I think Fred Rogers' brilliance is perhaps underrated. I wasn't aware that he was among the first to think of television as a tool for education in what was then a new medium.
God bless him! I was 3 years old and Mr. Rogers's neighborhood was NEW back then! I LOVE Mr. Rogers and watched him everyday! He Was an intelligent, sweet, wonderful loving man who was very special. I miss him
Hi whitedwarf29 I absolutely believe you are correct. He was a wonderful human being and I recall how wonderful he was when I was a child. I was never abused, but he was SOOO wonderful nonetheless. He was great every time I saw him when I was a kid. :)
Mike
PS: I wonder if Fred recalled the Three Stooges in this interview?
Fred's life is a complete contradiction to what we think is important. Things like pop culture and the pursuit of money and power. I love him so much!
"It's the little epiphanies of life that matter most, it's those moments when somebody will tell you, 'You know, you really did help me in a way that you could have never known: just by being there, and just by being you.'" ~Fred McFeely Rogers
The best things in life are way off stage....the little epiphanies that matter most....you really did help me in a way you could have never known......
apparently fred had many friends with weird names. lol i guess we don't have to look very far to find out what inspired him to name the characters in the neighborhood of make believe lol. "snooki lawson" haha.
In regards to the 1950's show he saw with people throwing pies, my guess is, he was watching 'Soupy Sales'. Mr Rogers is a legend and he was in his own time too. He is a hero and one of the greatest Americans ever lived. Countless children he helped in so many ways. What a legacy!
Fred Rogers was a truly kind and compassionate man, so rare. Had he been born into another time or culture, he might have been known as a bodhisattva, or saint, or prophet. It is a blessing that he shone forth in our time, and in our culture, when we needed his loving message the most.
"And I saw people throwing pies in each others faces and I thought, this could be a wonderful tool, why are people using it this way?" why indeed Fred
Kudos to the interviewer to letting Mr. Rogers follow his train of thought and talk about his experiences and lessons he learned. Some other interviews in the archives seemed rush, like the interviewer had to go somewhere. These interviews are very rich, very thoughtful. We miss Mr. Rogers.
The Ramones were/are very different people than Fred Rogers but the lesson of treating people with respect and dignity and being generous towards those who admire you rather than suspicious and withholding is an important one. Thanks Mister Rogers! Thanks Ramones
@sonicsnout ....why r u mentioning how the ramones treated people with respect and dignity on a mr. rogers video?.....do they have a connection with mr. rogers,or are u just going on the theme of how they treated people?....just curious since i like both mr rogers and the ramones
He was such a gentle man and kind soul, and that is what made him so very successful. I remember looking forward to his show every day (I was allowed 1 hour a day). It was like visiting with my friend who knew me best. I see the programing that is available to children now, and want to weep...but how do you catch lightening in a bottle for a second time? He was my greatest friend as a child, and I will miss him desperately, and will strive every day to be a bit more like him.
Mr. Rogers is the best example of a true saint, whether you are religious or not. He set an example of how we all should act by always keeping others in mind.
I wasn't very much into Mr. Rogers as a kid. I must admit, I did not really understand the slower pacing of his show nor his message but now I reflect on what I can find on Youtube and I feel just such a wonderful sense of empathy from the man. It really is such a profound thing for someone to say "I like you the way you are."
I always found it ironic that when watching his show he always said "you made this day a special day by just you being you", when in fact it was he that made my day a special day. When I was sad, I watched his show because he made you feel special about yourself when watching. And right now, with the times ahead of us, he seemed to have the perfect program for children to feel safe about the world we live in. We need more shows to be like his.
There are folks today who want to claim that because Rogers told children they were OK as they were, he encouraged them to expect success without work. On the contrary, I think Rogers told children that they had the raw materials to live a good life. I don't know many successful people who didn't start out with some faith in themselves, even when they were facing long odds. Rogers found something positive in everyone, and I think he probably inspired many people to be more.
i personally believe FR, while overlooked most often, is probably one of the greatest americans of all time. many many children over the years looked at him for comfort. Many abused children with no where to look found him a godsend and a refuge and a source of strength in there young lives.. as well as many adults as the documentry tells about
i guess in short what im trying to say is he is an example of the best humanity has to offer
Yeah but his tangents are so interesting and inspiring and the woman giving the interview doesnt seem to realize it. She keeps pushing the interview back to the concrete facts about his life like where he went to high school or what shows he worked on.
I think she does a wonderful job, becuase while those tangents may be interesting and inspiring, she is trying to convey from the researchers prospective, those aspects which people looking at FR's life would be most interested in.
I wish this show was still on tv
