  • if this show hadn't become a the symbol for more or less the worst flop imaginable and if the book "not since Carrie" hadn't been such a succes few people would probably have invested such passion in either reviling ot reviving it..personally what I've seen and heard of it doesn't invite me to spend 140 dollars in the theatre(today's price for the upcoming revival ? ) so critics at least play good part in trying to keep your money from going to a wasted evening.;as for the fans : good luck!

  • AH! Fun fact Kiddies! The critic here is the wife of Joe Raposo who created another wack-out musical flop of the 80's the deeply dusturbing Raggedy Ann! I would love to hear her review on that production.

  • What a bitch! Nice shoulder pads...

  • You're full of rage

  • GOD!!! These people are So annoying!! Just because it was based on the same book as a horror film doesn't mean it has to be all about the horror it's allowed to be different as long as the basic plot is the same!

Sure it wasn't perfect but they didn't even mention how beautiful the duets between Carrie & her mother were!!

It focuses on the a withdrawn teenager who feels shunned by the world & by her beliefs and the pressure on ordinary teens to behave a certain way in school. NOT MURDER!

  • PAT COLLINS who was on Boston TV in the 60s.

  • Poor Betty Buckley......you're so much better than this.

  • Carrie The Musical was very bad with the Broadway reviews ugh!

  • wow this is sooo mean. WHY IS SHE SMILING SO MUCH!

  • @helencheddar Because even today, critics are smug as fuck.

  • LOL...annnnd, looks like hospital kitchen. LMFAO

  • "A harrah", indeed. I'd say the more scary thing is that anyone thought it was a good idea. Well... most of the rhymes are at least as scary.

  • 5 star review !!!! THIS MUSICAL SHOULD NEVER EVER HAVE BEEN MADE!!!

  • @moietybaby have you heard the song "and eve was weak"?? it's stunning, it's very Sweeney Todd!

  • ahhh only $50 seats---

  • Heavenly...

  • I know there are many people who love this show, but even looking at this snippet it looks like it was conceived by the same people who put together the musical number from Staying Alive! Those horrible 80's workout clothes and Roller Boogie music. And , I'm sorry, but Debbie Allen is just an incredibly overrated choreographer right down to casting her beloved Gene Anthony Ray from Fame in this! I never liked Ray and they cast him in this? This just had flop written all over it.

  • jesus.

  • is that regis on the other end of the news desk?

  • "The special effects here are straight from Woolworth's"

    LOL

  • What's that???

  • hafta say.....looks like shit lol

  • for its time yes.lol but if it were out today with new moves and music, i think it would do well with the young generation that we have today

  • OMG... that's a horribly ruthless review... lol

  • I'm working on making a revised studio cast album and im gonna cut out for blood and do me a favor. Im just gonna replace it for dialog

  • PAT COLLINS IS SO EXTRA!

My true opinion on this show is that one... yes, choreography was a bit naff. Set was naff. Costumes and special effects were horrendous. However, I have so much faith in the show, I really like the scorebecause some of the tunes are so catchy i.e "In", "Don't Waste The Moon". But then theres the songs that are a bit EURGH like "Wotta Night". I honestly think with the right creative team and a bit of tweaking in the score, the show could FABULOUS.

  • I was there opening night. Reviewed it for my college station. Even Pat Collins was right twice a day.

  • It's pretty hard for me to imagine it being any good. There are things that just don't work: amateurs putting on "Cats" or "A Chorus Line," and now, add to the list, making a musical of a King novel.

  • Man, what a cunt.

  • Ha thats what im saying lol

  • It's true. It sucked.

'Carrie' was NOT meant to be made into a musical, enough said.

Betty Buckley and Linzi did a great job with the shit material they were given... but yeah. That's about it.

  • This review may be harsh, but it seems dead on. I've read quite a bit about Carrie from both fans and haters, and it seems to me that the mixed score, which DOES feature some HORRIBLE stuff, the mistake of costuming and staging that weren't realistic, and the poor handling of the special effects are all accurate. Critics don't get paid to make directors and actors feel good, they get paid to save us money by telling us what to see and what to avoid, and this time, I think she got it right.

  • the score was so not dismal.... ya it was to mixed and the score repeating but if you listen to some of the lyrics their stunning.... this women was WAY to harsh

  • "The special effects here were straight from Woolworths."

The womans attacks at the show were cornier than the show itself.....

When she said the special effects were straight from Woolworths, when the other woman said "Thank you", she was like 'that wasn't even funny, you didn't have to be that mean!"

  • Agreed!

  • i must admit, i have heard about carrie the musical for a long time, but god bless youtube i can finally hear and see numbers from it. ok it is flawed in many areas, sets and costumes, (if that is all, then there is a chance) but some of the music and lyrics r stunning, all it needs is a bit of re working and u have a hit, i mean look at some of the crap that is on stage at the moment!! if it was "ahead of it's time" in the 80's lets give it a re birth in the 00's!!

  • Seriously, this woman has NO idea what she's talking about. At all. Her nasty comments are unnecessary. WHile this production of the show wasn't the best conceived, the material is amazing. And the choreography is perfection. What a nut job this bitch is. Hope she's dead somewhere.

  • The choreography is perfection?! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

  • Were you one of the creators of this show? Wow! To call her a "bitch" and "hope she's dead somewhere" that's a very mature attitude to have towards someone who is giving her OPINION of a show that was was nearly universally panned not only by her, but many many many many (shall I go on?) critics. And I'm with jimjimmy..."the choreography is perfection"...ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Oh, you are too much Jemstar...TOO MUCH! SHE'S a nut job?

  • This is SOOOO funny XD The comertian kind of creeped me out but this is SOOOO funny!!!! I see DEFINATELY why it flopped XD

  • That Cujo comment was unnecessary, but she did have a point about the sets, costumes and choreography, all of which can change from production to production.

  • exactly in london they are making a revival new sets and songs and costumes. I think Carrie the Musical will finally have the fame that which it deserves!

  • This is cool, where did you hear about this?

  • Comment removed

  • THERES NO REVIVAL!!!!!

there are no plans to make a revival and why would it be in london when ALL the writers are american

why lie like that when you cant justify it

if you can prove it i will apologise but you clearly cant!

  • They are workshopping/reviving it and if you don't believe me then fine...

  • "why would it be in london when ALL the writers are american"

The play opened in London, Ryan, you know this.

  • The play did not open in London, it was given a workshop in London, but had no official opening, in fact many people were mad because the London workshop had some public funding and people thought it was crap that public funding should support an out of town tryout for a Broadway show.

  • Pardon me, I was wrong about London, but the show was performed in England before it came to America.

  • Hey, no problem... I guess you'd treat it like a Boston or Philly open, but not an official West End Run. Ironically, the British leg of the show's journey to Bway included Barbara Cook who was almost decapitated during a performance, she played the rest of the run in England and bowed out of her contract. The British events should have been a warning, but to no avail...

  • Every critic seemed to hate the same two songs: "Do Me a Favor" and "Out for Blood". I think, if there ever were a revival, those two songs should be cut, or at least rewritten with better lyrics.

That's just the start of what I'd rework if I were able to.

  • yes but only because the RSC produced it and no one else would touch it, if an austrailan company produced it then it would have been done in australia

  • We already established that, like forever ago...

  • she was kinda harsh. but i do agre with them on the ending part. i dont kknow how they did the end either. but still atleast the show didnt go long to fail even worse

  • this woman doesn't know jack shit about carrie. i feel like socking her.

  • Wow...tickets only cost $50 buck back then....those were the days

  • Carrie was supposed to be so dreadful, so aweful, so horrifically bad that I'm sorry I missed it. Those who were lucky enough to see it and live to tell the tale, said that they wouldn't have missed this train-wreck for the world. I'm sorry I missed it, but then again, I was luck enough to see Dance of the Vampires years later! Sometimes the worst musical imaginable is the best ticket to see!

  • her accent cracks me up "horrah, terrah, outah space"

  • 00:40 OUTAH SPACE!

  • I hope Stephen King's career will survive this review. I mean, the guy's gotta eat. I hope he'll be able to make a living somehow and find success.

  • it did survive the review...and carrie is still one of his most popular novels

  • Thanks for clearing that up. (I was being sarcastic.)

  • hahaha sorry

  • Her descriptions are a bit over the top....."They look like gang members from outer space". ?!?!?!?!?!!

  • I know right? Isn't that how people dresses around her everyday in 1988?

    XD

  • but, was it really the "werhst idear"?

  • i kinda hope cujo does come and kill that bitch!

  • What a bitch! I love her!

PS-- $50 seats? To have those days again...

  • She may be right about the bizarro sets and costumes, but the songs are absolutely amazing and should be Broadway standards by now.

  • I know, the opening number "In" was really good....excpet the Jane Fonda stuff.

  • what is the name of the song that " the gang members from outer space" sing at the beginning of the review?

  • Do Me A Favor

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • well shes right about it being a bad idea for a musical i think: the horror themes, the special effects and all. still i WANT to believe it could work with some serious rewriting because its two things coming together that I love. the review was right about all the high school kids´ songs but still a little unfair because it didnt loose a word on the highlights of the show, which it definately has! (im sure anyone who ever heard "and eve was weak" would agree)

  • The review may be true, but wouldn't you kill to see it??

  • the worst "idear" for a musical?

  • Notice how they purposely use the worst clips out of the show. I bet if she had shown "And Eve Was Weak", it would destroyed her criticism completely. What an absolutely ignorant moron. The clips look as they they were handpicked to look bad.

  • "Ignorant moron"? The whole show was a mess.

  • Carrie was tremendously awful...EVERYTHING about it was awful, minus about 2-3 songs! Her review was dead on, except for the fact she didn't mention that it was like watching two shows. It's like the creators couldn't decide if they wanted a pop-y/80's score (Ensemble) or a more classical sounding one (Carrie + Margaret). There were too many complications with the effects & couldn't be done...it was just a mess.

  • I would kill to see this on broadway today - if only it would have marketed as camp, it would have been a tremendous success....

  • yeah, seriously!

  • Sweeney Todd worked because it was dark. This hyperkientic type of dancing (at the audience) is done by someone with no sensitivity. Why is everything a production number aimed at the ticket holders?

  • Ive never seen the whole thing...but I have listening to it, and I love it. Yes, it does have quite a few flaws...wardrobe was pretty off, the set just wasnt right, and the story lacks enough glue to hold it together. The score was fantastic though. Especially the songs with the Whites singing. The other songs are OK but not "horra"ble. The only one I really hate is "out for blood".

  • Harrah! Lol.

  • Shes a bitch

  • This show looks like it sucked.

  • ahead of its time?? i dont know what time could possibly excepted a steven king novel as a musical but i dont want to see it. the entire concept is horrible. it was a destined faliure not only that, they failed at failing! the whole point of the show was heres a kid who has supernatural powers and they never capitolized on it. and the song out for blood makes me want to kill a kitten not a pig

  • This lady is a moron. What people dont realize is that this show was ahead of its time. Pop musicals were not a thing back in 1988. The people running broadway back then, the critics, were all old people that think shows like Oklahoma are good. It was not handled correctly by terry hands and the sets and costumes were ridiculous, but the show was not complete crap. The performances and choreography were perfect. the score was right on. The book was too ... if only terry hadnt scrapped it all.

  • Wow this lady jsut disses the whole play.

She just keeps going on, and on.

I am like wow damn lady chill out!

  • People who saw thislive don't realise how lucky they were...

  • Amazing, thanks so much for putting this up.

  • Have you heard any other news about their being a revival?

  • It's easy to pass judgment after the fact, which many do about this show. But take it from someone who was there opening night (me). This show wasn't bad, it was god-awful. I'm hardly a theater snob, but the show was a disaster - the sets, score, acting, songs. Its only redeemer being the unparalleled Betty Buckley, who seemed to enjoy a camp factor that even its producers weren't aware of. If only an OCR was recorded. Her voice is a gift for the ages. Other than that, trust me. It was a bomb.

  • You were there on opening night? Did some of the blood really hit the audience during prom scene.

  • fake blood was poured on Carrie in the middle of the stage, so I doubt it.

  • The only reason people now think it's not so bad is because things like Legally Blonde can pass for a good show. I'd say some of the music in Carrie is better than Legally Blonde, but for the most part it's just a great big train wreck. Songs like "Evening Prayers" and "When There's No One" cannot make up for "Wotta Night" and "Out for Blood."

  • You should hear OPEN YOUR HEART and EVE WAS WEAK. There is some good stuff here.

  • And I remember how those boys could dance!!!!

  • @jnewmark41 I've heard the whole show. "Open Your Heart" is okay, and while "Eve Was Weak" is a camp masterpiece, it's by no stretch of the imagination a good song.

  • @DannyHiggs Legally Blonde the Musical is AMAZING. How DARE you dumb it down like that, albiet two years ago but damn I hate you already!!! Ive seen LBTM 30+ times and it was never ONCE not amazing. So much better is the best song in the world!!!!

  • @silenthillmaster755 I'm sorry that my opinion offends you and even more sorry that you could hate someone you've never met because of a difference of opinion on a musical. I'm glad that you enjoyed Legally Blonde. I didn't. It's really as simple as that.

  • @DannyHiggs Opinions are like assholes. Everyone wants to jam theirs in your fa-- nevermind...

  • @rubino83 its not an opinion i have, its fact.

  • @DannyHiggs dont make me play victim here.

  • @silenthillmaster755 I'm not making you do anything. I didn't like Legally Blonde. You did. I think it was crap. You didn't. That's no reason to decide you hate someone. If I hated everyone who had different opinions from mine I'd have very few friends indeed.

  • @DannyHiggs Tell me what was crap about it, maybe i'd feel for you. Becuase to me it was perfect, except Blood in the Water, the only song i didn't really like.

  • @silenthillmaster755 I don't need you to feel for me. I was bored the entire show. Our opinions are different. I don't need to prove to you that I thought it was crap, because I'm not going to change your opinion, nor do I want to. I also don't need to continue this discussion.

  • @DannyHiggs You know saying the only reason people like Carrie is because of bad musicals making it on Broadways these days is rather presumptuous of you... Through my own admitted obsession with this show I have met many others who love it as much as I do... And they are all theatre geeks and thespians... All people who know good theatre from bad... People who love Sondheim... We know what is good, and there is plenty of Good in Carrie... It was just weighted down by the bad

  • @babeandandy I suppose we just disagree. I don't think there's plenty of good. I think there are a few moments of sheer brilliance, surrounded by crap. Don't get me wrong, the musical is dear to me. I love it very much. I just don't think it's all that good. If the revised version makes it past workshop, we'll see if they've fixed it.

  • @DannyHiggs

Oh the revised version is much better... And I definitely think what harmed the show was addition of Debbie Allan... Because suddenly it became all about dance... And of course the direct Terry Hands and his fucked up Greek Tragedy vision...

I just think that what the Composes and Writer had originally was promising, of course needed changed a bit, but it could've been good... Most of the bad songs were added one Debbie Allan came on board... Like Wotta Night... Uuuugh

  • $50 seats? That sounds nice...

  • gotta love Broadway

  • CARRIE was doomed to fail because people already had their minds made up. Why do you think so many people are still fans? There is even an online petition to bring Carrie back to Broadway!

  • where that at? I'd sign it

  • Anything really can be turned into a Broadway musical. It's all about how you go about it. Look at Sweeney Todd! Phantom of the Opera! All done correctly. If they gotten a better choreagrapher, director, and added more to the script, then they would have had a great show because the music is awesome!

  • Seriously...how do you turn something like Carrie into a musical? Sadly, this ended up being the predecessor of every dumb broadway producer's idea of turning every movie franchise into a musical (Legally Blonde? EVIL DEAD?!).
