@NorthernVictory the formation is only a framework for your teams players and tactics. 4-4-2 could be the best formation for your team, if you have the right players, and the right tactics. this is why teams adopt different formations.
It is only a framework, yet just as people, weapons, and animals, not everything is created equally. The truth is in the current incarnation of football, 4-4-2 is a tactically inflexible system compared to a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1 XMAS, or any formation that uses a triangular or staggered midfield.
Double pivots are superior in defense and still offer greater numerical and possession advantage in the midfield, and a 1-2 works the same way, trading defense for more offense.
The formation is the starting point, the reference point; in this regard you are correct. Hodgson discusses points of references in terms of strikers, which is fine. However, as we see time and time again with teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Milan and the likes - the midfield is what truly wins games these days. The days of traditional wingers and a flat midfield are dead & gone. Hodgson did not understand this - Kenny Dalglish DOES.
Teams with proficient and skilled midfielders DO NOT NEED a secondary striker. In fact, a secondary striker is not preferred because it allows defenders the ability to mark them. Midfielders dropping deep and running from deep creates more havoc and confusion for defenders because they do not have a DEFENSIVE REFERENCE POINT. Look at how Spain plays, for example; Villa is not an out-and-out striker, and they still dominate with possession and attacking midfielders.
currently in charge of brighton & hove albion on football manager 2011, usin 4-4-2...the 2 fullbacks i give them liscence to get forward if they can also play as a wing back...one of my centrebacks is a stopper (strong, physical, breaks up attacks with precision tacklin) while the other is a cover(defends well and covers any errors the other centreback makes)...2 out-and-out wingers with good support from fullbacks overlappin,a DMF, a ballwinner or playmaker, n a target man n a poacher upfront
It's a mystery he didn't make it at Liverpool. The man is clearly a tactical genius. I can imagine Gerrard, Carra, Torres et al had never seen the like of it in team meetings.
The main strengths of a 4-4-2 in my opinion is the wide players

Hodgson clearly has no tactical flexibility.
Attacking? 4-4-2
Defending? 4-4-2
Playing with a team with players that would fit a better system? 4-4-2
Retard still doesn't get why continental winners VERY RARELY use a "flat four" midfield anymore.
And his bias/hatred/aversion for 4-3-3 or a single centre-forward is blatant.
