I'll pickup a couple cheap 9mm rifles for the guards.
No disrespect Demcad(and now here is the disrespect, sorry) but it seems that you have been preparing your body for a depression by stocking up on food by eating it. You could survive a few weeks easily with little food. I have been able to store a few pounds under my belt also. I can now call it recession preparation.
the canned fruits are great they provide lots carbs..the juices can be used too...you can even ferment the fruit and make alcohol.
Gardening in old neighborhoods may be dangerous because of lead content in the soils...cities like Champaign Urbana has parks where they rent you garden space. Now would be a good time to check that out in your community.
Ive done a lot of thinking regarding food reserves... and i believe that having 3 to 6 months worth of food on hand is very important. Should we have a major collapse of the economy...which seems very likely..i believe that lining up in some parking lot waiting for the "government" to hand out parcels of groceries sounds sort of dangerous. I think canned and pre-prepared food is best...food that doesent require cooking or water to be eatable . Small sizes of cans would be least wasteful.
yeah rice sugar n milk is the cereal in our house.i just bought about 50 boxes each of stove top(generic)they are 98cents each and instant potatoes, and granola bars, ect at walmart 5am 2day(beat the crowd),i took them outa the box and stacked them alongside of eachother.the casheir laughed and said who needs all this, well i told him what u already know. i am getting food that takes little time to prepare,n instant potatoes can b made with cold water,i tried it,real nasty but will fill the belly!
Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth! Isaiah 5:8
So, according to God's word, living crammed together in a "house joined onto house" type situation are going to experience "woe". So, I would say go out in the rural (country), forget the city! Forget the suburbs too, the houses there are practically joined together as well.
George4Title briefly posted a video about an "Eco Village" that followed a communal living model. I was impressed in the green lifestyle his video depicted. Unlike most of the para-military focus on YouTube, it wasn't all about defending your food from the hordes. Instead it was about living in peace and in harmony with your surroundings and community. I'm willing to bet that something like that would be feasible in Alaska.

Urban is best. You get together with some friends, and go rape, pillage, and plunder all the stockpiles of food your rural neighbors have gathered.

That works until somebody feeds you some lead. Now you know lead can be bad for your health.

I dont like the country because I am worried about economic collapse, I just prefer it.
Less pollution and crime, urban blight and architecture makes me want to kill myself, and cities have traffic and no nature.
