Hi, Todd, I just have some questions for you. Do you change the amount of strength that you applied on the bow while the bow is moving on the strings? Do you release the strength while you're approaching the frog?
And if you need to play a long beat, and moving too slowly while exerting force on the bow will crust the sound, do you do two different bowings or you reduce the amount of force?
Hope you can help me with my problems. Thanks. Good lesson by the way!
I greatly appreciate these videos and admire your teaching abilities. I live in the Phoenix area and am looking for a teacher. I am a beginner and 40 yrs. old! Do you know of someone in my area to recommend?
Thank you for this video!! I have a few adult students (and younger ones) that have problems with tone and was running into a road block as to how else I could teach it. I know that I can always count on you and your videos for your arsenal of tips, imageries and metaphors on teaching various techniques. Thank you again!!
Thank you so much for these videos. i started playing alto sax and then clarinet and bass guitar. but when i came to violin it was difficult to find a teacher because i live in a very rural area. not a lot of people here and definately not that many into music. my grand mother helped me learn fiddle but a lot of the tones and techniques that are applied to classical violin are not used in fiddle playing. these videos really make the change a lot easier.
Thank you so much for the video! I'm a violinist at UNC and I have the privilege of Studying under Mr. Fuchs! I'm going to take these tips to the Frasier practice rooms, and hopefully I can get Mr. Fuchs off of my case about my tone!
I love these videos :) I gota violin through my high school and a student to do my lessons since my dad didn't want to pay for lessons.. But then I went away for the summer and haven't heard from the student, and plus she has a busy schedule too.. So I'm stuck playing things and figuring things out myself, and these videos have helped me with things :) Luckily I know a person in my school whose played since he was FOUR.. Maybe I can get him to teach mee... Keep up the videoss!
Sir, You're a great teacher.I don't have enough money to go to violin schools. Here, in our country, no school offers scholarship for the poor students to learn violin. What we can't make them understand is. music shouldn't be mixed up with money. And you prove that poor students like us are right.
sir.. i am a violinist too.. do you have any idea what are the techniques in playing classical songs? because I really have a hard time in playing it.. specially the fast part of the piece.. is there any techniques to make it easier or I have just to practice it more and daily?
I would love to see you discuss tone control as you move from up bow to down, or the reverse, while playing softly. How do you end one note and start the next smoothly, without an obvious sharp bow change and sound?
Amazing teacher. I play many instruments: piano and tenor/alto sax (formally taught); and guitar, flute, trumpet, and bouzouki (all self-taught). But I am truly humbled by the violin-one of the most difficult instruments to play. You make it seem attainable. Thanks.
everything seems so simple when you explain it to us :D however I still got problems with bowing straight :( I tried hard to fix it using the techniques you showed in those 3 parts of that lesson , can it be also the bow's hair fault? because some people said that it's synthetic and it slips more easier on the strings than the horse hair would
When you play up high, you need to add a little more weight to the bow to create a full tone. Try pulling a little closer to the bridge and slowing the bow speed down a bit. Good luck!
I'm not so sure that more weight is needed when you play up high. In my experience it's better to keep the weight and bow speed constant whilst moving closer to the bridge.
Thinking about the proportions then this makes sense. If you were playing a 1st position D on the A string with the bow half way between the f'board and bridge, to play the D and octave up on the A, you have halved the string length and should therefore move 50% closer to the bridge whilst keeping everything else the same.
wow!!!! you're amaizing. I just ordered my vilin online, because watching your videos I feel I can begin to learn the basic steps. Later I'll see if I can get a teacher. I love how the violin sounds and always had had the wish to play it, but just watching you I'm totally motivated. Thank you so much. Wonderful job!!
Very good job, you're great, you're helping all the peope that doesn't have money to get a private teacher, here, in brazil, all the privates teachers are expensive...
Hi Professor, I've noticed something about my tone that is bothering me. Ever since I got better strings (Dominants) I've noticed what I can only describe as a "whining" noise from my strings when I play longer notes, especially when I vibrato or have my mute on for late night practicing. I don't hear this noise when I listen to other violins. Is this a product of my bowing or vibrato? Or is it just the product of my instrument? I'm inclined to think it's a technique problem.
I Love this Video and also I checked out your Channel. Very interesting! If you need any help getting this Video and your Channel exposed to were it is top in all the search I found this site called tubeviews.(net) that has took my breath away. I'm working on my 4th Channel now, this one I just made. My Videos are getting so many hits now. Check it out and keep in touch.
Your video is wonderful and a great help. Thank you for sharing your talent. bravo! And also, great way to describe the bow pressure on the string. I never thought of it in those terms (medium boat). Thanks!
OMG Thank you so much. I was wondering why it sounded so scratchy when i played. I can't afford lessons right now so i'm teaching myself and was getting a little frustrated but this help me out a lot. So Thanks again.
I like your explanations because they're very technical. I also like how you're extremely particular about where on the string the bow goes- I tend to think more abstractly and forget to explain the basics. I enjoyed watching this and will probably watch more of them. Is it ok if I point some of my violin friends to your profile?
Hi, I just reviewed this older video. Very helpful. Thanks.

You are a wonderful teacher!
I'm sorta in between violin teachers at the moment,
my reg. is out of state,
and I'm in orchestra
which is helping to develope my skills,
but there are little things I have a hard time doing,
so you just made that loads easier for me.
And question.
When you play higher notes, is it better to put lighter pressure on the bow?
YasashiiMerodii 2 years ago 2
