  • now that is some sweet ass tone

  • it s a srv strat 92 with brazillian roswood?

  • There is only ONE SRV, no one will be like in him...

  • ive died and gone to SRV heaven

  • Tommy makes my body ache and my soul scream! If you could see him live......

  • GOD DAMN!!!!!! I almost cried smh lol you have the BEST srv tone I've herd on YouTube PERIOD!...favorited!!!!

  • Amazing!!! Love your playing.

  • Hey bluesfan64! Very nice playing. I could listen to it many times again. But if you dont mind me asking, in what order have you placed your pedals in the chain? I have pretty much the same setup, but im having a lot of problems making my pedals sound right unfortunately. Thanks.

  • don't like your wah pedal, but otherwise it is awesome :)

  • god its the next stevie xD

  • my teeth are clenching

  • what pedals are you using....besides the wah wah

  • just great

  • Nice stuff! What kind of dunlop fuzz face have you?

  • dude you must have a lot of money

  • fucking awsome keep rocking out.dont forget to be ur self though.

  • 3 Words........ butt naked nasty! Your a beast

  • finally somebody who actually KNOWS how to play an srv strat....or any strat for that matter. effin awesome man. love that tone so much

  • id give both left and right

  • that octavio sounds like SHIT, but the rest was pretty good.

  • I just fucking LOVE YA, brotha! Can't wait for the moment I can drink myself into shit with you again! Take care and keep kickin' asses, man!

    -Peti

  • nice guitar!

  • Thats some good tone! Very close to Stevie's!!

  • wow your a sack.

  • Don't believe this idiot, he made up a profile under my name and trying to talk sh*t about me. Block him and Bigshaked too, it's the same guy. Sorry about that.

  • Awesome man great tone

  • texas specials?

  • yes they are. Changed them to Slider's Vintage pickups since then.

  • MAANNN !!! awsome music !

  • Kick ass man, but that guitar isn't beat up enough!

    Rock on,

    -TC4L

  • i'd give my left nut for that tone

  • @McBrideAidy Better say: 'i'd give my left nut for that...way of playing'; the only 'tone' isn`t important if you don't know what to do with the instrument(just what TK does)

  • u got enough reverb, be it natural or digital reverb, loads of it lol

  • How did you get the SRV crybaby "exhaling" sound? you know that Hwhaaa sound.Cause the Jimi Hendrix Crybaby sucks nuts.

  • how?? he gets that sound beacause he can play.. unlike all the other nOObs on youtube..

  • Auto Wah?

  • it's a regular Cry Baby GCB-95 model. Nothing special, no mods. That's me who played this video.

  • absolutely beautiful touch

  • I really enjoy how people just flame each other like crazy. It really doesn't matter what guitar someone's using, what gear they have, or who they're playing like. We all have our heroes and our favorites. As long as they're making music, and that music makes them happy. Why does it matter?

  • One thing people dont realize is that once you put a set of GHS 1300 series strings on a strat in Eb tuning, you wont need a clean boost, it almost overdrives an amp naturally

  • whats you fuzz face setting?

  • Pop has a point!!!

  • Tommy introduces his guitar sound?? Glad to see your being original and all with an SRV signature guitar and 2 tube screamers.

  • Many players are using tubescreamer, SRV strat or Strat with TX specials, cause they're good. In fact my dad is using the same rig too, he's more original than anybody else trust me.... BTW check out some other stuff at teebeeferris channel here on youtube.

  • you're right, I should've thought about that. it's just when I see a guitar with someone elses name on it in huge letters I either think big fan, unoriginal, or both.

you have to admit though, with all those people out there trying to be just like SRV, it's hard to tell the stevie ray vannabies from the players that want the best gear they can have

  • Yeah I see what you mean, there are a lot of players trying to capture Stevie's sound, but like he said tone is in the hands. He was right and nobody can ever be like Stevie was. Keeping his spirit alive is a great thing and very important. That's what he would've wanted from us. This video was made about 3 years ago, since then I've changed the pickguard and pickups on that guitar.

  • Wait, are you the guy in this video?

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Yep, sorry for the confusion. A friend of mine uploaded this video on his channel long time ago. I have some friends who uploaded videos of me. Check out teebeeferris and zkat2 too, they have a bunch.

  • So you are using the tube screamer as clean boost, gain all the way down and level all the way up??

  • Holy fuck are you Stevie? That tone is immense!

  • which pickups are in there?

    thanks

  • "Tommy introduces Stevie's guitar sound"

  • Yea hah

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • bravo great.

  • love it!!! great tone and playing

  • Do you think I plug, in this amp and effects, a common Strat, it'd play in a different way ?

  • Depends on your touch. I'm sure Stevie could sound like the same on any guitars and amps. He said "the tone is in your hands" and he was right.

  • I wonder why the fuzz face and screamer? Anyway sweet tone. I love that guitar.

  • It's exactly what SRV did during live shows towards the end of his life.

  • I know that he used those pedals, and he always used a screamer. I didnt know about the fuzz face. The reason I asked was it seemed liked kind of an overkill to ave a fuzz face and screamer. But anyway... Peace

  • For the most part, Stevie used his Tube Screamer as a clean boost while using a Diaz modified Fuzz Face for dirt.

If your looking for more details about his tone, especially the 'In Step' tone when his guitar really screamed, it is really simple.

Outside of his hands, it was Van Zandt Blues pickups made in Texas, a TS-9 overdrive pedal and as I said, an old Fuzz Face that Cesar Diaz rebuilt after the circuit died. You can find that fuzz tone in a Diaz Texas Square Face Fuzz.

  • What kind of octavia is that?

  • the second he turns the octavia on while sustaining the one note, makes me want to be SRV even more.

  • What kind of octavia were you using?

  • Awesome

  • I'm sure you've noticed it doesn't sound exactly like SRV or Hendrix. And this not be what he meant but the fact that everyone has their own sounds (fingers have a 'hand' in creating a sound as well) means that it's his sound although inspired by those guitarists.

  • I thought that the SRV initials were black on that guitar. Where did you get the white ones?

  • TommyK....you got it mate .....beautiful sound !

    Keep posting !

  • Absolutely beautiful man!

  • Hey Tommy, nice sound here, i like your playing ofc too ;), what octavia are you using? And are you using 2 TSers? or just 1? Thanks!

    KHJ

  • Hey!!you're great!! What pickups do you use? Tanks

  • The pickguard does not look authentic, is it aftermarket or some sort of import guitar?

  • Mayer ia shit compared to SRV.

He will never be near to SRV's level and league. He is just an amateur and a school boy compared to SRV!

  • of course, grga. i already know your opinion on the matter. you've already left thousands of comments expressing it. i'll say it one more time, Stevie had respect for all musicians, and if he were alive today, i'm sure he wouldn't appreciate your bullshit.

  • dude its hailarious look up any video of like strat blues/rock players and this fuck stick grga888 has picked fights with so many people but all he does is say the same thing, regardless of the argument

  • He's an orthodox Stevie fan, don't worry about him. I am too :) but I appreciate Mayer's work. Of course Stevie is the legend and no one ever will be like him. I don't like to compare players, everybody's different.

  • fine but i am a lifleong SRV fan as well and you dont see me going around comment pages on like fifty videos and shoving my opninions down everybodys throats...

  • that's true

  • long live stevie

    love this

  • as much as i hate to agree with daviesm001 (because hes clearly a douche), youre playing SRV's signature strat with heavy gauge strings, and jimi hendrix's basic pedal setup (minus tubescreamer). anyone who knows dick about electric guitar is going to see right through that.

youre good though. keep it up.

  • dude..badass. love the axe.

  • hey man are the letters "srv" normally filled in white? cause everytime i see a signiture strat its just a white outline of the letters. mabey its the pickguard shipping cover? because i like it alot more with the white fillin lol. iono stupid question.. i posted this on another vid

  • No, the letters are not normally filled with white. Maybe his SRV is an old version? The new versions only have an outline as you say yourself.

  • wow i hate strats but I love ur sound

  • Very groovy riffs. I liked it.

  • oh my god tha signature and those pedals they really give you the tone

  • Smokin !

  • what a great talent wasted on copying SRV... GET YOUR OWN SOUND.

  • Let me translate what daviesm001 is trying to say. HOLY SHIT you play awesome, I wish I could play half as good as you. I really suck at playing guitar and you SOOO rule over me. Thank you and continue to post more videos

  • Wrong, what I'm trying to say is: what a great talent wasted on copying SRV... GET YOUR OWN SOUND.

  • i agree that players should try to find their own thing. but then again, this is what he wants to play. so if it makes him happy, so e it. but he wont get anywhere sounding like someone else. sounding influenced is one thing. SRV was influeneced a lot by albert king. but he still had his own style. so id say if he wants to get somewhere musically he should find his own sound. but if he's just doing it for fun, i guess theres no harm done.

  • Who the fuck are you to judge what he does? If he wants to play SRV, he plays SRV. The music snobs are amusing to read at first, but it gets tiring real fast.

  • man its becoming harder to get ur own distinctive sound... i mean there only so many differnt kinds of styles in blues before someone is going to say OMG YOU SOUND LIKE WHATS HIS FACE. you know lol.. man i love stvie and his sound and im always gettin licks from him.

  • I'm having that same problem bro!

  • I wish John Mayer Fan boys would realize that about Mayer. But Most Mayer fans don't even know who SRV is! And I am not being sarcastic either, go to a Mayer concert and ask a Mayer fan to name 5 SRV songs, you will be lucky if they name two!

  • i think you'd be surprised, pal. Mayer is a great guitarist who just happens to be a huge fan of Stevie, and yes, is obviously influenced a great deal by him, just as Stevie was influenced by Jimi before him.

i understand you're clearly bitter about something to bring him into this discussion for no reason, but lay off of the guy. i'm sure Stevie would have the utmost respect for him if he were still around.

  • Correction, Mayer fan girls, not boys!

  • Hey im a Mayer fan boy! lol

  • Holy shit - that is some tone

  • what equipment are you using?

    ty

  • Is that a joke? Look in the description! Jesus Christ.

  • Oh thats your tone huh? I thought Stevie

    "introduced" it already.

  • amazing playing, amazing shirt,

  • Great sound, truly, very close to SRV, extraordinary frequences with the wah

  • Wow.. Is it the Fuzz Face that makes you sound like Mato Nanji from Indigenous?

  • great job man. did you fill in the engraving with white?

  • holy crap thats the best SRV tone ive heard anyone replicate.

    nice

  • I think you may appreciate this... You have more of a Hendrix tone because you play from your wrist (not arm). Nice Playing!

  • I honestly doubt you can hear that. If you think you can, you're fooling yourself. Playing from the wrist or elbow does not make a difference in tone. He sounded like Hendrix because of the Fuzz Face. He mostly sounded like SRV because of the licks he was playing.

  • Wrong! I CAN hear that. And, if you can't; you're either inexperienced, or (if you've been playing for a long time); you should give it up. Most of a players tone comes from the way they play - not their equipment.

Good luck in your quest for tone.

  • The change in picking may change how rapidly he can play, but it is possible that it will not change the angle at which the pick hits the string or the speed at which the pick approaches the string. I'm sure you can't see it in the video, and there's no way to know (especially from person to person) without close personal observation including the use of expensive equipment. There are too many variables involved to come to a conclusion like you did.

  • i know what your trying to say "analogshoes". picking from the arm like srv did makes it tons more agressive and changes the sound becuase the attack on the strings is different. either way sounds well and both players used both techniques when they felt necessary.

  • sorry bro you're definately wrong i've been playing less than 2 years and i could tell the difference. Nice ear analogshoes :)

  • "Most of a players tone comes from the way they play - not their equipment."

I would QUITE strongly disagree with that

  • haha, eric tessmer band t-shirt...that's not your band is it. cuz if it is you're crazy sick, not that this video isn't...i dont know what it is about texas man. You guys can play.

  • great video! and love that sound of the octavia!

  • Great tone! By far the best SRV tone I've heard (besides the man himself!)

  • Tommy K Jr. Hey I think I saw you play with Wes Jeans once at Deep Ellum Blues?? I can't see your face in this vid. I have that same guitar, I put a red tortiose pickguard on it and people thought it was a John Mayer strat, so then I beat it all up. :) Good Tone. I've got a blackface Vibrolux and I can't get that twangy bridge pickup tone your getting. Must need more treble?? Later!

  • I've seen A LOT of guitar videos but this is one the the rare GOOD ONES!!! 5 STARS!

  • Bravo!

Very good sound. I like so much.

  • Hey man, just wanted to say that you are awesome! I created this account just so I could post here, but what I was really hoping is that you could post a short video of your SRV sig strat, I only got my hands on one once for about ten minutes and someone bought it out of my hands, i almost cried, haha. Now I want to order one but Id really like to see a profile of the frets, I dont remember how big they were. Also tell us what year it is and what you think of it..

  • Hey Tommy, I was wondering if your fuzz face is the Dunlop Blue Jimi Hendrix Fuzz face or just a normal Red Fuzz Face?

By the way, you play good!

  • amazing playing, amazing shirt,

  • What gauge do you use for strings ? .11's or .13's like Stevie did? I have one of these strats on order and i'm just wondering if it would be too much of a shock to the neck to use /12's or .13's on a brand new fender.

  • fenders were designed to take heavy gauges. sounds like this kid is using wimp gauges tho.

  • .011-.052 :) that's heavy enuff. After 3 gigs sometimes my fingers are tired.

  • Right. How high is the action?

  • Not as high as Stevie's, but enough high for me. :) I don't know exactly, I didn't measure it. It depends on your fingers.

  • fair play man. i was being harsh your tone is good. would sound better if you cleaned it up and lost the reverb though.

  • Ah, so easy to be a critic yet so hard to be a player. This kid rocks!

  • was it mostly half step tuning?

  • takes a while for people to get use to heavy gauges, you can't tell me you started with 11's straight away or something, and plus he probably just bought the guitar and most fenders today comes with 9's and i don't know if this is just me but i rather not waste strings

  • i like jimi hendrix part

  • Hey Tommy, I saw you answering some questions in here...I was wondering if that is the SRV strat with Pau Ferro or Rosewood? Also, just wanted to tell you you're badass...such an inspiration.

  • Thanks a lot! My SRV Strat has pau ferro fretboard.

  • dude you gotta come at montreal(canada) to do a show at the jazz festival please!!!!

  • I'd really love to come! If you have a contact to somebody at the festival, please let me know! Thanks a lot!

  • im gonna do my best cuz it would be fuckin great to see you live!!!

  • i am focking gonna buy the tube screamer

  • Damn Sweeet! Excellent!!! :D

  • Excellent playing!

  • pick up is texas special??

  • Yes.

  • but you are vintagetom??

  • no :) it's Tommy Katona. Vintagetom is my friend , check out his profile. Type vintagetom in the searching line.

  • oh sorry, thanks i understood now..sorry for confusion...ah ah..you play with touch and soul !!

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Doesn't everyone "copy" the tone of their favorites? I love this style, tone and playing. I wish I sounded this good. Keep it up!

  • I love it, keep it up man

  • Man you freakin'n'n make that guitar rock! I also like how you wah'd it with the tone control. Super!

  • im sorry to say it but your not introducing this guitar tone your copying it

  • wow, you're such a wise guy! Man, that's how sounds a Stratocaster with a tube Fender amp and some pedals! Have you heard about influences? How about Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Doyle Bramhall II, Philip Sayce, John Mayer, Jesse Davey, Wes Jeans and the others? They're all can sound a bit like SRV. What is the problem with that? It's not copy. You better learn from this guy little boy.

  • i agree.

  • VERY well put.

  • I would have a tone pretty close to this, considering my red hot blues pickups,but...I have put the wrong strings on the wrong Guitars,10-54's on the Jag-Stang,9-46's on the strat.I need some 12's for the strat,or at least some skinny top heavy bottoms.Oh BTW,Earnie Ball strings are boss. And dragonfire pickups (ebay, look them up you wont be disapointed) are amazing.

  • Cool, are they stock TX specials in the Strat?

  • Yes, they are.

  • They work really well with that amp. Great playing.

  • Thanks a lot man!

  • I LIKE

  • Very nice Bro

  • IS this an Improv?

    Are you playing on scales?

    How old are you?

    Haha tell me everything..

  • Great!!! No other words!

  • yo you play preety good for a youngbuck who taught you all that old skool blues techniq

  • what kinda of wah. ? and i dig the tone. you need thicker strings though i use 12's try out 11's those arent bad at all

  • crybaby

  • thanks dog i use a vox

  • 13s are the way to go

  • dang need some 13's

  • I know :)

I need huge hands like Stevie's too...

  • me too.

  • string gauge?

  • D'addario .011-.049

  • It sounds great Tommy, but is this clip with the Cesar Diaz mod on or off?
