i just finished the book Masters of Doom a couple days ago.. i was absolutely amazed! i had to find videos of john carmack and romero. ive played doom and quake all my life. it's really cool to see that he still has his epic mane!
I saw John Romero working at the local Starbucks down in Denver Colorado recently. He made me a Venti Cafe Americano. Unfortunately it had a foot long grey hair in it.
It was put on hold. Then Romero eventually said it's canceled, thought other team members said that Romero is out of the loop and game is still in the stealth development mode. Well, typical drama around things that John touches. :)
Time magazine Daikatana: "Everything [John Romero] touches turns to gibs and gold."
...everything Romero touches managerial-style in ANY manner turns into a piece of shit, or collapses into oblivion or "why the fuck is this man stuck with cousin It's 80s hair" or "daaamn Romero's cocky for a guy who's been knocked the fuck down a humble peg or three since his overcocky Doom/post-Quake days."
John/Adrian Carmack explain a lot of the history (particularly at id) well, and Romero's fucked behavior
it was cool if romero creat a new game...i dont know why everybody hate daikatana i know for some reason its for (john romero he about to make you his bitch and you suck it down) but it was a cool game we dont care about what he say but if more people buy daikatana in the time i think he do some new game today so think about it
DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THIS MAN SAYS!!! If you have never heard of him, all you need to know is that he spreads horrible lies, hypes games to a level that makes Halo 3 seem obscure, and has an ego the size of North America. For God sakes, he pissed away millions in investment dollars, and almost destroyed an entire game development company. If you ever wondered why game developers are so reluctant to talk too much about their games before release, John Romero is the reason.
Don't know about the intro stuff. But what Romero is listening to is "Sludge Factory" form the awesome Alice in Chains. They are in Doom as well so.. ;)
Anybody who disses John "Deathmatch" Romero isn't a true gamer, so what if his latest games are not the greatest, he's been involved in the greatest (Commander Keen series, Wolfenstein 3D series, DOOM series, Quake)
Seems like it's the cool thing to do lately, just rip on the guy. Just respect him for the past!
Plus he's taken alot of chances even if they have ended up bad in more current times. id didn't after he left. They stayed with the tried and true. I'm not putting id down BTW. Ion Storm? Deus Ex and Anachronox came out of that group. Both great games.
Once you get a mega-block buster you're kind of expected to ride that same success or your looked at skeptically.
My point?
He's done great work. He has an ego. He's made some mistakes. He's still done and doing some great stuff for the industry
I have goofed on Romero a LOT on Youtube, (especially in regards to the Bitch ad which I actually like in a gallows humour sort of way,) but I cannot take away the creations that we got from the man.
Carmack and Romero both had massive egos. One wanted to be king of coding and the other wanted to be king of gamers. Ultimately Carmack hit a wall, (being cutting edge is fleeting, just ask Nintendo and Atari,) and so did John.
Respect and defend his past but his present, not so much.
John Romero was to gaming what the Dogtown boys were to skateboarding. (Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams, Shogo et all.) They kicked EVERYONE else's ass for a few years but ultimately the times past them by and they were beaten at their own game. It doesn't take away their importance but it doesn't give them their relevance in the skate world back either.
What Romero needs to do is what Tony Hawk and Tony Alva are going and that's a gaming equivilant of the 'Old Skool Sk8 Park Tour.' John could assemble the pro gaming and writing legends of the 90's and tour the country in deathmatch weekends with fans and gamers. (Like a gaming answer to the KISS Konventions.) Rock icons like KISS, Pink Floyd and the likes don't record much anymore but they tour playing the classic hits. Why not gamers too?
"Despite the Cyberathlete Professional League ceasing operations on 13 March 2008, Tom Mustaine, the director of Escalation Studios, has said that Escalation Studios will continue to work on Severity, although it is not their main focus at this time."
I know John Romero has it in him to make Severity a crazy success. I mean this is one of the main guys responsible for Doom. And Doom was so awesome, that 14 years later, I'm STILL playing it. But please, for the love of GOD, don't he better not screw this one up. The man's a genius, but oftentimes he can let that fact get to his head.
Stay cool about this John and, who knows, you just might get that Daikatana monkey off your back.
FUCK that I have nothing to be happy about John. I want you to put out something that has the effect on me as DOOM did back in the day. That game changed my life
A simple answer to a simple question. He's basicly saying that Doom was a really fucking awsome game. Doom was awsome, and the Quake series just wasn't the same without John Romero. I think he was the one who suggested a medievil setting for the original Quake.
I think he left because they didn't make it medievil enough. I think Quake might have been better singleplayer if it was made his way. But it was revolutionary multiplayer game as it is. But I would have loved to see the medievil version still.
He is the one that made suggestions for every game out at the time from ID Carmack fired him eventually as no work was getting done. Romero has allot of haters out there but if you ever meet him in person he is a really awesome person.
totally true... You can perfectly see how Romero's and McGee's departures affected ID: goodbye to those incredible ambientations and designs... ID was NOT the same after they left.
Btw, it wasn't John Carmack who fired him...
And if it was for him it would be all technical improvements and engine show-off. Thanks God he has other people around...
I know he messed up with Daikatana but if you try things you sometimes mess up. He still co-created Doom and that is a work of genius so the man has done it and done it well.
