So many elements came together to make this one of the classic episodes. The comedy is in Sheldon's total lack of social skills, Penny's bottomless well of forgiveness, and the outrageous liberties they can take with each other, but underneath, they really care about each other. Despite Sheldon's cluelessness in comforting Penny, he's making the effort, and it gets through. Watch how much Kaley Cuoco can put into Penny's facial expressions. Classic.
