I read somewhere that there will be a new Sweeney movie and that Ray Winstone will play Jack Regan. I would have thought Philip Glenister would be a better choice since he played a similar character in Life on Mars.
DI Jack Regan was the original hardnut poet. These were the days when things got sorted out properly. No do-gooders interfering, no Politically Correct poison, just get in, sort it out and job done. RIP Mr John Thaw...very sadly missed. Makes one yearn for the old days! ;)
@Fenner1976 'Politically correct poison'. That statement suggests you may hold poisonous views yourself. If you were black, I don't think you'll be come out with such rose tinted views of 1970s policing.
@dm18876 I appreciate your comment, but at what point did I actually say I had rose tinted views of 1970's policing? I don't think I did? It's a comment on a Sweeney video compared with how things have changed today. You clearly have strong views on this, which is good as that's your view.
@ossyrefugee No thanks. In the 1970s the police were corrupt and institutionally racist. With a police force like that, you might as well have had anarchy.
Keep Scotland out of it, as the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four could not have been convicted on just the confessions beaten out of them...by the English proper Police FORCE!
Regan and Carter were "straight" though, which is more than can be said for most of the rest of The Flying Squad at the time.
But the English, or rather Thames Television, made the best cop show EVER !
As a kid I remember the "Armchair Thriller" series of "made for TV films. A producer thought that John Thaw's moody renagade detective had the potential for a series and we all say "too bloody right....Slag !"
The Sweeney is excellent - as someone who didn't even exist when it was made I still think its better than anything I've seen done before or since. John Thaw was the dogs bollocks.
In One word- CLASS! 'The Sweeney,' still the BEST Police show made in the UK. Hard hitting, gritty, violent, great humour and an accurate represention of the relentless grind of Police work. Regan & Carter rule!
Classic scene!

I would love to find the clip where Tony Selby says "Regan's an animal. You can't bribe an animal"!

one of my favorite regan quotes was "he's been getting in to trouble since he was old enough to sit on a pub step"

I still think the best Regan line ever was, "If you weren't who you are I'd kick your arse right up to your shoulderblades!"

Regan was a legend, The Sweeney was the best thing on telly during the 70s

The greatest line in all of English drama. People talk about Shakespeare that transcends anything he wrote
