@351441. I drove many 262's back in the 70's. They were all 220's, with the 42 horsepower Air Research Turbo added on to them. They would---in many cases, hang in well with a stock 335 Cummins, which was the big gun at the time. A good 262 in a KW, 2-- 4 speeds or a 5 and 3 speed, and you got right on down the road. But the sound of a 275 has not been outdone.
I'm not into these type of vehicles but I'm glad you guys put these up. I want to know more about them. I have one question tho. Why do people supercharge these things?
The old 275 was a real hot engine in it's day. Cummins had made quite a leap up to attain the 275 horsepower. Bear in mind that there were still countless 150's and even more 200's still running every day, so to have a 2-- "6 bits" as they were called, with that wonderful back-drop exhaust manifold, you were king of the hill. These old KW's looked pretty good back then, all painted up, and clean, with a 275.
@brucew44guns the iron lung cummins were built up to 335 hp. about the same time, cummins started offering the turbo on the 743 in. motors, this was the 262 Cummins.
If the intake system is causing the high idle it must urgently be sealed as these old engines are made for a much lower RPM. But must admit that it is a nice truck anyway
Actually the design sort of pre-dated the flat nosed cabover. Dunno about in the case of this one, but I've heard other models referred to as bubble-noses, albeit with less pronounced "noses".
@2253benjamin as i understand it... air is one of the components of the fire triangle: more air - more fire, more fire - bigger explosion, bigger explosion - higher revs... (im no mechanic tho)
@2253benjamin More air = more potential for combustion. In diesels, without more fuel, it's limited to more complete combustion of the fuel supplied. This can make more power and move the pistons faster, making more RPM.
However, why do you think this is a case of more air being supplied? A leak in the intake might mess up the vacuum into the combustion chambers, supplying less air and making it run rich, which would make the engine have to turn faster to suck in enough air to keep running.
@djkillcrazy theres no vacuum in a diesel.the only way a diesel speeds up is iff you add fuel.theres no lean rich anything in a diesel.Richer=faster rpm leaner slows them down.
@djkillcrazy the engine in this truck utilized the cummins pt fuel system. 2 things will make this engine run fast at an idle. 1, there might be a suction leak in the fuel system between the fuel tank and the fuel pump Air in the fuel will cause the older cummins to idle fast, and also to hang up in the rpm in between gears during a gear change. 2, it could be caused by the linkage between the fuel pedal and the pump itself. If it's adjusted to tight,or bound up in some way,it causes fast idle
man cabovers suck. they suck to work on look like shit and are allways poorly maintained. on that note most cabover drivers are douches because they think they are the coolest rod on the road. i fix them everyday and i hate them so much only good part is i can pull the tranny in less than fifteen minutes
@bgpmp16 HUH? coolest rod on the road? I never felt that when I drove Cabover. mainly what I felt was pain. the ride killed my back. Where are you that there are enough Cabovers still in service that you fix them everyday? I would'nt mind having an old 60's model cabover for a show truck, but for working I'll stick to my conventional.
rare to find bull nose kw last i have seen any of these for trucks were in alabama on the side of the road for sale there were 4 or 5 of them for sale
@mrclean73 Probably never again. It's not very aerodynamic. Today it's all about fuel economy and emissions, which both the truck and the motor cannot accomplish in today's standards. You could probably get the motor emissions legal with the technology we have, but the truck will definitely be a no.
it's too bad more of these aren't preserved, Id love to see more of these old rigs, not on the roads maybe, but at shows and things... for that matter, Canada is a bad place to be to see old trucks I think, I need to go to the heartland of America where trucking was born maybe
Saw a video, SUPERCHARGED 220 CUMMINS WITH SPLIT MANIFOLD. Did some company make a dual outlet exhaust manifold for N.A and supercharged engines? Would make it sound like a v6 instead of inline. Someone said Ellis made one, couldn't find it. INFORMATION ANYONE_THANKS.
You had to have the supercharger on the 2 stroke DEEtroit, wouldn't run without it, later on they put a turbo on it, but still had the supercharger too.
@DGillyy on the 92 series detroit diesels, they incorporated a damper on the intake system, allowing the turbo boost to bypass the blower altogether at max turbo boost pressure, because the engine actually got more air that way.
Hey you dont need to tell me my man, i work for cummins, on a gasser i would prefer a supercharger but still the most efficient engines diesel or gas all have turbos. And you can get good torque with a turbo, odviously not what a supercharger can provide on the same engine, but at the same time your going to lose top end power, but thankfully on diesels that doesnt really matter, their all about the grunt
@foxriderkx250f what? are you talkin bout modified pullin tractors or like deeres that come from the factory new? im askin cause ive never heard of a factory supercharged engine made by deere i any tractor. jw thanks

Hotrodx......you sure come up with some Great videos......I had the good
fortune to actually drive one of these "beasts" in my early years of trucking back in 1966....in the summer, between my jr. & sr. yr at Tech. Thank
you for the Great memories.....of course, you "know" me from comments on other postings....and to me the Only thing to make this truck "better"...would be a 12v71 DD with 8" straight pipes set to 2850rpms !
Why thank you. Yeah i definitely know you from other videos and you do post some great info. A 12v71 would be pretty cool in this, it should make some racket turning that many rpms hehe. The first thing i would do is get a chrome 5" stack. This has a 4" stack which sounds ok but the 5" sounds a little more heavy sounding and not so high pitched.
Back in the '90's a guy run one a truck similar to this one, only it was maroon. It was also restored and ran northern California regularly I think hauling lumber.
It was always parked at the 76 in Redding (Knighton Road).
I wish I had money, i'd by my mom her own truck, an older one with a sleeper on it:) she'd Love that! But the down side is I figure an older truck would cost more in upkeep wouldn't it:(....But there sooooooooooo Cool!
Thats sound amazing! Supercharged so it gets enough air right? Their arent any superchargers for diesel engines that are ment for added boost are their..
Actually these didn't work like the detroit diesels where they are required to have a blower in order to run. i belive these add boost to them. The 250 is an exact same thing as this except it is not supercharged.
The only diesels that i know were superchagred were the 275/320 cummins. The rest such as 220's and 250's were with no charger. They made turbos for the 220s and 250s but all they really did was clear the smoke, they didn't bring the EGTs down much. the 220 with a turbo was a 262 and a 250 with a turbo was a 280.
Thanks man! When you say 220, 250, 275 Cummins is that the hp for that specific Cummins engine or the code Cummins used for those engine? Also why do commercial diesel engines usually only get their hp openly advertsied and not torque, because its the torque that matters. Ive never gotten a straight answers, thanks!
Those are in HP. The 220s and 262s were 743 cubic inches and the 250s, 275s and 320s were 855 cubic inches. And im not sure why they mainly advertise horsepower and not torque.
actually i was just told this, but the 250 and the 280 were the only 855 cubic inch ones. The 275, 320, and 220 were 743 cubic inches. The 275 and the 320 had blowers on them.
When ever a driver refrers to an engine as a Cat 500 or Cummins 750 KT etc we allway refer to the HP rating, Or else thaty will refer to it as a B model CAt or C model etc, but normally when referencing a truck engine its using the horse power rating.. Also as a saide note those dragsters you see with that big blower sitting on top of the engine, well i've driven Older Detriot Diesle engines with that blower set up on it.. It was re designed to work on gas engines for more power in drag racing
that you see on all the Fuel motors in drag racing......other than being of the roots design...have absolutely nothing in common with the smaller 6 & 8-71 types you see on the gas powered cars...and the Top Alhohol Class motors' blowers have nothing in common with the roots, internally other than [basically] the case...and the output side on the bottom is at the rear.......
......cont'd, because the Alhohol engines need such huge amounts of air, they've refind the Lysham design to
the point where it can be used on "small" engines.....Lyshams [also known in laymans slang as a "screw"
blower] actually compress the air before exiting the case.....unlike the Roots, which only "moves" air...so "supercharging" is created by putting more air in the manifold than exiting..so "boost" results from backpressure rather than compression.
really power adding....especially in the torque dept......and the sound of a Lysholm is unmistakable. A centrifigal can work.....but, great care needs to be
taken in choosing the right "size" and drive ratio.....same as in turbo matching
A / R ratios to engine displacement and
rpms.....I've seen more homegrown setups that failed because of that....gas
and diesel both...money wasted w / wrong pairings.
Im thinking of putting a blower on my 6,2 chevy diesel, I wonder does it need some form of boost regulation or does it just pump full pressure all the time?
There is a video on here where a guy did it to a 6.5 marine engine.. I'll try and find it and send it to you...
as far as the "boost" goes it's all about the pulley size,, they don't hardly do anything at idle but you may want some sort of limiting device like a BOV..
and the 6.2's compression is rediculous at 21.5;1, new pistons are sold that bring it to 16.5:1, thats what I would do before I stuck a supercarger on,, the 6.2s were normally aspirated anyway,,,
safest bet would to take a 6.5 that was a turbo motor in the first place because their static compression is lower than the N/A 6.2L although the little turbo wasn't worth much and they weren't intercooled either,,
BTW fellow G.M fan... 7qts of oil isnt enough.. change it earlier than scheduled.
Hotrodx.....Hello again...just for trivia...there was, in fact a 250 with a two lobed roots (straight cut, not helical) blower on it....it was known as
a Super 250 but its ci displacement was upped to 902ci......ironically, the same ci as the newer ISX Cummins. My dad had one in an Oshkosh that he used for plowing snow with.
The best sounding cummins out there. Nothing and i mean NOTHING can beat the good ol sound of a supercharged cummins. today's engines they have to offer dont have much engine noise. Some do, but most of them sound like a F-35 taking off because of the turbos they have.
these trucks sound remotley like a 318 detroit when going throught the gears some of my friends old army trucks have the old 275 cummins with backdrop manifoldes
I love that offset rear window.

85raminator......they are, more efficient than positive displacement type blowers...
like the roots....but, mostly because of
Zero parasitic loss in terms of driving it, over a centrifigal or roots type......but,
the roots type can do one thing in spades...that a turbo...cannot do.....and it's the same reason it is so prevelant
among drag racing, both on land and water....they create BRUTE TORQUE !!
Turbos = hp, but little torque increase.

I wish I had money, i'd by my mom her own truck, an older one with a sleeper on it:) she'd Love that! But the down side is I figure an older truck would cost more in upkeep wouldn't it:(....But there sooooooooooo Cool!

We have a 1958 Mack we call the Time Machine. It's pure silver inside.

Thats sound amazing! Supercharged so it gets enough air right? Their arent any superchargers for diesel engines that are ment for added boost are their..
Xx69roadrunnerxX 3 years ago
Actually these didn't work like the detroit diesels where they are required to have a blower in order to run. i belive these add boost to them. The 250 is an exact same thing as this except it is not supercharged.
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
Ahh..okay. So some diesel were supercharged before turbos became commonplace then?
Xx69roadrunnerxX 3 years ago
The only diesels that i know were superchagred were the 275/320 cummins. The rest such as 220's and 250's were with no charger. They made turbos for the 220s and 250s but all they really did was clear the smoke, they didn't bring the EGTs down much. the 220 with a turbo was a 262 and a 250 with a turbo was a 280.
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
Xx69roadrunnerxX 3 years ago
Those are in HP. The 220s and 262s were 743 cubic inches and the 250s, 275s and 320s were 855 cubic inches. And im not sure why they mainly advertise horsepower and not torque.
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
Thanks for sharing!
Xx69roadrunnerxX 3 years ago
actually i was just told this, but the 250 and the 280 were the only 855 cubic inch ones. The 275, 320, and 220 were 743 cubic inches. The 275 and the 320 had blowers on them.

K, thanks!

Royalhighlander 3 years ago
Just so you know.....the roots blowers
that you see on all the Fuel motors in drag racing......other than being of the roots design...have absolutely nothing in common with the smaller 6 & 8-71 types you see on the gas powered cars...and the Top Alhohol Class motors' blowers have nothing in common with the roots, internally other than [basically] the case...and the output side on the bottom is at the rear.......
TurbinePower69 2 years ago
......cont'd, because the Alhohol engines need such huge amounts of air, they've refind the Lysham design to
the point where it can be used on "small" engines.....Lyshams [also known in laymans slang as a "screw"
blower] actually compress the air before exiting the case.....unlike the Roots, which only "moves" air...so "supercharging" is created by putting more air in the manifold than exiting..so "boost" results from backpressure rather than compression.
TurbinePower69 2 years ago
100% correct,,
I still want to put a Lysholm on a 5.9Cummins!!!!
there is a video on here somewhere
where a fella used a centrifugal and
of course it ran out of breath at high rpms,
TheDieselDr 2 years ago
TheDieselDr......The Lysholm would be
really power adding....especially in the torque dept......and the sound of a Lysholm is unmistakable.

I'm helping SteelKahuna with some tech
support he is trying to put a twin turbo setup on a 3408 and do it all under 2200 RPM,
I'm very familiar with compressor A/R
ratios and turbine sizing..
& it blows my mind that some of these guys think they have to spin a little ISB to
5000+ RPMs
I want to set mine up to be done by 2450 RPM,, and be making boost at idle
I laugh at the people that sit in Drive and get their torque converters god knows how hot to "spool" the turbos,, FOOLS!!
TheDieselDr 2 years ago
Im thinking of putting a blower on my 6,2 chevy diesel, I wonder does it need some form of boost regulation or does it just pump full pressure all the time?
KapteinOpel 2 years ago
There is a video on here where a guy did it to a 6.5 marine engine.. I'll try and find it and send it to you...
as far as the "boost" goes it's all about the pulley size,, they don't hardly do anything at idle but you may want some sort of limiting device like a BOV..
TheDieselDr 2 years ago
and the 6.2's compression is rediculous at 21.5;1, new pistons are sold that bring it to 16.5:1, thats what I would do before I stuck a supercarger on,, the 6.2s were normally aspirated anyway,,,
safest bet would to take a 6.5 that was a turbo motor in the first place because their static compression is lower than the N/A 6.2L although the little turbo wasn't worth much and they weren't intercooled either,,
BTW fellow G.M fan... 7qts of oil isnt enough.. change it earlier than scheduled.
TheDieselDr 2 years ago
Hotrodx.....Hello again...just for trivia...there was, in fact a 250 with a two lobed roots (straight cut, not helical) blower on it....it was known as
a Super 250 but its ci displacement was upped to 902ci......ironically, the same ci as the newer ISX Cummins. My dad had one in an Oshkosh that he used for plowing snow with.

i love them old kennys good soundin truck
peterbiltexd 3 years ago
The best sounding cummins out there. Nothing and i mean NOTHING can beat the good ol sound of a supercharged cummins. today's engines they have to offer dont have much engine noise. Some do, but most of them sound like a F-35 taking off because of the turbos they have.
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
Your right there, I like the distinct sounds of the older engines, not the ones where all you hear is the turbo scream
Dave7060 3 years ago
these trucks sound remotley like a 318 detroit when going throught the gears some of my friends old army trucks have the old 275 cummins with backdrop manifoldes
peterbiltexd 3 years ago
They do sound cool.
