true music comes from a place darker than the absence of light, darker than Ian Curtis's soul and the very roots of this beautiful darkness is hidden in the apathetic tones of every modest mouse breakdown
As someone who is friends with these guys and a musician. What gives any of you the right to decide who it is okay to listen to this or not, regardless of how they found about them. I've been listening since the early '90's. Does that mean you all suck? NO. Good music is good music. I'm sorry if your life is pathetic enough to dwell on such things.
ive been clean off of heroin for 3 years now and this song is as close to a heroin rush as i can get whithout actually doing smack.......this song literally gets me high,
This is unspeakably good. I mean, I can feel an aura of ego just melting off of me in sloppy chunks. I get way too into this. It would make most of you uncomfortable.
I like it all, I just think they can do know wrong. The old stuff is rawer, sadder, but the new stuff makes me smile in a different way. Favourite band in the world...
@drevilchild1 Now, I only mean this to be somewhat mean, partypooper, but why is it that the people who like the newer stuff more can't form complete sentences or write above a 3rd grade level? I think Isaac may be writing for the wrong audience these days.
@eyetranceend sadly you may be right but i think it has a lot more today with the outrageous rise in the number of fucking retarded sub-human hipsters, and obviously its extremely hip to listen to modest mouse. couple with the laziness of most people today, they type modest mouse into youtube and listen to the first songs they find
does anyone else think the crazy guitar at the end actually sounds like mechanical birds or am i crazy. that crazy stuff he does with the tremolo arm im assuming
Lonesome Crowded West is pretty spectacular as is Long Drive...but I also put Moon and Antarctica up there. That album is fantastic from beginning to end.
@bso6750 I'd say the top five are the three older ones, Lonesome Crowded West, Long Drive, Moon & Antartica, with the two newer ones, We were Dead and Good News. Honestly, all of their stuff is great.
lol, I think at first MM decided they would create a sad song about the hardships of life, overflowing with melancholy, but then they said "fuck it" and went nuts
I love seeing people talk shit about this band being depressing, this band has just described more feeling than you will feel in your whole life, im talking about real feelings. real worlds. and they aren't said just to be said. this band.. no, this song, will live longer than any of you hating on it. 0 dislikes. out of 55THOUSAND views. fuck off, enjoy the music you got the lucky enough to stumble upon
Back in the nineties emo wasn't an insult. it wasn't really even a word. What it was back then was pretty cool. Anyway shut the fuck up about genres, this is modest mouse.
@bretfavresucksballs pretty much emo is negative, always sad ect. pretty much MM is sometimes is sometimes sad, sometimes drifting, sometimes pissed of, sometimes happy, sometimes optimistic, sometimes just rocking my balls off.
whoever typed "emo" was probably to lazy to type "emotional"
"Sad" would be the last word I'd ever use to describe emo music. Sad music is the best type of music because you know the songwriter poured out his soul to make that song so emotionally moving. Would you call blues music emo? I fucking hope not. Emo music would be more correctly described as jump-in-the-air-you-mindless-spoiled-teenybopping-fucks kind of music, like fallout boy and shit. The term emo is just a meaningless euphemism for an idiotic trend, it has nothing to do with emotion.
I love the entire song but the part from 3:21 to 6:05 is amazing. It's mixture of happiness and sadness (IMHO) and yet it's all instrumental. To be able to elicit those emotions without using lyrics isn't an easy thing to do. It's happy but yet it sounds like a crying baby bird who lost its mother is singing over the music.
@iamyourgranddaddy sounds like a G major!!!! haha no really though i love g major becuase it is happy but yet so sad when its used. haha kinda random....
In Ken Kesey's book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, he compares shaking the limp hands of patients in a mental ward to shaking the hand of," dead birds, mechanical birds". I think Isaac may have used that as a metaphor for the way the guitars sound like false imitations of real birds, chirping in a desperate attempt to mimic something real.
@xAbolishGovernmentx Birds have vocal chords, just like guitars. Guitars are made of another element. It's not that the guitars aren't real, they're just mechanical. Like the vocal chords of birds.
My hearts torn right now. I love this song and all modest mouse. It Always Rains on a Picnic.. :( MM creates art that opens your soul (with or without permission) and then rams a train of thought [over] into you.
If you've ever eaten a lot of dramamine(which I am not recommending AT ALL) you'll deffinately understand this album a bit better. "Exit Does Not Exist" and obviously "Dramamine." I feel like he just took a road trip to nowhere with a lot of drugs; dramamine being the weapon of choice and wrote the world as he saw it. Fucking LOVE Modest Mouse.
It seems that he's been living his life as a people pleaser, and he realizes all of those different faces he put on for different people stacked up to the point he forgot about himself. Now he's trying to figure out who he actually is so he can start to care about himself.
im not suuuurrrrre........im pretty sure it's his guitar though. Have you read otherwise? I know i have made similar sounds on an electric but there are some sound effects being played backwards at 3:50.........is that to what you were referring?
best message in a song. isaac is either refering to how nature has become commercialized or how birds represent happiness and the happiness feels so artificial and manufactured. great song
respect the song. youtube comments aren't about justifying your opinions to other people, it's about taking advantage of self expression, freedom of speech. if we abide by peace, love, and minding our own bussiness, the world would run so much smoother.(: take that into account next when commenting on other peoples comments instead of the whole reason you found them in the first place, the video.
this is an amazing song, and isaac brock is a commendable lyricist.
If one could find beauty in contrasted focus; as light defines dark, evil creates the prerequisite for good, sad times outline the happy ones, then I believe I would hate Modest Mouse to establish in others a definition for their love.
It's kind of funny how the people who say they don't care about other people not liking this song are getting really worked up over it. And instead of worrying about someone else getting in trouble over something they said, you should probably worry about yourself. Profanity is no way to express oneself in a mature fashion. :)
back in high school the first time i did cid one of my buddeys brought over this album... needless to say, i fell in love with modest mouse on the spot..
Are you apologizing for how retarded you are? I don't blame you, if I was half as stupid as you were I'd apologize to everyone I'd ever met for giving them a negative impression of the sentient intelligence of human beings.
"commented despite her" good job using that word in context jackass. Here's an idea, why don't you tell your worthless opinion to her fucking face next time. You can go ahead and hate this song, that's your opinion, but don't tell us you hate it because we don't give a fuck. You must be the kind of idiot who says aloud every thought that comes to your fat head, that shit will get you in trouble one day kid.
well, i can't read your original comment, due to the negative feedback you received... but... Are you kidding me? Are you trying to relate a song by Modest Mouse to being emo?
1. Modest Mouse is one of the farthest things from "emo" there are.
2. This song kicks ass.
The Fruit That Ate Itself and Steam Eugenius are fair songs, yet this song definitely tops them by far. But then again, I'll just let everyone have their own opinions, I can't make everyone happy.
@gaphary Modest Mouse is my favorite band, and I fucking hate emo's and emo music, but Modest Mouse can be depressing and Isaac has cut himself on stage multiple times. Theres even a youtube video of a concert where he does it. Meh idk. 2.This song does kick ass though
@aristopunk1 oh i agree, i generally don't, but someone said this was the furthest thing from emo. And I guess I tend to disagree. Irrelevant though. This song is amazing
@gaphary emo used to be a different thing dude. not the bull shit now of days. listen to early husker du or cap'n jazz, some of the first emo bands and tell me modest mouse wasnt enormiously inspired by them
he's talking about how he doesnt know himself. if you haven't figured it out by now that all brock writes about is drugs, finding yourself and various aspects of depression then you're a fucking idiot.
Oh my. the primary line is "I'm not sure who I am, but I know who I've been." that obviously means no, he doesn't know himself, but he may be the sum of all he has been. So far as I know, the only songs outright about drugs by them is "Dramamine" and "Novocain (Stain)" and they're not exactly viewing them in a positive light. However, he does seem the type to be a pot head anyways. The world isn't about drugs.
Ummm.......the good times are killing me, polar opposites, all night diner, here it comes.......and others. Seems to me you are the one "forgetting"......why is that?
i disagree with you. i have immediately at least one come to mind about drugs (one of my favorites, as well) styrofoam boots/ its all nice on ice, alright. but i agree the world isnt about drugs. for the lucky majority any way.
@XxInputxX Check the comment again ;) I never said anything about the vocals in this song. Personally, I love them. I'm just that nowadays, the general population believes a song isn't good without "good" vocals.
@TexasLonghorn07 could not be anymore right XD!!! some of my favorite artists are actually comlpetely instrumental musicians, like buckethead(single artist) or praxis (band)!!!

@aristopunk1 oh i agree, i generally don't, but someone said this was the furthest thing from emo. And I guess I tend to disagree. Irrelevant though. This song is amazing
Preisellack 1 year ago
@Preisellack he was pretty high on meth or coke or something like that at that show so that could've been the reason he cut himself.

@gaphary emo used to be a different thing dude. not the bull shit now of days. listen to early husker du or cap'n jazz, some of the first emo bands and tell me modest mouse wasnt enormiously inspired by them
TheDallyLama 11 months ago
he's talking about how he doesnt know himself. if you haven't figured it out by now that all brock writes about is drugs, finding yourself and various aspects of depression then you're a fucking idiot.
JosephO75 2 years ago 4
Oh my. the primary line is "I'm not sure who I am, but I know who I've been." that obviously means no, he doesn't know himself, but he may be the sum of all he has been. So far as I know, the only songs outright about drugs by them is "Dramamine" and "Novocain (Stain)" and they're not exactly viewing them in a positive light. However, he does seem the type to be a pot head anyways. The world isn't about drugs.

Oh, and the only reason I thumbs up'd your post is because I clicked the wrong one....

Ummm.......the good times are killing me, polar opposites, all night diner, here it comes.......and others. Seems to me you are the one "forgetting"......why is that?

looshkin66 2 years ago
i disagree with you. i have immediately at least one come to mind about drugs (one of my favorites, as well) styrofoam boots/ its all nice on ice, alright. but i agree the world isnt about drugs. for the lucky majority any way.

Same here, Sara!
I didn't mind the instrumentals.
It seemed like they were there
for you to think...About the song,
and your life, you know. C:>

You "didn't mind" the instrumentals?
It's sad to me that so many people nowadays believe music requires vocals to be good...
TexasLonghorn07 2 years ago 67
yea man... the instrumentals is the best part.
to me anyways.
5lbTumor 2 years ago 4
@TexasLonghorn07 Its kind of sad that you think this songs vocals aren't good.
XxInputxX 1 year ago
@XxInputxX Check the comment again ;) I never said anything about the vocals in this song. Personally, I love them. I'm just that nowadays, the general population believes a song isn't good without "good" vocals.
TexasLonghorn07 1 year ago
@TexasLonghorn07 EXACTLY....and rarely nowadays do the lyrics or vocals actually HELP a song...some of the shit you cant even understand!
nyclaybreaker 1 year ago
@TexasLonghorn07 The vocals are good.. Theyre amazing! Isaac is an amazing singer. It's called Indie music bimbo's.
evandb42 1 year ago
@TexasLonghorn07 could not be anymore right XD!!! some of my favorite artists are actually comlpetely instrumental musicians, like buckethead(single artist) or praxis (band)!!!
