I guess 80% would be ok. I was following a routine that had me on 80% for doubles for 8 sets. I found that too light, I never tried 80% for 5.
I would suggest try a few weeks on 80% (so about 112kg (about 2-4 weeks) and then another few weeks on 90% (126kg). I can't garuantee anything but, in theory this will help you smash that 140kg single.
It's definately not ok to round when you're doing it with weight. That's a very quick way to put alot of pressure on the spine. I guess you'll just have to practice your mobility at squatting.
After practicing a few weeks you should be able to go down easily into the fullsquat hamstrings on calves with no back rounding or riding up onto toes.
It has to do with the flexibility of the ankles and hips but it's also a learned ability. So work at it, and don't round when you have heavy weight!!
Is it your lower back, or your upper back (around your shoulders)?
My shoulders used to round deep in the hole, but I just kept light for a few weeks and focussed on keeping my shoulders back and chest up and out. It fixed the problem. As for the lower back, I haven't had this problem, but maybe try doing some ab bridges with some extra weight, to help strengthen the core.
As Ausweightlifter says, it depends on if it's upper or lower back. He's given some good advice. Also, If lower back, I would use some "dead bug" ab movements that strengthen the abs with the hips flexed. Also ensure your hips and ankles are loose, if they're not, the adjacent joints pick up the slack, NOT a good idea. If upper back, get the mid erectors, traps, and rhomboids strong and again increase the arch in this area. Avoid ANY type of crunch as it teaches your abs to ROUND the spine!
rednatsyb, you state in a previous thread that you can only front squat 150 x 3 reps after 3 years of training. Here he's doing 155x3. So you said it yourself, you can't do as much. So shut your European pie-hole and work on your front squats.
Cool, that's the gym where I started olympic lifting! I didn't have time to continue there but picked it up again since being back in the states. Good to see you guys on youtube!
Andy, there is a guy called Gary Broomfield that lives down that way and lifts. He's done 101/145 I think. Would have to look him up in the phonebook I guess.

This guy is superflexible. Either get a much wider grip, or cross your arms by touching your shoulders with opposite palms.

Maybe you already did 200kg front squat by now. :) I have done 190kg now, and keep going until I hit 200kg!

Nice..What's a good rep/weight progression for front squats??..i'm stuck at 140kg and i can't seem to get past it..anyone got any thoughts??
aks73 3 years ago
If you are willing to put some time into it try the Russian Squat with front squat as the lift. Worked great for me on regular squats.
secuervo 3 years ago
Maybe find what 90% of 140 is and start doing 5x5 on 90% and each week progress by 2.5-5kg.
This is the same scheme I am incorporating to all my exercises. Mainly squats, pulls, and presses.
AusWeightLifter 3 years ago
That would be 126kg...not sure i can manage 5 sets of 5 with that tho..isn't that a bit high? would 80% be ok?

My back always wants to round a little when really deep. Even if I just squat down with no weight. How do I fix this or is it okay ?

Stas, am I going to have to hit 170 this weekend just so your skinny butt fronting 155 doesn't show up as "related" to my 140 from last week?
StrongmanJoshua 5 years ago
Hahah Joshua! That was filmed soooo long ago, you may have to step it up a little bit more than 170! ;)
I've seen your 140, good squating. Once you get used to the clean position a little bit more, then it's gonna be ON.
