Fastest double bass ever recorded (in a "song" format) is Among The Living, hands down the fastest double bass ever recorded. Saw it played live (1987) it was even faster then the recording (studio album). Sweet. God Damn Charlie Benante used to plat fast as FK! DAMN! =)
Could be, youre right. I forgot about Virgil... ya he has ALOT of technique. Probably, but Ive never heard that tune though... but I DONT doubt it, not at all
It is just that I listened to ALOT of Anthrax growing up (mid 1980s Anthrax) and Charlie Benantes drumming on those two albums was FKN FAST as FK.
Out of all the drummer playing *this style* of drumming, Charlie is the fastest... although Ive seen Brooks Wackerman play with the Vandals several times, and he FN RIPS!
Also, Virgil (that I know of) has never played in a band that puts out albums and tours in support. Meaning he is more of a fusion guy / hired gun / solo or "independent" artist. So most kids (like me when growing up) are / were unaware of Virgil, I listened (back then) to local bands and up and comers
Charlie is and was the fastest dbl bass player and fastest fills - EVERYTHING he played was FAST AND POWERFUL - BOTH
Also listened to Slayer, not as fast or pwrfl DBL BASS.
@icup3o Virgil plays in Planet X. This bands does tour and let people say "uuuhhhh" when Virgil starts 'Dog Boots'...LOL Saw it three times, and he makes me cry...for I'm a drummer too...haha...
Im gonna HAVE TO check out Planet X (already did Youtube) - fkn SWEET. I LOVE ODD METER!
I hear you - but - me also liking old school punk rock, thrash / crossover - those two styles are played more loosely, and an emphasis on aggression - pounding into the drums, a different feel then fusion or prog rock (but alot of similarities as well). Charlie captured that pounding and aggressive drumming - dbl bass FAST and Powerful where other drummers in that vein weaken - out of room
Have also seen transcriptions of Virgil's drumming, 16ths on BD at FAST tempos for extended periods - yes, the fastest Ive ever heard of. He uses dbl strokes at those tempos, pretty FN amazing! (dbl strokes on BD meaning rr ll, not rlrl)
I think at "this style" of drumming / music Charlie is / was the fastest (and most powerful). Some drummers at faster tempos start to weaken (their feel becomes shakey) - not Charlie, he just burns (or burned) through everything. PWRFL & FST
Charlie Benante, Paul Bostaph, Gar Samuelson(R.I.P), John Tempesta, and Nick Menza...what do they all have in common? There some of the best fucking drummers on the planet thats what
@ZeroMurasame they are not- for sure. maybe they have got a name of drummers of good bands but there exist much better drummers. Check out Thomas Lang; he is one of my favourites and much better for sure. Believe me, I know what I am talking about.
I heard a legend about Charlie Benante years ago.
It is said that when Anthrax first formed, he played so hard/fast that at the end of each show, Charlie was left beating a pile of dust where his drum kit once stood! To remedy this, Charlie's drum tech secretly replaced his heads with Kevlar, the cymbals and drum bodies with titanium/carbide, and the sticks with an unknown metal found in a crashed meteor found in Death Valley.
This is just what I've heard at shows, I think it's true. You?
I bet Charlie's bandmates never made the statement "He wasn't the best drummer, but he put a lot of heart into his music". Nobody can do the crazy shit Charlie does on the drums.
Anthrax is by far the most underrated band. Every bit as good as Metallica....they just decided to not sell out. Listen to the albums Persistence of Time, State of Euphoria, or my fave AMONG THE LIVING.....and they are better than the albums Metallica put out around the same time. Anthrax f*ckin' rules!
so is that the infamous kit that laid down some the heaviest stuff of that era? at the end of this clip he starts to play United Forces. kinda cool, you listen to those SOD songs for 20 years, and now you see what kit he had (drum setup, paiste rude cymbals, etc). I would like to see more clips from this session - song like Milk, Freddy Kruger, and my personal fav, Kill Yourself (kill youself, kill yourself, why dont you kill yourself, dont really on no one else, end it all, Kill Yourself, ....)
But he plays really easy stuff but very fast, Charlie plays more complicated but slower so: some like to play fast easy stuff and some like more ambitious stuff, it depends on the music you play
tracking united forces !!! so is this from 1984?

out of all 4 bands anthrax was probably the most unfamous. anthrax is better than megadeth hands down.
and metallica was waaaaay to overrated.
id say
1slayer
2anthax
3megadeth
4metallica
thats what i meant.
thrashingjustin 3 years ago 3
i wouldnt say they are better then megadeth but i would say they are better then metallica.
ExileCanadaMetal 2 years ago 5
my verdict of most famous old school thrash bands gotta be:
Joint 1st Anthrax & Testament
2megadeth
3exodus
4kreator
5slayer
6metallica
Just not that into metallica- boring as fuck live, oh and slayer get fuckin irritating after a while- just my humble opinion!
