I am fairly certain that the whole point of a barber shave is the relaxation aspect...notice the gentleman in the chair is almost asleep...try that with your mach5.

A shave with a straight razor accomplishes a better shave with far less irritation to your skin. Using proper lather > any canned garbage.

A straight razor is the traditional style of shaver that he's using. Far far far sharper than any mach/gilette/schick razor (although the 1950's razors were very very good). A straight razor gives you a much closer shave than a mach 5.

Proper lather refers to the use of real shaving creams mixed with a badger hair brush and applied to the face properly. The canned stuff irritates the face, sometimes has benzocane in it and they have to add unnatural lubricants.

You could get a straight razor shave at most barbers and some hairstylists. A good site for getting into straight razor shaving is classicshaving(dot)com or you can get the stuff off Ebay if it's in good condition. At first, it's far more expensive than a disposable razor, but since the razors can last well long enough to be passed down to your grandson, the cost in the long run is far cheaper.

One thing he should never do is rub or wipe the area just shaved as this introduces bacteria to the open pours, which then leads to razor rash and burn. Otherwise a good video

With an electric shaver, you're not really shaving in any direction. The little blades inside move back and forth (or around in circles) very quickly.

The electric razor is designed to be easy to use and convenient, which it is, not to provide the same quality as a traditional wet-shave.

If you're curious, have a look at mantic59's videos on wet shaving. That's how I learned. It takes a bit longer, and you have to actually *learn* how to shave. But for me, the better shave is worth it.

That razor does have a disposable blade - and the wipe on the hand or a fresh towel is pretty common when you get it done. It's actually more sanitary than rinsing your blade in a sink or cup of water repeatedly.
