@MrKingkirby I heard that! The whole reason that I originally bought this CD was for the song Pulp Culture. I was seriously into car audio and that song made my CRX with two 18" woofers rock hard! Eventually I fell in love with the whole album and still love it.
I was bitching about the song "Blinded me with Science" when someone told me Thomas Dolby was actually awesome. He gave me this album, and goddamn. It's incredible. Thomas Dolby is underrated; this album is inspired. "There was one room in the house that was always kept locked......."
when the video ran on MTV they demanded we censor the video so when she is dancing over Thomas for the MTV version we cut to a picture of H.M. The Queen Mother.
at the time that 'ate my buick' appeared; rolling stone was still getting over the death of john denver ( whom they'd declared god) . dolby's command of sound in general; puts him in the rarified air that one would find such artist as zappa, eno,and devo.
Spot on! Very few can appreciate the genius of Dolby's music. When sounds like Dolby's hit the eardrums, the brain recoils as if someone just whispered a 'sweet nothing' into your ear. I mean... it feels that good!
Rarified air is the perfect way to put. I would say rare like a truthful politician or a 85 degree day at the South Pole!
Now....this is what you call music....This is the best Thomas Dolby song I ever heard.......He has collabrated with George Clinton in the past...This song rules!!

Tabasco sauce was invented in 1868 by Edmund McIlhenny, a Maryland-born former banker who had moved to Louisiana around 1840. On his death in 1890, McIlhenny was succeeded by his eldest son, John Avery McIlhenny, who expanded and modernized the business, but resigned after a few years to join Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders volunteer cavalry regiment.
i am at work, my co-worker asked me if i had any hot sauce. i thought about this song for the first tiime in forever and its on youtube being discussed. He's worked with G.Clinton, and Malcolm Mclaren as well as others, i was a teenager when "aliens ate my buick" was released and it was adventurous, fun music...we need more Tom Dolby's now!!
Unfortunately, free musical spirits like his are few and rare thse days...AVIS RARA!And his hottest part is his BRAIN! His music and videos have always been so clever and funny!May the Cube be with Him Always! (Sure It is!)
Well, George Clinton was one of the writers on this song, so that would explain its difference from normal Dolby stuff. However, I love this song, and the whole of the "Aliens Ate My Buick" album. :D
Yeah, I really thought "Aliens Ate My Buick" was sadly overlooked. I love every track on it, but it didn't have the crossover success that "Flat Earth" did with Hyperactive, or "Golden Age..." with She Blinded Me...
The funk horns, spaghetti western guitar twang, it's all so much fun. Remember fun? Before Grunge came and made everything so serious. Now the only fun music is useless pre-fab pop.
Yeah, I know... I'm having lots of fun with stuff like The Flaming Lips, Polyphonic Spree. etc... I find alot of fun in Gavin Friday as well, although it's a darker kind of fun. There's actually a lot of fun music out there, but it just feels like things have changed so drastically since Grunge and the alt-rock explosion of the early 90s.
"aliens ate my buick" was also the first tmdr album to be widely panned by critics (rolling stone only gave it 2 stars after giving his first two albums 4). i guess they were all expecting "golden age III" and completely overlooked the signs of change signaled in "dolby's cube", which came out in '86, as well as his work with joni mitchell a year earlier on "dog eat dog".
thanks for all your help, guys. i've decided it doesn't suck...and you're right, w-fan, it does beat the hell out of most stuff today. i also must mention that i have always been a dolby fan. no record collection should be without "golden age of wireless." genius, and with andy partridge playing harmonica on "europa." it very much doesn't suck.
"does it suck or not?" i believe given a choice between making suck ass music or never recording another song Thomas Dolby would opt for never recording again.
ooh, it's weird that they put the piano bridge on top of the last verse. I don't think I like it.

I'd love a new Tom Dolby too, but....
Thanks to the shitty record conglomerates that we have, we're not getting them. Not in my lifetime or yours.

if i'm not mistaken, this is from the period when he was rolling with p-funk, which would explain the difference in vocalization and the horn tracks.
flownogard 4 years ago
it doesn't suck. it has a mixture of different song styles. it has synth pop, rap(before the shit you hear today), and dance
warriorsfan19 4 years ago
does it suck or not? i kind of can't tell. i know i don't like the horns, but thomas looks good in that white suit.
