  • How can a teacher teach when she has to deal with the one or two students who are emotionally or mentally disabled? How can she, even one with a helper be expected to teach learning disabled kids side by side with kids of normal intelligence and abilities? They can't. So the classroom just becomes a holding cell. Meanwhile, parents who can find ways to get their kids out. I did. I home schooled after sixth grade because it simply wasn't worth the risk of sending my daughter to public school.

  • Enoch, it's hitting black schools and students harder but regardless of color there has been a change in the schools which cannot be blamed on teachers, even the mediocre teacher. Mainstreaming. Parents and lawyers went to court to fight for mainstreaming in the misguided belief that putting all the kids in the same classroom helps any of them. It doesn't. Some of these kids can't learn, and putting them in normal classes just pulls everyone else down.
