  • hi use c clamps instead of vice grips

  • I like the easy and 'understandability' nature of the above clip, however I does seem slightly 'hap-hazard' and even dangerous! my reason for this thought is: without a pressure release valve the the above could easily become an exploding bomb.

However if the temperature is monitored! then 'no problem' BUT most people tend to be stupid about these things! (i.e. never reading the small 'print' type of attitude) hence my slightly negative comment.

  • I'm doin a shit load of research and your's looks good but a 20' worm is what comes up most (i wonder if it matters). Also why don't you (or anyone else for that matter) use a thumper? It looks easy to make and from what i've read it's very importent?

  • @HiLTonOlogy

so how much would it cost for every thing for the mash

  • HELP!

I am interested in making my own homemade "brew" and i need to know a lot more before i start so nothing goes wrong.lol..such as...can it blow up?.does it give off an odor?(if so is it really bad or not to bad).is it safe?(if i use everything you have the same way).how much would it cost?.how do you bend the copper tube into a coil?.im using a sprit recipe from DairyNZ replacing his still with yours is that safe? will it work?.i may have a few more Q's just cant think of em all now Thanks

  • Direct heat applied to any solution with alcohol is not safe. Indirect steam is much safer, will not burn the bottom of the vessel and is easier to control.

Methanol is the prime distillate that you want to toss out and is lethal (causes blindness) and it should never be monitored by volume - the boiling temperature of methanol is much lower than ethanol so you want to monitor the vapor temperature just prior to the condenser.

  • To coil your tubing nice and neat without kinks or flat spots, crimp one end, fill the tubing with silica sand completely full and crimp the open end. Get down on the floor and roll it around a piece of pvc pipe or something other rigid material. Perfect coil. Bend it how you want it on the ends then cut and empty sand. You want downhill flow with no valleys in steam path or it will surge and burp when collecting. Rubber doesn't like ethanol. PTFE or 100% silicone for aquariums.

  • Nice ALUMINUM RIVETS on pot and lid handles....maybe you should seal around them with 100% silicone..

  • does this device actually work?

  • @brotherboy77 Yes it works. It's not a practical setup if you plan to make a lot of shine at one time. This is basically a still for personal use only.

  • OMG it got ethanol in it.... LOL!

  • Dose anyone know how long it takes to distill about 2 gallons of mash and how much dose it yield?

  • @kenny48326 2 gallons of mash is hardly worth the effort. You may get 1/2 quart of shine from it. I would suggest fermenting 10 gallons or more for higher yields or you will get discouraged very quickly.

  • Don't use something like this as a pressure cooker, you'd be asking for trouble....

  • So how did it turn out with the flat lid.... what do you all think about a glass lid that's a small dome and then take the handle of of the top and route the tubing threw the hole

  • This is actualy a great tutorial , im going to try follow the links later and post feedback here about my experience doing this :)

    Thank you !

  • @TheMrAgd Cool. let us know how it goes for you.
