@kickthemothproject I agree with you and I thought the same for a while until I saw him play live and just then it finally sunk in... this is THE BEST tone that cuts through the bass and drums mix like a hot knife through butter. It is weird to think that someone like Steve Morse has no ears for tone, but it's his long experience playing live that led him to settle with this 'ugly' tone. After trying to get close to this "torn speaker cone" tone, I had the best results with my POD X3 Live.True!
I saw this guy with his aged guitar and aged appearance and I was like, "Not another "amazing" old blues player" Then he played and I started bowing xD
So many pickups. It most probably is a triple in the bridge / single / humbucker with 5 way and postion 2 being the added single to the bridge humbucker only.
I got the standard 5way but do like to use the inbetween 1-2 and 4-5 to get the singlecoils of humbuckers. So much so I would love to get a 7way switch! Although position 2 splitting the bridge humbucker + the middle is shit so I would replace that one.
@amathew711 I've seen him live twice and watched most of his Youtube stuff, I think he is an incredibly unique musician with a recognizable sound and a nice attitude.
I have no idea what he is saying. All i know is that since I was 13 years old and I saw them at the Roxy in Hollywood, I have been listening to music the way it sounds in my head. No one else has done that for me in my life. I love Steve and I am grateful that he is in my life. Oh and by the way. Being a veteran of well over 40 shows I can assure you that guitar is well worn from road use!
Steve is playing his signature model from Musicman Ironically called the Steve Morse model lol. The pickups are: HSSH - DiMarzio (neck to bridge); Humbucking - DP-205 Morse Signature; Single coil - DP-108 Vintage; Single coil - Proprietary custom wound; Humbucking - DP-200 Morse Signature
I love when he says you can sweep pick and use pull offs to play the riff if you don't have monstrous picking chops. Actually, that's how the mortals would play it!!!
lets just hope there isn't a coil tap otherwise he's got 6-8 guitars in one.... guessing two three way selectors or maybe two volume knobs... so many possibilities regardless he's one of those people guitar hero kids need to hear as this guy was a huge influence on John Petrucci amongst very many others.
Pay attention children, this guy is the real deal. Check out that pickup config! I'd like to know how the switch activates which combination. I have never seen an angled single coil in the middle with another single straight. Very cool. It's a Music Man, Me thinks...
I just checked it out. Wow. Did he have NASA wire it up? Good Lord. Complicated doesn't do it justice. Very clever though. I bet the tonal variations are limitless. Thanks for the info.
@sixstringfretter It's a music-man, looks like an older modified Silhouette Special model. The 5 way switch probably does traditional strat switching between 3 of the pickups, and the single switch is probably the on/off for one of the pickups.
@sixstringfretter hi- you can find the schematics for that guitar if you go to the music-man website and find the link to Steve's sig. guitar- there is a link for "diagram and schematics" in the lower right corner
@sixstringfretter I have one of these guitars and can tell you how it works. The blade switch is a three way - in the down position it activates the bridge humbucker; in the middle the neck humbucker, and in the up position the straight single coil. The two way switch (beneath the angled single coil) turns on the straight single coil, adding it to whatever is selected on the 3 blade. The 3 way switch adds the angled single coil or turns on the angled single coil exclusively. 11 settings in all.
@beeroosterm I'm sorry, I was incorrect on the settings (it's late and I'm tired) The two way switch beneath the angled single coil adds the BRIDGE humbucker to whatever else is selected - not the straight single coil.
@beeroosterm While this Music Man Steve Morse signature guitar has the ability to achieve 11 different pickup combinations, Steve uses 5 settings almost exclusively: 1) Bridge alone 2) Neck alone 3) Bridge/straight single coil 4)Neck/straight single coil 5) Bridge/Neck. He also uses the straight single coil by itself to achieve clean ringing tones at distorted amp settings by switching to it exclusively and then rolling the volume way down. The angled single coil is used for weird rhythm stuff.
@XAlphaZEROX Yeah, I researched it myself as well. Thanks for the info though. In my research, I found out how much this guy actually does. I just thought he was Ritchie Blackmoore's replacement in Deep Purple. Wow, this guy is all over the friggin' map! Country, blues, classical...you name it. I have a much deeper respect now of Steve. I watched him playing Bach Third Brandenburg on a accoustic. He's got it.
@sixstringfretter yeah it is a music man. and a killer one at that. the humbuckers set in the bridge and neck are passive while the two single coils in the middle are battery powered like emg's. i'm not sure if there emg's or not though. they have one down at the local music shop where i live and steve morse came to play so the guitar is set up just how steve likes it. if i had the money i'd buy t haha!
What are they asking for it? I have been eyeing the Petrucci model for some time now. If it's close to the same price, I may just go for it. The tonal range this thing must have is off the charts. I would love to find one so I can sit down with it for 10 or 11 hours (haha)
@sixstringfretter oh man, buy the petrucci. the petrucci is great for anything. they want about 1300 for the morse. they have like six petrucci's at our local music store, and they're all set up perfect. if i had 2000 i'd buy the petrucci asap.
@sixstringfretter well it kinda depends what you're looking for to play... if you're in a dream theater cover band choose the JP, if you're going for versatility go for the Morse ;) hehe
@sixstringfretter yeah its his signature monster.. played it, loved it. but needed something like lukathers model.. but this is probably gonna be my next guitar.. anyway, you can go to the mm site and look at the specs.. it is too complicated to explain :)

@videomoviedvd hahahah Govan would like to have the Morse talent's. In addition, of all the tributes that Govan makes, Guess who's missing?
Govan= shit shredder without taste.
Morse= The most complete guitarrist and spiritual musicians in the world.
Govan, Satch, Vai, Gilbert, Sfogli etc etc... never will belong to Morse's school, and they know that

Yes, @PopTodd, to me Steve's attitude and generosity are as much a reason to be a fan as his awesome musicianship...
mhoyleable 5 months ago
Met this guy back in 1986 when I was 16, at a NAMM show in Chicago.
He was incredibly nice and generous with his time -- more than he needed to be.
And, you hear that metronome? That was his piece of advice to this neophyte guitarist -- always practice with a metronome!
Great advice.
Steve, if you see this: thanks so much for being so cool to me when I was a kid.
I'm still playing.

@sixstringfretter I got a Music Man Steve Morse Signature myself and the pickup setup is like this:
Pickups : 1=Bridge, 2= single #1 , 3 : single # 2 , 4 :Neck
the 3 ways slide switch(from R to L) : 1, 4,2
Far right switch (3 ways) : Down = 3 is off , center =add 3 to current pickup selection, Up = 3 only
Left switch : Up : does nothing , down : add 1 to selection
I hope you understand, it's not an easy way to explain it ;)
11 combinations...and an awesome ax!
