It's a myth that people used to think the world was flat. Many low-tech pieces of empirical evidence from observation demonstrate the Earth's roundness; e.g. the horizon is only ever about 3 miles away due to curvature.
Slow reps build endurance; endurance can be useful.
if the time is like 15 sec that means that u have to lift and raise the weight in around 2 seconds( if reps are 6-8). So u say i shouldn't lower the weight for like 2-3 seconds? And if u lift the weight fast doesn't the tension on the muscles go away after the first half of the rep. ?

Hey was up Steve just wanted to know what you think about Richard sandrak(little hurciles) do you think he's in the best shape ever or not so much and what did you think of him when he was a kid and was ripped?
What about contraction. If I'm training with heavy weights (to isolate the muscle) then I don't want to go "too fast" because I want that contraction - that tight feeling that comes with getting "the pump". I know its hard to describe with just words. But bottom line - if Im using a heavier weight to work the muscle intensely Im going for the "pump" - at a moderate speed. What do you say?
@BrainTrance Thanks! Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. I had great shows 4-13 and 4-14. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. steve is right like usual. The people trying to argue with him make me lol.
If you want to work on form do it on your warm up up set.
If you want to do slow reps thats great too, just dont expect to get much bigger and stronger because you're going into the lactate system which builds slow twitch fibres
@mellowman07 Thanks! Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. I had great shows 4-13 and 4-14. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. I learned that the positive motion is faster than the eccentric motion from that bodybuilding websites. On that website, they take about 2 seconds to do the eccentric part of the movement.
@TheMadStrangler Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. I had great shows 4-13 and 4-14. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. Strict form is important, people think that the you're only working out you're muscle at the concentric phase if the exercise but if you keep a strict form on the eccentric which is about 20% stronger then the concentric phase; you will workout and break down the muscle more then if you would do some jerky motion, I'm just saying...
@BodyPerformanceTV I hope you really didnt answer to me;Okay let me explain why the Speed of the exercise is key to everything;A "Good" Speed makes the exercise safer. Take Biceps Curls for example! If you use strict form You will only Use Biceps but if you swing and do jerky motions that comes with Explosive training if not done correct ( Newcommers should always stick to basics ) you might use erector spine and make a compression of the intervertebra art. and you might strain Art. Cubiti wrong
if you talk to pro bodybuilders, they will tell you that you should lift explosively and use good form. But there is no need to lift slowly and being extremely strict, because it also takes away your focus and you're not gonna be working out as hard. check out any Mr olympia workout or any strongman workout. their for sucks in many cases, but they sure as hell are strong and big
It's hard for me to be explosive with heavier weights. Plus, say I'm benching 220 (I'm 205), if I do explosive reps, even if it's not killing me to do it fast, don't I risk tearing something?
I've just started light training again after a long lay off. When I do bench press really fast I'm not really aching much the next day, when I do the repetitions slowly, the next day the aching is intense.
@4mike8 Faster. Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. I had great shows 4-13 and 4-14. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once they upload. Tell a friend! ~Steve
you should lift explosively but lowering the weight should be much slower, this way the muscle still has to work while lowering and you are not just leaving it up to gravity... which means more gains. no one ever seems to talk about the lowering of the weight, it's one half the exercise.
@gtiger66 You certainly want to have control of the weight and have that mind-muscle connection,..but these personal trainers in gyms have taken this WAY too far. If you are using free weights, naturally the negative will be slower.
Agree with this, but alot of people do it too explosively and sacrifice form--making it abit of a waste. Good form being essential--I hope that hasn't been exposed as a myth without my knowing? :P
well that depends. If somebody is using bad fom but is still stressing and overloading the muscle it will grow. This is why you see a lot of big guys in the gym who are ripped but don't use very good form however they DO use a heavy weight.
When i'm in the gym I don't really focus on proper form, just how much im stressing the muscle
my coach says on the bench press you should lower slowly, pause on the chest and press explosively. doing it this way makes a set take twice as long if not more than just updownupdown for let's say 5 reps
@JaktFibaz YES the lowering on the bench press should be slower. The faster you lower the bar on the bench press, the more momentum is created in that direction,..making it harder to push back up. But that was not the point of the video.
If you train slowly, you're developing aerobic, slow-twitch fiber muscles. You will most never be very strong (1RM strength in any given lift) using this method, but can help endurance athletes (marathon runners, bicyclists, etc.) Being explosive and dynamic on your lifts is paramount to most sports (football, wrestling, baseball, etc.) I never train slowly because i play football, but if you're a runner, go on ahead.
i started doign it slowly, cause i wanted to have my joints stabalized a bit better, i do BJJ so things can be quite anaerobic and in need for muscle endurance.. i train with plyometrics and explosivity once in a while cause its important with grappling too
He didnt say .. the slow isnt going to give u results people... he simply said.. thers a certain amount of fuel in the muscles about 10-15 sec worth.. and the slower u push the more time u waste to get out more reps ...
Burning is simply the creation of lactic acid because you're burning sugar. BUT it doesn't mean you've contracted the muscle effectively or completely. THAT'S what people don't understand. Like getting a pump doesn't mean muscle growth!!!
If you dont care about what steve said and you hand out advice you dont know then get out of this channel,he knows his stuff he learned it if your not here cause your learning i want to follow him then get out you dont belong go make your own youtube channel
I have no patience for so called professional who don't know their trade or craft. Especially if they're going to be handing out advice. I've seen videos by idiots saying changing exercise causes growth or lifting slow is best and these are both incorrect.
Not really. There's schools of thought for slow lifting, and explosive lifting. Both have gotten people results, so saying that some fathers of modern fitness were" uneducated and inexperienced" is very narrow minded.
Good videos though, you're helping a lot of people and that's what counts.
I agree with you 100%, but I do know SOME people that have had success when swtiching from explosive lifting to slow lifting Mike Mentzer style, so I don't know if that theory can be completely thrown out the window just yet. Cheers!
aleterra, I assume you've done that new dvd series named "Chalean" where she says to lift weights slowly to burn fat? well, she claims herself to be a fitness expert..but her knowledge is very limited
No, I've been following scooby1961 videos, and he has a complete opposite opinion, his motto is "nice and slow" :). Now, I am not trying to bash anybody, I try to pick up advice from different gurus.
Lifting weight at any speed DOES NOT BURN FAT. And anybody who says it does it uneducated about weight loss and knows very little about basic aerobics.
see im a girl and i play high school basketball(freshman) and we have to work out monday-thursday untill oct.3...so, im minding my own buisness workin out. and my coach would get kinda angry cuz i would finnish b4 every 1 elce(they are always clowning more than working) sand they told me i need to go super slow cuz im not giving my muscils enouth time to relax!..and thats exactly y they cant keep up w/ me "a little white girl" on the court
love this guy :-) im going into the airforce in 6 months and i wanna be mega fit when i get there so i dont struggle and ive learned more in his videos than i ever did in school biology. hero!
you do realize most strength in the military is based off of muscular endurance and cardio, not high weight, so getting way big by following advice from a professional body builder you will probably lose all the size and strength you gained
LOL yes i am FULLY aware and at what point did i say i wanted to be
"high weight"
"body builder"
or even "big"
this advice is universal for anyone wanting to gain strength. Ill ask u to read what i said and then take time to think about how silly ur answers are. Muscular endurance comes from weight training as well as other explosive training e.g. press-ups etc. So when u use that thing between ur ears u will see that steves vids are very helpfull. And he has plenty of cardio vids too.
I am a medical student and i want to make another contribution to the reasons why you said it is not effective to do the exercise slowly: by doing it, you interrupt completely the blood suply to the muscle by the strong contraction wich interrupts the flow of blood in the arteries completely, wich is not very reasonable and not very friendlyto a muscle wich is already in lack of energy because of the exercise. by doing in normal speed, the muscleis working as a Pump, and the blood goes in. thanx
Have you considered videos that show proper workout form on most popular exercises? Seeing HOW the weight training is properly done would probably be a great help for everyone watching. Yes? No? Maybe? Keep up the great work and thanks again.
I GREATLY appreciate your videos. Very very very informative but what's better is that you are ABSOLUTELY dead on about everything you say. My son and I have changed our workout and nutrition routines according to what you have been teaching and we have had amazing results!! Being diabetic I believe your video instruction has changed my life. I am no longer seeing abnormal blood sugar levels after only weeks of eating better and working out better (weights and cardio). Thank you VERY much!
In my Taekwondo club some women "fear" doing push-ups because they think they would get bulky from doing them. I'm telling them I do more than 400 push-ups and over 200 pull-ups a week, and I'm still far away from getting the adoptive daughter from Arnold Schwarzenegger...man, it's just always funny. ;)
Nothing wrong with that. BUT increasing the weight might be difficult. Try increasing the amount by 20% and doing slow reps. Then take that weight do it with an explosive, aggressive movement an let me know which one is easier to perform.
Sounds like you're doing the right things. You're increasing your strength and your arms are pumped and tired at the end of your workout. Welcome to weight lifting! Keep up the good work! ~Steve
hi I love your vids I just want to ask a quick question hopefully you answer im 6'2" 255 pounds I just started working out 3 weeks ago ive noticed a resistance and growth to my biceps and the soreness started to go away so I moved up 10pounds on my weights and at the end of every workout my arms are tight and have a bloated heavy feeling am I doing good? should I do something different?
i dont really understand the logic in this theory, where does the fuel go if it's not spent? If there is a limited amount of fuel in the muscle wont it just be spent quicker if there is more mouvments per unit of time? One way or the other the same mecanical energy is spent overall. If the mouvment is too quick you might cheat or tear ligaments. If the mouvment is to slow, you dont pump enough blood through the muscle. IMO, you must find the the correct speed and this comes with experience.
is it best to work out a muscle slowly? say im doing bicep curls, I usually go slowly until my bicep gets a burn off of 10 rather then going fast and not really feeling it. I heard from my gym teacher that if you are looking to be toned to go slow.
An INTENSE contract is the impotant part not how long the contraction is. The longer the contraction the more tired the muscle becomes (because of lost fuel) and the less effective the contraction.
hmm, I always work my chest and my abs slower then say I do with my trapz. I feel a better burn with going slower the going fast so should I go semi-fast?
Very good point, i always train slow because i was thinking more of my fibers would be working. When you throw with the weights some parts are doing less because your weight is already moving and so you need less power to push it further. But this effects the training because its making you tired, i know understand why faster is more effective.
If you're working out period, then good for you. But any bodybuilder you see will lift very explosively with shorter reps and they know a thing or two about weight lifting. Ronnie Coleman, one of the heaviest weight lifting bodybuilders, is a prime example of this.
yes but as louie from westside says, you are lifting it fast, but it isnt moving fast. if you were to half the weight half way through the rep, it would shoot up
The motions should be explosive, but not ballistic, and your justification for why isn't exactly what I'd call 'valid', either. It's not about energy reserves, it's about motor unit recruitment and, for strength training specifically, other nervous system adaptations.
Yes, it is, unless you enjoy injuries. It's certainly no reason to slow down when doing heavy sets, but it is a reason to take the time to actually learn how to do the exercises properly.
I hate some women who take over a weight machine for like 10 minutes on the lowest weight doing like 100 reps very slowly. But then again saying that i bet some women hate us men grunting when lifting weights. Well let me tell you the grunting helps that extra 5% to lift more. Hardly anyone I see in the gym does weight lifting too slow. It's usually too fast. Slow and controlled movement is the way to go.
For example, today I saw people cheating on momentum and unable to squeeze at the end of their rows. Those jerks can cause injury.
I had to thumbs this down.

What about contraction. If I'm training with heavy weights (to isolate the muscle) then I don't want to go "too fast" because I want that contraction - that tight feeling that comes with getting "the pump". I know its hard to describe with just words. But bottom line - if Im using a heavier weight to work the muscle intensely Im going for the "pump" - at a moderate speed. What do you say?
apaige22 1 year ago
I lift slowly. I'm always afraid of getting in the habit of using my momentum when lifting instead of my muscles.

If you want to work on form do it on your warm up up set.
If you want to do slow reps thats great too, just dont expect to get much bigger and stronger because you're going into the lactate system which builds slow twitch fibres

@ chaaarge
Strict form is important, people think that the you're only working out you're muscle at the concentric phase if the exercise but if you keep a strict form on the eccentric which is about 20% stronger then the concentric phase; you will workout and break down the muscle more then if you would do some jerky motion, I'm just saying...
Unknownz00 1 year ago
@Unknownz00 That's not true.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@BodyPerformanceTV I hope you really didnt answer to me;Okay let me explain why the Speed of the exercise is key to everything;A "Good" Speed makes the exercise safer. Take Biceps Curls for example! If you use strict form You will only Use Biceps but if you swing and do jerky motions that comes with Explosive training if not done correct ( Newcommers should always stick to basics ) you might use erector spine and make a compression of the intervertebra art. and you might strain Art. Cubiti wrong
Unknownz00 1 year ago
if you talk to pro bodybuilders, they will tell you that you should lift explosively and use good form. But there is no need to lift slowly and being extremely strict, because it also takes away your focus and you're not gonna be working out as hard. check out any Mr olympia workout or any strongman workout. their for sucks in many cases, but they sure as hell are strong and big
Chaaarge 1 year ago
It would be real cool and helpfull if we could see you do a full weeks work out. watching you work in some video would be great. PLEASE AND THANKS.

It's hard for me to be explosive with heavier weights. Plus, say I'm benching 220 (I'm 205), if I do explosive reps, even if it's not killing me to do it fast, don't I risk tearing something?
Anglefan12 1 year ago
I've just started light training again after a long lay off. When I do bench press really fast I'm not really aching much the next day, when I do the repetitions slowly, the next day the aching is intense.

BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
you should lift explosively but lowering the weight should be much slower, this way the muscle still has to work while lowering and you are not just leaving it up to gravity... which means more gains. no one ever seems to talk about the lowering of the weight, it's one half the exercise.
gtiger66 2 years ago 25
@gtiger66 You certainly want to have control of the weight and have that mind-muscle connection,..but these personal trainers in gyms have taken this WAY too far. If you are using free weights, naturally the negative will be slower.
p90x4lifewaswrong22 1 year ago
Agree with this, but alot of people do it too explosively and sacrifice form--making it abit of a waste. Good form being essential--I hope that hasn't been exposed as a myth without my knowing? :P
KingofStarfox 2 years ago 3
well that depends.
Buffpussy1993 2 years ago 2
I've got to agree with you there, I've seen huge guys with hugely bad form.

my coach says on the bench press you should lower slowly, pause on the chest and press explosively. doing it this way makes a set take twice as long if not more than just updownupdown for let's say 5 reps
JaktFibaz 2 years ago 5
@JaktFibaz YES the lowering on the bench press should be slower. The faster you lower the bar on the bench press, the more momentum is created in that direction,..making it harder to push back up. But that was not the point of the video.

no,being sore is a good thing, your putting stress on your muscles therefore building muscles.
hanley25 2 years ago
If you train slowly, you're developing aerobic, slow-twitch fiber muscles. You will most never be very strong (1RM strength in any given lift) using this method, but can help endurance athletes (marathon runners, bicyclists, etc.) Being explosive and dynamic on your lifts is paramount to most sports (football, wrestling, baseball, etc.) I never train slowly because i play football, but if you're a runner, go on ahead.
ilovehell666 2 years ago 3
i started doign it slowly, cause i wanted to have my joints stabalized a bit better, i do BJJ so things can be quite anaerobic and in need for muscle endurance.. i train with plyometrics and explosivity once in a while cause its important with grappling too
niggabartlebee 2 years ago
He didnt say .. the slow isnt going to give u results people... he simply said.. thers a certain amount of fuel in the muscles about 10-15 sec worth.. and the slower u push the more time u waste to get out more reps ...

YES!!!!!! And you can use heavier weight TOO causes better results!!!!!

This lifting weights slow thing is very debatable. I notice more burn in my chest when i do slow push ups, so Id have to disagree with mr turano here
gustsanch101 2 years ago
Burning is simply the creation of lactic acid because you're burning sugar. BUT it doesn't mean you've contracted the muscle effectively or completely. THAT'S what people don't understand. Like getting a pump doesn't mean muscle growth!!!

burns means nothing.

BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
Not really. There's schools of thought for slow lifting, and explosive lifting. Both have gotten people results, so saying that some fathers of modern fitness were" uneducated and inexperienced" is very narrow minded.
Good videos though, you're helping a lot of people and that's what counts.

you do realize most strength in the military is based off of muscular endurance and cardio, not high weight, so getting way big by following advice from a professional body builder you will probably lose all the size and strength you gained
Mrieatschicken 2 years ago
LOL yes i am FULLY aware and at what point did i say i wanted to be
"high weight"
"body builder"
or even "big"
this advice is universal for anyone wanting to gain strength. Ill ask u to read what i said and then take time to think about how silly ur answers are. Muscular endurance comes from weight training as well as other explosive training e.g. press-ups etc. So when u use that thing between ur ears u will see that steves vids are very helpfull. I am a medical student and i want to make another contribution to the reasons why you said it is not effective to do the exercise slowly: by doing it, you interrupt completely the blood suply to the muscle by the strong contraction wich interrupts the flow of blood in the arteries completely, wich is not very reasonable and not very friendlyto a muscle wich is already in lack of energy because of the exercise. by doing in normal speed, the muscleis working as a Pump, and the blood goes in. thanx

Danielxander1 2 years ago
i dont really understand the logic in this theory, where does the fuel go if it's not spent? If there is a limited amount of fuel in the muscle wont it just be spent quicker if there is more mouvments per unit of time? One way or the other the same mecanical energy is spent overall. If the mouvment is too quick you might cheat or tear ligaments. If the mouvment is to slow, you dont pump enough blood through the muscle. IMO, you must find the the correct speed and this comes with experience.
tselegala 2 years ago
The eccentric phase of a lift is responsible for most of the muscle hypertrophy. A slow eccentric phase will produce more muscle hypertrophy.
zztoproadster 3 years ago
is it best to work out a muscle slowly? say im doing bicep curls, I usually go slowly until my bicep gets a burn off of 10 rather then going fast and not really feeling it. I heard from my gym teacher that if you are looking to be toned to go slow.
taylorfuckedkyle 3 years ago
An INTENSE contract is the impotant part not how long the contraction is. The longer the contraction the more tired the muscle becomes (because of lost fuel) and the less effective the contraction.
BodyPerformanceTV 3 years ago
hmm, I always work my chest and my abs slower then say I do with my trapz. I feel a better burn with going slower the going fast so should I go semi-fast?
taylorfuckedkyle 3 years ago
YEs. Burning doesn't necessarily mean or cause muscle growth. Rarely do my muscles burn BUT they do get fatigued.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
But if I make it semi-fast i can't feel the burn. Well, i doubt you are rong so I will start making them faster!!

Jda4160 3 years ago
Very good point, i always train slow because i was thinking more of my fibers would be working. When you throw with the weights some parts are doing less because your weight is already moving and so you need less power to push it further. But this effects the training because its making you tired, i know understand why faster is more effective.
woutvsas 3 years ago
the faster more fibers are working
heidtmanmail 3 years ago

If you're working out period, then good for you. But any bodybuilder you see will lift very explosively with shorter reps and they know a thing or two about weight lifting. Ronnie Coleman, one of the heaviest weight lifting bodybuilders, is a prime example of this.

The motions should be explosive, but not ballistic, and your justification for why isn't exactly what I'd call 'valid', either. It's not about energy reserves, it's about motor unit recruitment and, for strength training specifically, other nervous system adaptations.

you are supposed to lift the weights as hard as you can. your not supposed to go slow at all. good form is important but its nothing to stress over.

Yes, it is, unless you enjoy injuries. It's certainly no reason to slow down when doing heavy sets, but it is a reason to take the time to actually learn how to do the exercises properly.
